Somewhere, Robert Smith’s mother is wondering how anyone could not like him. Because Smith is the latest target of the venom of former NFL lineman Kyle “Crazy Joe Davola” Turley.
Via our friends at Sports By Brooks, Turley and Smith got into it Wednesday on Dan Le Batard’s radio show, with Turley eventually blowing a gasket after 20 minutes of debate regarding the plight of retired NFL players seeking disability benefits.
“This is a serious issue,” Turley said. “Families are affected, people are becoming homeless, living in shelters. Do you not see a problem with that? Well, f–k you, then.”

Turley once threatened to kill former Rams coach Mike Martz, allegedly. Crazy Joe’s on-field exploits include ripping off an opponents’ helmet and throwing it across the green cement that once adorned the floor of the Superdome.
We suggest that Smith find that helmet and wear it, lest he be unexpectedly kicked in the head.

I heard Smith was bad mouthin Turley to the execs at NBC. He put the kibosh on his deal with the NFL on NBC.

This guy is amazing. I love the fact that he is trying so hard for 20 minutes to be professional and not go psycho and then boom the steroids take over. It’s like the dude has a psycho button that turns on much like the Hulk.
Here is an idea give Turley his own TV talk show. The first 20 minutes are him debating his hated foes, i.e. Mike Martz and Robert Smith, and the last 10 minutes are him wrestling a large carnivorous animal such as a Bear or a Tiger. That’s entertainment.

Turley’s argument is more emotional where Smith’s is logical. When somebody with an emotional argument is stymied with fact they tend to resort to things like Turley did.
I would think Turley is going to have a hard time finding anybody to put him on live anymore.

If Gridiron Greats want to make headway, they should stop sending Kyle Turley out to talk about it. He’s obviously a hot-headed idiot who doesn’t understand the way the world works. Robert Smith is completely correct in telling him to get a job. Playing a game is not working for a living, money just doesn’t fall from the sky in real life. We need more athletes like Robert Smith. He gets it. Definitely gets it.

I listen to LeBatard everyday and he has a knack for bringing in guys that make interviews interesting,and funny. The best part of that interview was when LeBatard gave Robert Smith the floor to respond to Turley and Turley would not shut up. LeBatard lost control of the interview and couldn’t help but chuckle, since he losses control of a lot of his interviews.

Say what you want about Turley, but I’m always entertained when he is on the tube. It seems to me they pitted Conan the Barbarian against Bob Costas in a civil debate. What the hell did they think was going to happen? Obviously Robert Smith and LeBatard knew, and I agree with horosh that Gridiron Greats should really re-hash that spokesman roster.
That being said, Turley really should have his own show. I’ve got 10,000 friggin’ channels and no Kyle Turley, what gives?

All the Turley bashing. He’s a man any one of you would want in your huddle. He tore that helmet off because the dirty Jets SOB was twisting his QB’s ankle, trying to injure him in the bottom of the scrum. I think it was a fair trade. As far as roid use allegations, I have personally met him on several occasions and believe that his rage doesn’t come from chemicals. Turley wasn’t always the long-haired bad boy we now know him as. Something awful happened in his private life at one point in his career and that’s the point at which I saw the change. I’m not going to report his business because I’ve got too much respect for him, but believe me, any one of you would have a tough time keeping your temper in check, too, if it happened to you. All this has nothing to do with the debate between him and Robert Smith. Just hate to read ignorant speculation without fact.

I’ve always loved both Turley and Smith. Turley for his passion and willingness to jump in someone’s face. Smith for his intelligent and logical points.
As for this issue, I side with Smith. How can someone with a brain make the NFL MINIMUM wage, and be homeless 3, 4, 5-10 years later? Laziness.

I agree with The Jimmy that when people are debating a topic where they do not have facts to back up their point, they generally turn to emotion and name calling or insults. Turley makes an argument that if a player suffers any injury which prevents them from playing in the NFL, then they should get disability. By that “logic,” when a player tears an ACL and is unable to rehab to the point that they can play again, they should receive disability for the rest of their lives because the injury stopped them from being able to play. That is ludicrous. Every example that Turley uses to support his argument is of extreme cases of hardship. And, obviously, the players with extreme cases should be taken care of. But he then uses those extreme cases to make an argument for EVERY case. He needs to realize that, like Smith said, these cases need to be debated on a case-by-case basis. There is no way to make this a coverage-for-all issue.

I listened to that whole audio clip. Kyle Turley might not be as good at Robert Smith at debate … but the way the NFL treats retired players is despicable, and something needs to be done.
People’s lives are altered forever, in a negative way. Painful injuries last big time. Look at Earl Campbell. The man can barely move and is in constant pain.
Robert Smith may be smarter. But Kyle Turley is right.

Smith is on capo gino’s payroll. he threw a lot of “facts” at Turley, but it is stuff the union JUST STARTED due to criticism from GG etc.
Note that most of the former players criticizing the union dont share one particular characteristic with the capo and his supporters. Gino has circled the wagons, folks.
Capo gino and his stooge Smith are the ones backpedaling and trying to act smooth.
It’s an act.
