Wow just imaging that secondary. (Brown, Samuel's and Sheppard) Two Pro-Bowlers and one that should have been a pro-bowl corner, all playing in the same secondary. Somebody Pinch me now!

*Pinch*

Oh...Just woke up. No way this is ever going to work with Lito in Midnight Green. The only way it would ever work is if Lito was granted a new contract. Which the Birds won't do because they already have so much money tie-up in that position.

Lito screw Lito. He dont deserve Samuel money because he is not Samuel. Hey Lito heres a WILD idea, how about you make it through one season not injured, K there self proclaimed superstar. When he plays hes good, but thats when he does. Move on, go somewhere else. Not alot of interest because the other 31 teams think the same about you. And memo to Sheldon, dont you start running your mouth because you are not as good as Lito. He has to be dealt, its obvious Joe is not showing his hand.

I'm really hoping they can trade him over draft weekend for a first rounder in 09. Kansas City sounds good... Ty Law is gone and KC is gonna get an early pick...Atlanta sounds good too...just lost DeAngelo Hall...very early pick... just some wishful thinking

I expect Lito to be traded, but would not be surprised to see him back. Sheppard and Brown are both due only around $2 mil a piece this year, so its not like paying all three guys would kill their cap. Plus, as AKFootball pointed out, they can always be creative in how they rotate the three of them, especially with so many teams using three, four and five wide receiver packages. Finally, keep in mind that playing another year in Philly could make sense for Sheppard, as well. He has been injured A LOT the past two or three years. If he can stay healthy and show he is back to his Pro Bowl caliber, that could net him a bigger contract next year than he would get this year.

Personally, I hope he stays. It is true that a Great pass rush makes your secondary look better, Samuel and Sheppard should give the pass rushers another moment to get to the QB...

I must've missed something, because Lito Sheppard is a really good player at a crucial position. The Eagles need to find a way to make him happy. As a Cowboys fan, it sickens me to think about Samuel and Sheppard gunning the corners, it look almost as good on paper as Denver's Bly and Bailey. Such a shame that money and egos play such huge roles these days, but there you have it. Now that i think about it, I hope Lito pulls a TO and ruins another season in Philly...

An Eagles defensive backfield with both Asante and a healthy Lito would be awesome. Of course, the big wild cards are Lito's health and his attitude. But these could be addressed with some creative restructuring.

Why not work out a new deal with Lito that is heavily incentive-laden. If he stays on the field and stays productive, he gets more $$$. If he doesn't he makes the same (or less than) what he gets now.

If Lito performs the Eagles pay him closer to market rate, but they know they have gotten their money's worth. Similarly, if Lito stays injured he doesn't get the money.

They could structure it as a multi-year deal (through the remainder of Lito's existing contract), but with an understanding that if things aren't working out after next season they'll trade him then. Lito will be more tradeable with this kind of contract than his existing deal. Any team looking to trade for Lito knows they are going to have to offer him more upside. The problem is that with his recent injuries, that's a risky proposition. An incentive-laden deal eliminates this risk.

This strikes me as a win-win approach. I'd love to see Lito in Eagles Green next year.

yahmpy,

Why is a second rounder this year crappy? This is widely regarded as one of the best second round drafts in maybe the entire history of the draft. It has been thought that teams see aggresively trying to move down into the second round.

One of two things will happen. Sheppard will be used to move up in the draft to get the tackle Reid wants or he will be used after the draft (June 1st) to get a reciever (Chad Johnson).

Maybe i'm not a great football mind.....but why can't the Eagles keep him? How many teams have two high caliber corners? If the only thing they can get is a 2nd and a fifth (a la The Hall trade) then I don't think it's worth it. Depth at corner is a good thinkg

Pastabelly-

Not entirely true. Injuries the past couple years have forced them to look beyond Lito- they love the kid, it's just his inability to stay on the field which made our front office jump on another top tier cornerback. I agree that he'll be gone though- too much friction there- but Lito is handling this like the class act that he is.

Steelers will take him for a 2nd this year, or maybe the Eagles want to trade up into the first round again to get another player and give us Lito and a 4th this year. Who wouldnt take Lito for a second?

Right on, "AFK". Why trade Lito? He and the Birds are best served keeping him this year. Given his history of injuries, unless Lito plays well this year, every game, he won't get the big contract (save for from the Raiders), and the Eagles won't get anything higher than a second rounder. So, keep him this year. He gets the chance to play for a better contract, Eagles get four Pro Bowlers in the secondary this year and will get a higher draft pick in a trade next year, and everyone is helping to make a Super Bowl run.

Or we can trade him for a second rounder this year and take an overrated Big Ten WR who the Eagles will over-hype even though it's obvious to everyone in the world that the guy can't get separation from a second grade girl (or block her) and has crap-covered bricks for hands. Or maybe Reid just needs to put him in a better position to make plays.

Why to people always want players to switch positions? No one knows how Brown would transition to the safety position. The Eagles are trying to be a playoff contender and unknowns are not what they need right now. If they were a young team with no hope for the playoffs, then you can take a risk a try wacky things. Do the right thing for the team and draft a safety and keep Brown in his natural position.

Why did they need to pay Samuel $10M per year when they already had Sheppard? The only answer is that they're not crazy about Sheppard. He's gone. It will be this year or next.

I don't understand why the Eagles would take a 1st for 2009 or the equivilant value 2nd for 2008. My thoughts are such that most college players take a couple of years to develop and that having a 2nd round pick on your team learning is better than having a 1st the next year.

I like Lito. I'd like to see him back, but if we can get more for him in a trade than we'd get out of him in the season - well you gotta make the trade. There are a variety of holes on our team and this is an area with a lot of depth. We have Pre-Draft Trades, Draft Trades, then Preseason Injury Trades still around.

Lots of teams don't get what they want in FA, Lot's willing to trade on/around draft day, and there are always season ending (or season jeopardizing) injuries…

No one involved has a salary problem or an attitude problem. Eagles are weak at safety and Sheldon Brown is a tough hitter. The way JJ makes defensive packages, I see no reason why they can't play Sheppard opposite Samuel and rotate Brown through safety and nickel. But... trades are more fun.

Andy loves his draft picks. He will take a third and a fifth and draft 2 offensive tackles. Can't wait.

I think the Eagles might get something like a Patriots 2009 first-round pick (the way the Pats strength of schedule is this year, they'll probably go 16-0 again anyway...). It sounds like the best the Eagles are getting now is a low second-round offer, and they want a first this year, which they won't get.

If I'm Andy Reid, I'd rather have a first-rounder next year than a crappy second-rounder this year.

Never say never...money can change a lot of things. In any case, we'll see soon; but I feel that if he's not traded by on on the first day of the draft, he stays with the Eagles. This year, at least.
