During the offseason, Jay Glazer of FOXSports has roughly the same profile as Punxsutawney Phil.
But when Glazer emerges from hibernation, he comes with something more than a hairy ass and tail.
Glazer reports that the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to trade defensive end Jared Allen before the draft. The two suitors are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Minnesota Vikings.
Allen, who bears the franchise tag, tells Glazer that he’ll visit with the Vikings this weekend in Minnesota, and that he plans to meet with the Bucs next week.
“It’s a situation that works out best for both sides,” Allen told Glazer. “I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now. The Chiefs can get valuable draft picks to rebuild with.”
The deal will be driven by two things — compensation to the Chiefs, and a new deal for Allen. As to the former, the Chiefs surely will want at least a first-round pick. They probably will want even more, such as a third-rounder. Minnesota holds the No. 17 overall pick in round one, and Tampa has the No. 20 selection.
As to the latter, Allen might want the same six-year, $72 million package paid last year to Dwight Freeney by the Colts. The deal included $30 million in guaranteed money.
The Vikings know what Allen can do. He returned from a two-game suspension to face Minnesota in Week Three of the 2007 season, and Allen arguably was the reason the Chiefs won the game.
Speaking of suspensions, that’s the one issue that could hold down the trade package and/or the contract. Allen has had two DUI arrests in less than a year, and even though he has been clean the risk of a relapse will always be present.
The only potential glitch here is that G.M. Carl Peterson is known to drive a hard bargain. But the ceiling on the demands is two first-round draft picks, since any team could snag Allen, if they’re willing to ship two first-rounders to K.C.

God must really love the raiders. KC sucks and now they are going to dump the best player on their team. Chalk up 2 division wins for the Raiders next year!

any news about the one player on the chiefs defense that worries me when they play the chargers is good news, especially when he might end up joining a new team

We are in DESPERATE need of a pass rushing DE, if there is any chance that we can land him, it’s worth it. It would be nice if they would settle for a 2nd and 3rd, but if we have to give up a 1st and 3rd, it’s still worth it because he’s probably going to do more to fill our needs than anyone we can get with the 17th pick.

No one drinks in Minnesota, especially in the winter. Really…
I’d trade #17 for Allen no problem. I’d be more interested in Julius Peppers, though. Maybe even Jason Taylor for a 2nd or 3rd…

Multiple DUI’s? While we’re at it, why don’t we bring back Tommy Kramer as the backup quarterback?

I’m fine with Allen going to Minnesota.
My problem is them losing more than just a 1st rounder.

If Allen was concerned about a championship he wouldn’t go to Minnesota or Tampa Bay- Minnesota’s not a favorite to even win their division, and Tampa lost at home in the first round of the playoffs last year, and have a disgruntled starting quarterback who’s getting pretty old.

Allen out of KC?! this is by far the best off season in Oakland in years…questions is, don’t the boys down in Tampa like to booze it up? Sounds like there may be a kegger or two coming…

Not a bad move by the Chiefs, if it happens. They are 2-3 years away from respectibility, more so to even reach the postseason, and rebuilding with draft picks is the way that Herm wants to go. He’s obviously a great player, but he’s too close to that fine line to gamble a long-term, guaranteed money contract on. By the time KC gets turned around, Allen was probably going to be looking at another huge money contract, anyway. Move him now, get the picks, move on.
And if anything does go down, expect Glazer to have it first - he and Allen work out together in Arizona.

Wilf and Co., please get this done. Just get an intern to be his full time driver to prevent further DUIs. he has a lot more tread on the tires then Jason Taylor even though it’ll probably require a first round pick and one of our third round picks to get it done. Peppers would be nice but it’s tough to imagine the Panthers getting rid of him. this fills a HUGE hole on our defense.

Anyone know what the numbers are for cap space for the two teams? I think Tampa has a lot more to offer in terms of money and being the ideal living arrangements, but imagine Allen next to the two Williams and then imagine Rodgers lining up under center in his first game against them. He might need a change of underwear.

Sure sounds to me like the Chiefs are expecting Jake Long to be off the board when they pick at #5 and are going to go with a DE, intstead.

I’m a KC guy and of course it’s going to be more than a first rounder. I’d suspect to see another player involved though. We definitely need draft picks but we also need some players. So Minny, if you have any good second string lineman I’d suspect one of them will be packaged up as well.

Childress said there would be a draft day suprise, who knew the suprise would be that we have no picks on the first day!! Could be a good move I guess, Allen is a baller.

Carl Peterson really knows how to keep fans. At this rate, the stadium might be empty for most games next year. Trade the best player and fan favorite, then suck for 2 more years, at least, after angering fans and losing attendance.
GM test passed. Idiot.

Vikes definately would be improved along the front line if they swing this deal, though I would hope they don’t give up too much since they will be paying him a bunch of coin. Having the commish suspend a star player you overpay for is not good for the moral. Especially if you are looking for a new stadium deal.

Other than $$$ and selling high, why would the Chiefs trade arguably their best player who has 4 years in the league?

Interesting way to use the 17th pick, if the Vikes could get him for just that. Proven production is always better than un-proven rookie, who may or may not be able to produce at the next level. I say “Do It”.
How old is Jared Allen?
