Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson hasn’t played a down in the preseason in the last two years, and he has only 14 carries in the preseason in his entire career.
Considering that history — and considering that he ended the postseason on the bench with a bad knee — it would stand to reason that Tomlinson will probably get all the rest he can before September and again sit out the preseason in 2008.
But Tomlinson says he might want to play in at least one exhibition game.
“We’ll have to see how it goes,” Tomlinson tells Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It may be good for me to play in one preseason game.”
Tomlinson says Chargers running backs coach Ollie Wilson has urged him to consider whether skipping the preseason causes him to get off to slow starts to the regular season. In 2007 Tomlinson averaged fewer than three yards a carry in each of the Chargers’ first three games.
“Maybe that’s a part of not playing in the preseason; maybe it’s not,” Tomlinson said. ”Who knows? Maybe I might get a chance to run a little bit in the preseason.”
Tomlinson said his knee is about 90 percent healed, and that he will be limited at minicamp in May but completely ready for the start of training camp in July. He called his knee, “a lot better than I would have expected at this time.”

I would think LT would want to test out the knee a bit in preseason games before the regular season starts.
The big question is, who is going to take Michael Turner’s spot? Sproles is at best a situational back, so whether the Chargers have Turner’s replacement already under contract, or whether they will need to draft a replacement, only time will tell.
As for LT’s numbers being down a bit, I wasn’t too impressed at all with the way the Charger offensive line played last year, and LT is getting up in years.

I think its a good idea for him. He did have a slow start last year (And it wasn’t just him, Jackson sat out all of preseason and was cold for a while) and it would benefit him to have at least 9 or 10 carries in one or two games. It would help him ignite early and give his knee a few reps before taking the season head-on.

LT started slow last year, but then Norv learned how to use him!

B-West is better than LT? Did someone really make that statement? Westbrook is a fantastic back and any team would be lucky to have him, but there is no way he is the superior running back vs. LT.

I can see where LT is coming from. His team was so close to playing in the Super Bowl. Had he been healthy in that AFC championship who knows, the Chargers may had gone on to defeat the Giants. So I understand how he would want to get all the kinks out before he begins the season!

LT is not overrated and he way better than Westbrook. That being said maybe if he is not healing fast enough he can get with Cooper or Merriodman and get their steriods to get better.

Haha eagle pride. First of all, Brian Westbrook is not better than LT. Secondly, you’re participating in caveman/Emmitt Smith talk.
I bet LT plays a little in the preseason.

so he’s going to spend 3 preseason games not 4 moping around on the sidelines, sitting on the far end of the bench not helping or encouraging his teammates…

Something told me to check out what the comments were on this article.
Happy I did!
“he is overrated ,brian westbrook is better and he play in the preseason” was funny as hell! If only I had not stopped drinking this week!

I don’t think LT is a Charger next season. AJ doesn’t like star player attitudes.. Tomlinson is turning into a grumpy old man, and there’s still a year left in him to get a 1st rounder in trade.
Believe it or not, Chargers take a RB with their high 2nd rounder (trading down their 1st).

LT is one of the greatest, Westbrook has more heart in his pinky finger than LT. LT just has concept of the word team. I think he’s an arrogant crybaby. I get a kick out of the old highlights when the Pats beat em.

The guy is a wuss. He might as well run in the preseason since he doesn’t run in the playoffs.
