As the Bengals remain resolute in their refusal to trade receiver Chad Johnson, receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is now getting in on the act, claiming that it would be better for the team to trade him.
“If he’s not traded it’s going to be a problem,” Houshmandzadeh told Bob Holtzman of ESPN.
Um, T.J.? That’s not for you to decide. And, actually, we’ve heard that Bengals players are unfazed by Chad’s ongoing attack of public verbal diarrhea because they have grown accustomed to his constant stream of private verbal diarrhea.
As one league source explained it to us today, the players realize that Johnson is an asshole, and that he’s going to run his mouth, and that when it’s time to play he’s going to play.
Even Houshmandzadeh realizes that Johnson is bluffing about his position that he won’t report for mandatory offseason workouts or training camp.
“I think eventually he’ll show up, but then you have to worry about how much of a distraction he’ll be,” Houshmandzadeh said, per ESPN.
Johnson is already a distraction. He’s been a distraction since the day he entered the league. And, this time around, if he’s a distraction he’ll be suspended four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the team, which would cost him about $700,000, and would also permit the Bengals to recover a big chunk of his bonus proration for the 2008 season.
So it’s still unfolding just like we thought it would, and it’s fun to watch.

As a Bronco fan, it’s nice to see what Brandon Marshall will be doing in 3 or 4 years. Thanks, Chad.

I’d rather have Greg Lewis as one of my recievers than Chad….The Eagles don’t need another headache. I wanted Chad about three months ago.

The question I have is, How big of a distraction will TJ Houshmandzadeh be? Johnsons college and pro teammate. He seems to cry just as much but doesn’t get the same attention. Without CJ’s double teams will TJ even get open now? 50 -60 catches? Poor Carson, he dosen’t need this.

It’s in Houshmanzadeh’s best interest for Johnson to get traded. Then he’ll have all the leverage with Bengals for the new contract he is angling for.

As far as I can tell he’s not “deciding” anything, he’s just expressing his prediction on how things would play out.

Another Cincinnati WR who should just shut up. What do the Bengals do, grow mouthy WR’s in the place where the three new football fields are going to be built? Isn’t Housh angling for a new contract for himself? Between Chad Johnson, Carson Palmer and now Housh sounding off on all of this, I’m starting to wonder if the Bengals run a NFL team or some junior high school gossip club. Haven’t heard from Antonio Chatman yet. Maybe he’s up tomorrow.

Two words all athletes need to learn, “No Comment”.
How hard is it for any athlete to say those two words. Nothing can be gained by any Bengal by opening his pie hole on this issue. It just creates more of a team distraction than there already is.

Whats with the attack on TJ here?
There is nothing wrong with anything that he said. In fact it was one of the most honest responses that an athlete has come up with in long time.
Anyone that has played organized sports above high school level knows how one bad attitude can really bring down a whole team. TJ doesnt want the headaches and I dont blame him, trade the guy and move on. The Bengals can probably get a 1&2 or a package of pick(s) and player.
If anything I would say TJ is being a good teammate here, because I guarantee that other guys dont want this headache either.

Almost exactly 2 years ago today Drew Rosenwhore had just re-negotiated Chad’s new contract with the Bengals. This was his third contract in five years, included 2 that were renegotiated. Rosenwhore said that this contract was “historic” and he praised the Bengals generosity.
My how things change. I really did think that Chad was different. I always defended him when out of town friends said that he was just another T.O. How wrong was I? This guy is just so immature and quite honestly, uneducated and ignorant about how life really works. This all started because his feelings were hurt when he was critisized this year by fans and media. He just isn’t stable enough emotionally to handle critisism. His stats were good again but he dropped many passes, ran some wrong routes, got in Carson’s face, and pouted on the field after he fumbled, etc. etc. Chad is obviously a great reciever but tell me one big game that he showed up for??? Never. He totally disappeared during thier push for the playoffs in 06′.
For the Bengals, and the league, they need to let him rot this year! Let him sit out. Do not trade him. He will be back right before the first game. If he shows up with an attitude, suspend his selfish ass like Philly did to his mentor. I can’t wait to boo him this year!

Being an Eagles fan who has desperately wanted a top WR since T.O. left, it is tempting to think about McNabb throwing to Chad Johnson and Kevin Curtis. Then I think about how similar Chad is to T.O., and I back off. I think that the Eagles will draft an O-Lineman in the first round, and then pick up a receiver like Manningham or Kelly in the 2nd round.

Let me get this straight: TJ, who plays the same position on the same team as Johnson, doesn’t get to decide if there might be a “problem,” but PFT gets to decides whether there’s a “distraction”? Really?

All the legit thugs that team has had problems with, and CHAD JOHNSON is the distraction? The Bengals loved his act when they were winning, didn’t they? Anybody remember him crying at his locker a couple years ago, talking about “I thought we were far beyond just accepting defeat” as his teammates clowned around after a LOSS? We’re talking about the BENGALS, here. This isn’t about money. This is about getting away from the culture of losing that Mike Brown revels in.

Chad is a self inflicted distraction. They could have gone 7-9 without him. He has NO business agitating for a new contract - the team has regressed since the renegotiation.
His ego is in orbit. At halftime of the one MNF game last year, Palmer could be heard saying “Admit it Chad you effed up”.
It was bad when cuz Key (not famous for verbal self control either) tried to reel him in on ESPN. Chad doesnt listen, even to a relation with experience.
His trade value isnt going up… anytime soon. But I can see Cincy eventually suspending him even if he doesnt suspend himself.
Maybe Cincy should just draft a new wideout. Or two.

Well, maybe this is the final word on this. Everyone posting is wrong and right.
85 is a douche.
Up until this year he wasn’t a distraction on the field, yet his lack of route running skills and improved possum skills have made him less than desirable to Cincy fans.
Houshmanzadeh has benefited from 85’s double-team, however- the Bengals haven’t had a really good running game (how many damn first day RB picks will be on their roster this year?) and never have had a pass-catching tight end.
Bottom-line: extra defensive help, and you can always find a burner down the field to stretch some offense.
And sorry. Even to Bengals fans, this is kind of fun toi watch. Take a stand and sit him down. Ask Terry Glenn and Keyshawn Johnson how fun it is, “HOF 20-none”

I have been a bengal fan for over 20 years, and vividly remember superbowl XXIII . We missed it by that much. I have also had to endure the 15 years of “bad luck” (thousands of fellow bengals fans 2). And since the marvin lewis era we have seen a change in the trend. So we have had alot of misfortunate injuries including the loss of 1st rd DE pollack. Numerous off field problems with idiots that feel they are above the law. Basically what im getting at is that, after those really bad yrs. It seemed we were turning the corner. We got slowed down in 06 and 07. We embraced chad because he was fun to watch and yes he pulled off some hella catches. I just think TJ has been the workhorse that does his job, and with any other team he would be a #1 rec. Chad has turned into a loudmouth, disrespectful, over-paid, egotistical, decoy (T.O. Team Oblitorator). Coincidentally, he also has the devil for agent. That greedy punk that talks out of both sides of his mouth, Drew Rosenhaus. Mr. Brown please get rid of this joker, start the chemo. Besides hes peaked out, and with his bad kharma is due 4 a 1 in a million career ending/threatening injury. Dont let this turn into another Dillion situation.

Chad is worse than T.O.
If you cannot see this then I dont know what to say.
I am having trouble seeing the comparisons. T.O. called out his crappy QB who choked and embarassed his team at the most important moment in their lives. At that point T.O. became the best player on the Eagles and Reid couldn’t handle that Donovan got his baby feelings hurt. The player who perfoemed the best suddenly became the enemy of the loser Eagles. Lets face the facts, the Eagles are a loser organization. T.O. knew this so he wanted more money or he wanted to leave. He got what he wanted.
Chad on the othe hand is nowhere near as smart as Owens. Chad came into the league on a losing organization that he had a chance of turning around, and he is now securing his career in the AFL or CFL. Nobody wants him.
The problems with T.O. and Philly were obvious for any unbiased outsider to understand. They made it to the big game the first year TO was on the team. Donovan choked, TO called him out, TO is cut. How much more obvious does the affair between Reid and Donovan need to be before you can understand this?
TO is a better teammate, and better player and a better entertainer than Chad Johnson.
I truly feel so sorry for Carson Palmer. He is a great guy, extremely smart QB, responsible, and was at one point making a solid connection with Chad. Even took up for him on several occasions. Enough is obviously enough though.
Chad has proven nothing in this league except for his ability to choke in the first round of the playoffs and to come up with endzone celebrations that he has done nothing to deserve.
I have 10,000% more respect for TO than Chad.
I know many will disagree but please… you can hate TO, you can hate Chad… but I will gurantee you that ANY TEAM in this leage would love to have TO on their team, and NO TEAM wants Chad Johnson.
Watch… if Chad has balls he will put his money where his mouth is and “retire”. The pressure is on him at this point to do so. He has said everything indicating that he will. But I think money is more important to Chad than football.
He will appear gutless if he doesnt back up his talk.
Whatever happens, it IS fun to watch.
