The Kansas City Chiefs have issued a statement regarding media reports of a potential trade of defensive end Jared Allen to either the Minnesota Vikings or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“We will confirm that we have been in conversation with a few teams regarding the possibility of acquiring Jared Allen’s contractual rights,” team president and G.M. Carl Peterson said. “Any potential agreement would be contingent on the Chiefs receiving appropriate compensation and Jared’s representative reaching a contract agreement.
“Jared is not an exclusive franchise player. Therefore, based on the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, he has the right to visit and negotiate with other teams. However, for any trade to be completed, the Chiefs would need to reach an agreement on compensation. At this point, all of these discussions are preliminary.”
Whether the discussion move beyond “preliminary” is something that needs to happen pretty damn soon. We’re assuming that the Chiefs would like to convert Allen’s right into one or more draft picks that can be used nine days from now.

He is as good as gone. This means that the coaching staff doesnt believe that this team will be good for atleast another 2 years. Tough times to be a chiefs fan, but with the 5th and probably 17th pick in the draft you should be able to find yourselves a couple of really good players.

Allen isn’t going anywhere. If Trent Green hadn’t gotten his brain rattled again, the Chiefs would have a 4th round pick in this year’s draft because Peterson refused to give in on a trade for a washed up QB in his late 30’s. What’s he going to demand in return for Allen? A pound of flesh and someone’s first born son?

I’d be shocked if Peterson got anything more than a 1&3 for Allen. He’s an outstanding player, but if that off-the-field stuff resurfaces, he’s looking at a lengthy suspension. With that risk (plus the contract that Allen wants), Peterson isn’t going to be able to turn the screw too tightly on his trade partner. Allen doesn’t want to be there, might as well get something for him now, rather than let him become a distraction next season and possibly lose him for nothing in next year’s free agent market.

He would look good in purple. Draft picks are a crapshoot. Trading a draft pick for a top player is a no-brainer.

good riddance. i appreciate the sacks he gave us but on the whole, we can improve with more picks. assuming king carl and court jester herm let a 10 year old kid do our draft as opposed to them.

I’d love to see the picks trade their first round pick and hopefully a second day pick for Allen. The Bucs need to improve their pass rush and they could still pick up a receiver like Manningham or Caldwell in the second round. I just hope they could find a decent CB in the later rounds.

He is a serious talent. If he can stay off the booze, he would be a great pickup for any team.

As a fan of KC we hate to see the loss of Jared Allen, but to be honest Jared has been a royal pain in the ASS to the Chiefs. His contract demands are something that will not fit in the Chiefs future of rebuilding a team. Jared is not the sharpest tool in the shed and why invest in someone who could be gone in one mistake. After what teams have witnessed with the Michael Vick contract and the failure to get money back for non preformance, I do not blame the Chiefs. After all we have a running Back who got his deal and then lost his edge. Carl does not want to go through this again. Trade him while there is value and let Larry go for picks too! Let Herm build his team the way Tony D built the Bucs and Colts.

Tony Dungy didn’t build his teams by trading a top 5 pass rusher and top 3 running back….those are the guys you build around.

Imagine the damage that Allen and the Williams boys could do on the field and the damage that Allen and Mckinnie could do. off the field…
Can you say Win/Win situation….

I wonder if the Chiefs would take McKinnie in a trade straight up? They need help on O-Line.

There won’t be a poison pill in the contract. The reason they are negotiating with the Chiefs is no one wants to give up 2 1st rd picks. They want to negotiate something like a 1st + a day 2 pick.

Sorry to disappoint you Norcross, the poison pill doesn’t really apply to this one. JA has the franchise tag on him, that automatically requires two first round picks unless the Chiefs decide to take less.

Tony knows when to let trouble go, Edrin James, along with a host of other players along the years. No one player is worth the cost of your future with the exception to Payton Manning. Good coaches know how to get the best out of players. Herm knows that they stole the four wins the Chiefs got in 07. We need to rebuild an offense and bolster a aged CB crew. To do this requires the draft and getting lucky by June cuts. Carl is the king of getting the fill in guy prior to Training camp. His bargain shopping just has not started yet! They will do everything to get picks to rebuild. But at the same time this team has too many wholes to fill this year.

man… tough times for chiefs fans. we went through this contract stuff with larry last year. i really hope jared is bluffing with all the talk of leaving kc since he was franchised. i think he is bluffing and would love to stay in kc if we were willing to give him a freeney deal, which i dont think we are. too bad.. he is a fan favorite for sure. there will be a lot of pissed off chiefs fans if these thing goes through. its tough to replace a 25 year old sack champion pro bowler.

I think that Jared is visiting both the vikings and tampa is the room they have in cap space… Most of the other suiters could not afford his services.. I also think the vikings would be willing to part with their first round pick and a third if they could get allen.. Two firsts might be excessive..Many people in Minnesota are still stinging nearly 20 years after the Hershel Walker Trade…I have no doubt that with Allen the vikings would have one of the most intimidating front in the NFL.. And also remember that the chiefs and vikings have fairly good off the field realtions.. even doing some training camp scrimmages together… P.S I know my spelling is aweful and my grammer is worse.

Nice political spin by the Chiefs here. “We really don’t want to see him go, but he’s within his Franchise tender rights to visit other teams…” Why can’t he just be honest and say they want to trade him, but no one will pony up 2x 1sts because of Allen’s substance abuse history?

GFH- he’s not a franchise player. He was given the highest restricted free agent tender so he’s worth a 1st and 3rd if anyone signs him away. In a trade there is room for negotiation.
If the vikes part with their 1st rounder they are taking too big a risk. If they offer a 2nd and one of their third rounders- I’m cool with that. The vikes need their first rounder for a possible shot at an OT.

What do you think Cheifs fans. New Englands #7 pick for Jarred Allen?
Heck you might as well give Dallas L. Johnson for their two first rounders. Get McFadden at 5. Adress your d line and O-line with the other first rounders, maybe even find the real QB of the future with Ryan at 7 or later in the first round Brohm or in the second with Falco. I mean if you want to rebuild make it quick. It would be an expensive way to do it, but if you draft well it could pay off quick while they are all under there rookie contract. Of course if you miss on the 4 picks then you get to see the last of “King Carl” and his “Jester” Herm (Thanks Davo). It’s a win win.

The Chiefs need to be careful here. Sure, you can trade Allen and get a couple of draft picks, but what will they be used on? Probably O-linemen. Assuming the Chiefs use their 1st round pick on Matt Ryan, it would appear that the Chiefs are slowy moving back to the state they were in from 2001-2004 in which they had an awesome offense and a piss poor defense. They need to address a few issues on offense, but they can’t destroy their defense in the process.
