Ravens tight end Quinn Sypniewski hurt his knee during the team’s minicamp Friday and was carted off the field with an injury that the team fears will cause him to miss the entire 2008 season.
Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times reports that Sypniewski’s left knee buckled after hauling in a pass and awkwardly bumping into linebacker Antwan Barnes. Don Markus of the Baltimore Sun reports that Sypniewski had caught a pass and was trying to avoid contact with Barnes.
Whether Sypniewski actually made contact with Barnes or was hurt trying to avoid contact with Barnes, the fact is that activities in April are supposed to be non-contact. Common sense tells us that in a non-contact activity, not only should a player not awkwardly bump another player, he also shouldn’t have to make sudden movements that will cause his knee to buckle because he’s attempting to avoid contact.
If the players’ union is doing its job, it will demand to know how a player suffered a potentially season-ending injury in a non-contact activity, although players like Sypniewski often decide that it’s better for their careers to suffer silently.

Hi Florio,
Thanks for keeping this an issue. We are sure it upsets those fans who “love” and “hate” different NFL teams, but as fans who view the sport through an objective lens, we admire the influential forum that you have cultivated.
We are always worried that the NFL is attempting to stifle criticism through “quid-pro-quo” mechanisms and agreements such as bringing ESPN into the Monday Night Football franchise or buying ads on your site. But we see that at some level, you continue to bang the drum on numerous violations of procedural and distributive justice that occur in the NFL. Thanks.
Although most fans don’t care about these issues, the ability that you now have to shine a light on certain unjust behaviors and attitudes of the NFL is probably only rivaled by Sports Illustrated. And some may even argue that as a sole-proprietor of your corporation, you have more leeway and discretion than SI.
We hope you are able to keep it up. The long term goals of a society are sometimes at odds with short-term desires. Although we are strong believers in capitalism, we believe liberty and freedom are cardinal human rights.
Keep on keepin’ on, like a bird that flew.
