The Green Bay Packers have announced that quarterback Brett Favre’s jersey number, 4, will be retired during Week One’s Monday nighter against the Minnesota Vikings.
“The season-opening game is always an exciting event, and now we’re very pleased to add the retirement of Brett’s No. 4 to that evening,” said team president Mark Murphy. “It will make for an electric atmosphere at Lambeau Field, as well as a great opportunity for our fans around the country to share in it while watching the game on the national broadcast.
“Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy, and I looked at the entire schedule and felt the first game would be an ideal time to have the event. I spoke with Brett, as did Ted and Mike, about which game to choose. Ultimately, through our communications, we decided the first game would work great.”
The bigger question is whether the frame will come with one of those “break glass in case of emergency” hammers, so that Favre can retrieve the jersey and play, if/when Aaron Rodgers (who couldn’t stay healthy as the backup) goes down.

Hopefully he won’t wear “45″ when/if he does come back. That never works.

Sounds like an effort to firmly shut–not slam– the door on a possible Favre return.

If I were Aaron Rodgers I’d be pissed…finally gets the chance to step out of the shadows…take over the offense and he still has to share the spotlight with a gray haired, washed up QB. What’s next, Tylenol commercials for chronic arthritis?

I predict we see tons of “Break Glass in Case of Emergency” signs and/or t-shirts around Lambeau this year.

It’s only April people. The season is still a looooooong way off. After Rodgers gets hurt in week 2 of the pre-season, I predict Favre will be back in uniform at Lambeau on Monday August 18th !!!

i second robros’ remark. i have felt since the day brett retired that it wasnt so much HIM making the decision as it was TT trying to move on. and ti makes sense. if favre had stayed and played this year, rodgers would have beeen a free agent coming into, what would have been, his first starting season. and that means a new contract for a guy who hasnt shown much of anything. with favre out of the way this year TT can make a much more educated decision on how much if anything to offer rodgers when his contract is up. if the packers do not draft a QB in one of the first two rounds next week it can only mean one of two things. TT is planning on picking up a backup towards the end of training camps/sometime in pre-season, or as florio put it if/when rodgers goes down favre WILL be back…so much drama-i cant stand it.

I’ve always had a suspicion that Thompson only wants to keep his own players. And he would want to shut the door on Favre as professionally possible.

I am so fed up with this ‘Aaron Rodgers can’t stay healthy’ garbage.
He broke his foot vs. New England..a fluke injury that could have happened to anybody. And,he hurt his hamstring after Dallas that he could have played with if he had been the starter.
Thats it.
Wow,guy is a walking disaster.
Favre was always hurt..the difference is he played through it. Had Favre suffered a broken foot he too would have been out.
Aaron has to prove he can play through the bumps and bruises and I think he will. He was never hurt in college was he?
AARON RODGERS IS NOT INJURY PRONE!
Rex Grossman is injury prone but even he has stayed healthy, more or less,of late.
Rodgers isn’t going to be Favre….Aaron will miss a start here or there like most but I don’t think his durability is a good excuse for GB to waste a pick on Flacco.

I hope Johnny Randall will be there. That would be awesome.
