The guys at the Minneapolis Star Tribune write that Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen, the team’s franchise player, is at the Minnesota Vikings’ facility on Friday, that his agent is in attendance as well, and that a deal between the two teams is in the works.
“The latest we’re hearing is that an agreement with the Chiefs is close to being in place and this thing could get done quick,” writes Judd Zulgad. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also are reportedly interested in Allen.
The sticking point will then be the compensation for Allen. As we wrote on Thursday night, the prospect of giving huge guaranteed money with no effective device under the CBA for getting it back should cause real concerns for the Vikings, given that Allen has two DUIs, a two-game suspension, and now owns . . . a bar.
And maybe we missed the press release announcing that the Vikings have been sold, because the last time we checked the franchise was owned by a man who insisted on “high standards, high morals and success” from his football players.
Apparently, the “success” part of the equation becomes the focus when the player in question is one of the best defensive ends in the league. Thus, the same thinking that got receiver Cedrick Wilson fired by the Steelers while linebacker James Harrison got a pass for doing essentially the same thing apparently will apply in Minnesota, where Koren Robinson was canned and Jared Allen is now welcomed with open arms.
Maybe the explanation will be that Jared Allen drove his car after getting drunk at a baptism. Twice.

Good for him. Get outta KC. they woln’t be back in the playoffs for quite a few years. Vikings could be in next year, even though I think wild card spots are gonna go to NFC East teams.

Taking the Viking Love Boat out for a spin should be no problem for Allen.

Good for the Broncos. We never could block him. I am praying this deal goes through.

You’ve really got to stop harking this “Allen is a troublemaker” schtick. Anyone who has followed this story over the past 2 years knows that Allen has changed. He might still be immature (and funny), but he isn’t a dummy. He messed up in the past and he knows it. He has down countless interviews where he as called himself a changed man and thanked those DUIs for calling attention to his problems.

Florio seems to think that Cedric Wilson’s civil rights were violated or something.
Because, you know, *selective justice* is the only way to explain the facts at hand, and the CBA requires “an eye for an eye” in all cases no matter what.
As a lawyer, you’re a great comedian.

FlorioPhillyFan: Perhaps the Vikes take the division flat out?
Hopefully the Vikes don’t give too much for him and make his contract more performance based. If he gets suspended, we don’t want to not be able to recoup the money.
JA would make the Vikes a top 5 defense and would make the draft a bit easier.

Good player with definate turd potential. He’s an exclusive rights FA, so he would have to come to terms with KC first……
I don’t know, but the D-line wasn’t the Vikings biggest probelem. I would think that DB or OL would come first.

I love how people (ahem) are making his two DUIs out to be these serious stains on his moral record. Please.
Listen, DUIs are stupid, they are dangerous to people, and should not be tolerated. But to say that it’s in line with Cedrick Wilson’s violent action [towards women], I don’t buy it.
I completely agree with everything that’s been said about the fact that the Vikings need to look at this as a risk in terms of potential suspension/injury. But to suggest that Wilf would be bending his morals to sign a guy, or to suggest that Allen’s not a guy of character solely based on two stupid decisions (or, even more ludicrously, on his childishly named club and jersey number) is a bit of a stretch. He’s young, and he doesn’t have the maturity or mental capacity of a Yale law professor… but he’s no Rae Carruth, either.

I take offense to the thought that trading for Allen goes against Wilf’s statements on character. He has an addiction, and has taken steps to remedy it. He’s been clean and as a result had the best season of his career.
You said the same thing when the Vikings got Fred Evans, and he has been productive and has gotten into no trouble off the field.
You seem to think that getting people of good character is getting people who have never been in trouble…ever. Good luck with that. Seems a bit unrealistic and speaks to a black-and-white thinking.
Those who know that life is 99% inbetween, in the gray, know that no one is perfect and we’ve all got our problems and issues, and you have to know the *man* and make a decision on that. Childress said something like that when they got Fred Evans, and I totally agree. Very mature and reasonable way of looking at it.

I remember listening to the KC vs. MN game on KFAN this past year. All I heard from Paul Allen was, “Jared Allen with a sack, Jared Allen with a fumble, oh and a recovery.”
He single handily destroyed the Vikings last season. Please bring him to MN. With him we are a serious threat in the NFC Central.

Come on guys. Stop acting like the Vikings are applying a double standard. There is a difference between something done by a player on the active roster, and something done by a player more than a year ago, while he was on a different team.
Koren Robinson led the cops on a high speed, drunken chase while he was on the Vikings, and he rightfully got cut.
Allen’s DWIs were 18 months ago, and he has reportedly been clean since. If he reenacts KoRo’s dumbass moments, then he will be but as well.

You’re incorrect, MVP. Allen is a non-exclusive franchise player. He can negotiate with any team.

Good news for KC Fans I think. Heck, look what the last blockbuster trade did for the Vikings. Sent them to the cellar and got the Cowboys 4 rings. Allen will come in, get 4 sacks the first game then be found in his garage with the car running, ala Herschel Walker. . .

Florio, I know you love to speculate over the malpractice of NFL organizations, but I would have to say that it was a pretty well known fact that with the tender offered to washington, wilson was on his way out whether or not he kicked his girlfriends ass. His inappropriate action just sped up the process.

1. Allen is NOT an exclusive rights franchise tagee
2. Is DUI really comparable to Pacman or Ray Lewis? If we can forget Ray Lewis was involved in murder, the fans will forget DUIs (unless they end up like Leonard Little’s)

Vikings are either giving their First and Third this year, or thier First this year and second next year. Not a bad cost when you consider they’d have used the first on someone like Derrick Harvey (who I think will be a very good pro).
The cap-cost will be exponentially higher than a rookie, but there’s no learning curve for the guy to learn the speed/size of the pro-game either.

So picture this D-Line. Allen, the Williams sisters, and then maybe picking up Merling in the second round of the draft (as they will sure have to give up their 1st round draft choice to King Carl). They would put up some fantasy points!

I’m not worried about the character issues- I’m worried about what the vikes might be giving up to get him- in terms of draft picks and cash. The figure for guaranteed money is going to be very large, justified for Allen to some degree, but will still be a lot tied up in one player. Second, the thought of two first rounders is a little daunting. I would propose this year’s first rounder and next year’s second rounder, or vice versa with with a sixth rounder tacked on for this year.
