Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports what we’ve been hearing for weeks — the Cincinnati Bengals will not trade receiver Chad Johnson.
“No matter the offer,” Schefter says. “No matter the circumstances. No deal.”
Last week, Johnson said that he wants to be traded before the draft. Or after it.
He won’t be. Before, during, or after.
The Bengals are proving a point here. Operating under a CBA that no longer permits them to use or enforce the “loyalty clause,” Johnson’s gross display of disloyalty means that the team will stick it to him whenever and wherever it can.
Basically, Ocho Stinko is caught in Quicko Sando. The more he tries to get out of it, the deeper he sinks.

So everyone believes the Bengals when they say Johnson won’t be traded, but no one believes the Lions when they say Williams won’t be traded.
Huh?!

RIGHT…the Bengals would rather ruin the 2008 season before it starts than to trade Chad for a high pick.

Awesome emotional rollercoaster you put us Eagles Fans through today since 3 PM!! I went from thinking McNabb would have a top target like Roy Williams to throw to, to hearing Millen say “No Way” would they trade them - then I shift my focus back on Chad Johnson - only to read yet another article about how there is “NO WAY” the Bungles will trade him… What’s next??

Miami offers all of their picks this year and next as well as Jason Taylor… I would bet $50,000,000,000 the Bungals would take that offer so quickly Johnson would be instantly teleported to Miami.
Realistically, anybody offers a 1st for him, would get him, hell if Philly offered them Shepard and their own 1st rounder the Bungals would be absolute morons to refuse.. oh wait, we are talking the Bungals here.. (my bad)
As for Williams and Detroit, any 1st round pick would be snagged in a heartbeat by them.. they get a current 1st rounder for a guy they will need to pay $12million to keep after March 1st, 2009..

As a Steelers fan, it’s tough to decide if I think the Bungles are worse with him or without him. I think they’d be worse without him. Trade him for a 4th. That’s the Randy Moss precedent.

unless they are overwelmed with an offer then the bengels should stick it to him and take whatever measures they can to make sure he gets no money while he holds out.

We’ll see if they change their tune after the team starts off 1-4 with Palmer, TJ, & Stinko all fighting with each other. At that point, they’ll probably trade him away for a gatorade jug.

I agree with what the Bengals are doing. Chad Johnson has been paid big chunks of his bonus the last 2 years. He has three years left on his contract, but has decided to try and bully the Bengals into trading him. He has disrespected his team, the city, and the fans. If his tactics were to be successful, it would just encourage other players to try the same. Let him sit it out for the next three years. Don’t trade him.

loyalty? where is the bengals loyalty to their best players? this offense has been dragged down by the defense for far too long and Johnson has every right to be upset, and it is insulting that Palmer, Houshmanzadeh and the rest of the offense aren’t as upset.
In Seattle a few years ago, our offense was really good but the defense sucked, so enter a new GM, he rebuilds the defense and BAM! a perennial playoff team.

I’d slap a Philadelphia and TO situation on his whining butt in a heartbeat. Suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team and let him sit with no pay coming in whatsoever. Make TJ Houshsywxiusy the no. 1 wideout and draft the best wideout available in the draft.
As was stated above, to give in to his demands would set a horrible league wide precedent. Time to send this malcontent to the corner for a timeout.

Keeping an unhappy Johnson in Cinci is just plain stupid and the Bengals are a very stupid organization. They’ll keep him and their team will implode again.
As for Moss being traded for a 4th round pick or whatever middle round it was, Moss was coming off an injury and many speculated that he was on the downside. Johnson’s situation is different. He’s still under contract for multiple seasons at a reasonable rate and his game has shown no signs of decline.

I’m not buying into anything the Bengals or Lions say at this point. There is just too much chatter coming from Philly, Dallas and other teams looking for wideouts that Johnson and Williams can be had.
I will be shocked if one of these guys aren’t dealt by the start of the draft.

I think if the trade is there do it. But remember the cap hit the team will take if they trade him. He is under contract therefore he will play. If he doesn’t he will be fined.
It really is a simple situation, and if Chad doesn’t like it he can quit.

Lots of bad ideas all around here. First of all, the “Moss precedent” of a 4th round pick for Moss (see 40-some catches for 600 yards that year) is eclipsed by the Wes Welker 2nd round pick, Steeler fan.
And secondly, 85 is a jackass to start off the year, gets “Keyshawned” for conduct detrimental, and either the Bengals win, or they don’t. I’d hate for the Bengals to “implode” by having a 19th straight season without a playoff win. I’m pretty sure you only implode when you are a contender to begin with.
So, finally, screw Chad.

The Bengals really need to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves,”What is gained by keeping Chad?” He’s a phenom that feels slighted and has an enormous personality. That will translate into locker room friction as we have already seen on the sidelines with his QB, his coaches and other WRs. Great WRs don’t grow on trees, but his trade value could bring in enough guys and picks to get Cincy back in the playoffs. Playing hardball and being “right” may make you feel good today, but being too stubborn may make you forget that you have an opportunity to make the team better by getting good value and subtracting a guy who has pretty much told you a hundred times, “I’m gonna be a cancer to this team if you keep me around.” Swallow your pride Mike Brown and do what’s best for your team OR have $8M tied up in salary cap space for a guy who doesn’t see the field.

I’ll say it again, why is it a team that signs a contract can terminate on will, but a player that signs a contract cannot? If they prorate any money already given in the form of bonuses, or write the contract such that roster bonuses are for the previous year, and a signing bonus is the only bonus you get ahead of any performance, why shouldn’t the player be able to terminate the deal? Whens the last time you were unhappy with a job at Burger King and you wanted to quit but your boss said ‘Sorry kid, you signed a contract. You can’t go work anywhere else, you’re stuck here for the next 4 years?’

Everyone here thinks teams are offering anything worth a trade. Point is most say trade chad a proven reciever for a 1st round unproven pick. Sounds like a fair trade (sarcasm). Can anyone name me a team that is offering a proven player under contract for 4 years for a first round draft choice. How about a draft choice and a player. Name me a team that would want another T.O. besides Dallas who the Bengals play this year. What is gained by not letting the cry baby get his way is to show that a single player is not going to tell the franchise what they are going to do. They have the ability to bench and fine him if he is a distraction once training camp starts. So tell me what do the bengals gain froma trade?

what can the bengals gain? well, addition by subtraction. that team could go 7-9 without chad. yes they would be less talented… but they would also have much fewer distractions.
but, the BK analogy doesnt work. people dont sign 5 year contracts to work at the bk steakhouse. we are talking real money here; he made a commitment also. this guy is imploding all by his lonesome. the team doesnt have to kowtow and make a stupid trade.

The NFLPA doesn’t have the power the MLBPA has. There are virtually no guaranteed contracts in the NFL. This is primarily due to the high percentage of season/career ending injuries. The most recent model for contracts now include a substantial “signing bonus”, thus allowing the player to get 25-40% of the money up front. Also the average length of an NFL player is 4 years (sourced that number from a NFL.com search.
I believe this situation was organized and scripted by Rosenhaus. IF he is able to force the Bengals to trade Johnson, it sends a powerful message to other players about procuring his services to induce more money from their present contract. Nevertheless, trying to extort money from Mike Brown is akin to claiming to control the weather.
