In January, Wisconsin cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu suffered a torn ACL, dramatically damaging his draft stock.
And we’re now told as the draft approaches that Ikegwuonu supposedly has informed multiple teams that he’ll sit out the entire 2008 season and re-enter the draft in 2009, if he isn’t picked in one of the first two rounds.
There’s a belief that he’s bluffing, and that he really wouldn’t sit out. For several reasons, such a tactic would make no sense.
First of all, his draft stock likely wouldn’t improve dramatically after a year away from the game — unless he runs a 4.1 in the 40-yard dash at next year’s Scouting Combine.
Second, even if the torn ACL wipes out his rookie season, he’d get a year of credit in the league, and he’d be a year closer to free agency.
Third, if he signs a contract in 2008, he’ll get paid.
Fourth, his rehab will be supervised by a medical and training staff that has as much or more of an interest as the player does in getting him back to full health.
There’s also a chance that Ikegwuonu’s stance will prompt no team to draft him at all. Though unlikely, such a development would make him a free agent immediately. He would therefore not re-enter the draft in 2009, and thus would not be entitled to the high-dollar slotted payment that goes along with being selected in round one or two.
Though he’d also be available to the highest bidder, it’s unclear how much any team would put on the table to sign him off the street once he’s fully and completely healthy.

It seems to me the team can place him on Reserve/Non-Football Injury and not pay him.

In a show of solidarity with Ikegjao23ru%###, I hereby resolve to hold out for the entire year if I am drafted on the second day and re-enter the 2009 draft.

I’m a Badgers fan and I had a hard time believing he was a 1 or 2 before the injury. Good luck, Jack.

decisions, decisions… get drafted much later that originally thought because of major injury but get paid while rehabbing with state of the art equipment, trainers, and medical staff or sit out a year and workout in your garage in hopes of getting drafted much higher the following year.

Sounds like this guy is a big baby. Maybe he was a first or Second round pick but, now after his injury he knows that he won’t get that big money. Now that he won’t get that big money he thinks that he can hold out and get drafted next year to try and get that big money. What an idiot. “Well if Iam not going to in first or second then I am not going to play at all”. What an idiot. He obvisouly need to speak to an agent or his agent is an idiot if he has one.

Rosenhaus is trying a power play?
Ike ought to request a do-over for the whole year.
I doubt he was a a first day guy, he needed to play another year of college ball & prove he could play corner.
A solid ‘08 in college would have gotten him some first day bucks.
Now, I doubt he’ll be drafted.

Yeah, I’m going to burn a first day pick on a guy who won’t play for me this year and then it takes another year before a guy is fully back to what he was so it’s like his third year before I find out whether he was worth a first day pick at all.
