Though the party line from the defending Super Bowl champs has been that tight end Jeremy Shockey isn’t available, the rumors of a trade to the New Orleans Saints (with even guys like Jim Ross of WWE advancing the ball) have been rampant.
The New York media generally (with a couple of exceptions) has addressed this potential development only in connection with propagating the “we won’t trade him” vow. But now there’s a report from Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News that makes the possible move seem a lot more likely that many previously realized or believed.
Vacchiano writes that Shockey “has told friends he would welcome a trade” to the Saints, and that Shockey “has been sounding off for more than a month” regarding frustrations with the Giants. The frustrations, Vacchiano says, have been fueled by the rumors of a possible trade to the Saints.
From the team’s perspective, the basic position — “we’re not shopping Shockey” — remains intact. But Vacchiano has uncovered some details that make us think that the Giants are pretending to intend to keep Shockey simply in order to maximize his value via trade.
“Anything can happen in personnel,” G.M. Jerry Reese told the media on Thursday. “But right now, Jeremy Shockey is our starting tight end and we’re looking forward for him to be back on the field for us this fall.”
Sure they are. If by “looking forward” Reese means “dreading the very thought.”
Citing unnamed sources, Vacchiano reports that the Giants have been talking to two teams about a possible deal. The Saints offered a second-rounder last month; we’ve previously heard from a very good source that the Giants wanted a second-round pick and safety Roman Harper.
And perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Vacchiano’s item is his assertion that members of the organization agree with the theory that Shockey’s late-season injury and absence made quarterback Eli Manning, and thus the team, even better. That observation is the verbal equivalent of sticking a stubby thumb in Shockey’s eye, and it’s sure to make him only more vocal and/or demonstrative about wanting out.
For now, Shockey has said nothing publicly. We’ve got a feeling that, very soon, we’ll all be hearing from Shockey, unless he has privately received a guarantee that he will be sent to a new team before the draft.

No way he is worth a 2nd and Roman Harper. Maybe we give them a 2nd and Jason(Toast)David. Wouldn’t mind having the guy but not for what they want in return. If we trade our 2nd round pick I hope it involves Lito from Philly. We obviously need a corner that can start now.

This is unfortunate. I liked watching him dismantle his team in the NFC East.

You can bet the other team involved in trade talks is the Seahawks and the Giants are probably trying to get their first round pick or at a minimum flip flop picks if the guy they like is still there at #25 along with another draft pick later.

Trade that man. Saints could use a solid TE.

I’ve never liked Shockey. If I was Coughlin, I’d have him packing pronto.

I’d give him up for a second round pick, its not like The Boss filled in and helped them win a Super Bowl. Besides, the way Shockey treated the team during and after the playoffs and Super Bowl is just the sign of him having wanted out earlier.

The guys a crybaby and its no surprise the Giants did so well with him and Tiki off the field. I would ship him out and take the 2nd round pick from the Saints. Giants definitely don’t need him harassing Eli for the ball every other snap down the field

As a Giants fan, I would not be sad to see him go. The funny thing is, if you go to the Giants message board the Kool Aide has been distributed and consumed by many.
He is being described as an awesome blocker, and someone who rarely drops passes or commits pointless penalties….
I am fine with getting a 2nd rounder for him, but Jerry knows what he is doing….

As a Giants fan who likes (but doesn’t not love) Shockey, I have to admit that his performance fell short of all of his media acclaim. Yes, he’s an above-average tight end. Yes, he’s made the Pro Bowl. However, that’s not the strongest position and he’s definitely not in the same class as Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, or Jason Whitten. He’s made tough catches and added a bit of moxie to a usually meek Giants offense. However, I’ve watched him drop many balls and potential touch downs over the years. Also, his silly antics on the field (spiking the ball after a routine 1st down or complain to the refs) is something that he should have outgrown by now. I’m hoping the team can get a 2nd and another pick (maybe a 4th?) or 2nd tier player for Shockey. The Saints offense is certainly a good fit for him. If not New Orleans, maybe Seattle.

Shockey is so overrated. This is coming from a Giants fan who has watched his every game. Yeah, okay, Shockey gave the team a spark every 6 games or so. Where did that get them?
He is still being hyped up from his play in the Hall of Fame game as a rookie. He is not bad but he is not as consistent enough to call him good. Plain and simple. Kid can block and can make big plays but he has dropped passes or shot us in the foot some other way year after year.

The Saints do not have 4th rounder this year, nor do they have 2 or 3’s next year due to Vilma’s incentive-laden trade with the Jets.
