With the New York Jets desperate to trade defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft, before having to pay him a $3 million roster bonus, the Jets have found another potential trade partner.
After failed talks with the Bengals and stalled talks with the Broncos, the Jets could be sending Robertson to the Eagles.
According to Geoff Mosher of the News Journal, Robertson recently visited Philly, and its resident football team.
Working out a trade with the Jets should be a problem — a third-round pick, a fifth-round pick, and a case of beef jerkey should get that part of the deal done. The problem is Robertson’s contract. Less than two months from getting a free and clear release, Robertson has no real incentive to re-do the deal, unless his new team is ready to fork over the cash.

God I hope the Eagles dont do that…they have bigger problems then trading for a first round bust at DT.
Unless the Eagles get him, and trade him and Lito to the Bengals for Chad. then the Bengals would get Robertson like they wanted, a CB to help out their pass D and maybe a draft pick. Then the eagles would get Chad number 1 WR

As long as my team still has enough pieces to draft or trade for a number one receiver and pick up East Carolina’s Chris Jackson, I’d be happy to welcome Robertson to the nest!

Adding Robertson to the Eagles defense would be excellent.
I have absolutely no believe that he is a trade piece of any kind.
He could thrive in this young, and upcoming defense.
This is a guy if they can work out the deal and he is motivated would be excellent for the Eagles.

“Robertson has no real incentive to re-do the deal, unless his new team is ready to fork over the cash”
Fork over what cash?? If there’s so little interest for him now, who’s going to fork over big free agent bucks later? He’s better off negotiating with a team that wants him now than taking a minimum contract after the draft when teams with needs at DT just took a 21 year old tackle being paid on the rookie scale….

I’d have to think Jets fans might be starting to second guess the team’s move to trade two 1st round draft picks to move up to #4 to grab Robertson! If memory serves, the Jets wanted to pre-empt a move by the Patriots who were rumored to be interested in Robertson (typical Belichickian mind games no doubt).
So instead of a a few alternatives they could have had aside from Robertson at #4 (Terence Newman, Terrell Suggs, Kevin Williams, or
Marcus Trufant)or even two quality players at #13 and #22 (such as Ty Warren, Troy Polamalu, Dallas Clark, Larry Johnson or Calvin Pace)they are desperately hoping to trade him in for a 3rd round pick now.
For Belichick’s part he wound up using his two picks on Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork. I think either of them might fetch more than a 3rd round pick now.
Give the Jets credit - they did finally get Calvin Pace - it just took them 5 years and $42 million to do it.
But overall its a good reminder that no rumor or reports, good or bad, on players from NFL sources at this time of the year can be believed… every team’s trying to position themselves as best they can while doing their best to spook rivals into making stupid moves.

The real problem here is Mangini should have checked his ego at the door, hired an experienced 4-3 guy as his d-coordinator, and kept solid defensive contributors like Robertson and Vilma. Vilma is a Pro Bowl-caliber 4-3 middle linebacker; Robertson, while not the force they expected from the fourth overall pick, still averages 35 tackles and 3 sacks per year. It makes a heck of a lot more sense to drop a couple hundred thousand extra on the right coordinator than to trade players for pennies on the dollar.

The possibility of trading Champ Bailey for Chad Johnson has cooled the talks for Robertson.
If the deal goes through, look for the Bronco’s to draft Cromartie at 12.

why would anyone trade anything of value for a load mouth mini TO? Champ Baily for Chad? Umm no. And any talk of Chad coming to philly has to be the stupidest thing i ever heard. Anyone who knows the eagles organization knows they arent going to take on another TO, nor pay chad the money he thinks he deserves. Come on people, think.

mvlonergan, a Cheerleader, says: “The real problem here is Mangini should have checked his ego at the door, hired an experienced 4-3 guy as his d-coordinator, and kept solid defensive contributors like Robertson and Vilma.”
A good point - when guys like Parcells come into a reclamation project they have a choice of adapting to the talent that is there, or allowing their ego to prompt them to fit talented square pegs in round holes.
Parcells has adapted his system to the players at his disposal in the past, since he rather win right away, while adapting his team over time. For MangIdiot it’s one step forward and two steps back.

Gotta love the comments here..
Yeah sure Mangini should have “Checked his ego” threw out his playbook and ran a 4-3 defense against all his beliefs and wishes as a coach all for a DT with Balky knees looking for more Money soon and an ILB who needs whatever defense he is in to flow his way for his stats…
Bellichik laughs at this notion as if EVERY player wouldn’t want the defense to flow his way…
Also - to kep DFLOB you would STILL need a massive DT next to him in the 4-3 for him to be effective - so What the heck is this guy good for???
Good luck whoever gives up much for him…. he’s inconcistent, can’t train as he should and 1 injury away from a new career.

No, it’s not a stupid move.
The side of the ball that Shanny knows is Offense.
Between Cromartie and the emergence of Paymah, the Broncos would lose nothing at db.
Look, Chad Johnson is “not” T.O., we would welcome him. (Nobody wanted T.O. here)
If you have a chance to improve, you do it.

Robertson like Vilma, will thrive in a 4-3. I have no doubt about that whatsoever. My question is why in the world would any team give up draft picks, players or any form of compensation for him when they know that the Jets will have no choice but to release him by June 1st. At that point he will be a free agent and any team would have the right to sign him and to a much more sensible deal. And watch how everyone who is so-called afraid of his medical risks to be all over him then.

The Jets are trying to convince one or two teams that there’s a market for Robertson.
More than likely, unless Robertson agrees to renegotiate with his new team, the Jets will be forced to cut Robertson just before June 1. Robertson will get less money, the Jets will get nothing for him.

I don’t suppose it’s possible that any teams have accidentally let slip to his agent what they’d pay him if he hits the open market, and that’s why no trade can get done.
