Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff might be approaching his first draft in the captain’s chair like a seasoned veteran.

In other words, it’s possible that Dimitroff is lying his ass off.

On Monday, Dimitroff vaguely hinted that the team has received called about the No. 3 overall pick in the draft.

“Right now there’s nothing concrete at all,” Dimitroff said, according to the Associated Press.  “We’ve obviously gotten phone calls.  I don’t want to necessarily mention who they are right now, but there’s definitely been some interest.”

We think Dimitroff doesn’t want to mention the teams because, if he did, the teams that he mentioned would likely promptly issue a press release taking issue with Dimitroff’s assertion.

A move down would be great for the Falcons, and for Dimitroff.  He would get more draft picks.  He wouldn’t have to pay the first-round rookie that he picks according to the dreaded Larry Fitzgerald/Braylon Edwards/Vince Young/Joe Thomas slot.

And Dimitroff would find a way to avoid the subtle yet, in our opinion, very real pressure from ownership to pick quarterback Matt Ryan, in an effort to put a new face on the franchise in the wake of the Mike Vick fiasco without regard to whether he gives them the most on-field bang for the buck.

Unless, of course, Ryan falls to whatever spot the Falcons might acquire by trading down.  But it would make much more football — and business – sense to pick Ryan at a lower spot.
