The Kansas City Chiefs have the fifth overall pick in the draft. To get ready for it, they’re looking at some of the guys who are likely to be there when the Chiefs select.
According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, players visiting the Chiefs include Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, Boise State offensive tackle Ryan Clady, and Virginia offensive lineman Branden Albert. Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston is expected to visit later in the week.
The primary area of need seems to be on the offensive line, which has disintegrated over the past few years.

Whoa, remember what happened to this Chiefs team.
At one time it was: And now it’s more like:
LT Willie Roaf LT Damion McIntosh
LG Brian Waters LG Brian Waters
C Casey Weigman C Rudy Niswanger
RG Will Shields RG Adrian Jones
RT John Tait RT Anthony Alabi
QB Trent Green QB Brodie Croyle
RB Preist Holmes RB Larry Johnson
FB Tony Richardson FB Oliver Hoyte
WR Johnnie Morton WR Dwayne Bowe
WR Eddie Kennison WR Jeff Webb
TE Tony Gonzalez TE Tony Gonzalez
Good grief, what the heck happened? Of course, this team with like the worst offensive line in football has maybe the best guard in football in Brian Waters, or at least top 5. LJ, Gonzalez, and Bowe are great to, but man, that team used to be a beast! Oh Hoyte was ok, but then he hurt his neck and finished on the IR last year. Good luck KC, you’re going to have a rough year I would guess.

The Chiefs would be crazy to pass on Clady. He is a natural and they need help up front. Actually, such a pure tallent should go earlier, but maybe I am just a biased BSU fan. Seriously, though, he is a rare talent that will be a pro-bowl player for many years to come.

Ryan Clady is exactly what Brody Croyle and Larry Johnson need. A pick of anyone else, except maybe Branden Albert, would just be a waste.

I feel like the Kansas City Chiefs are one of those teams that can turn things around quickly. Not saying the team will. But it can.

Look at the Chiefs’ last few drafts before Herm got there — when Dick Vermeil wasn’t busy trading their picks away for veterans with only 3-4 years left, he was drafting the team right into the toilet. It’s only because Carl Peterson overruled him that they even got Larry Johnson, and Vermeil pouted about it for years.
They’re rebuilding now — they should just take whoever the best player is at #5. They could obviously pass on McFadden, but this idea that they should reach on Clady or somebody is just plain nutty.

Can they un-select Herm Edwards?

From one of best O-lines ever to one of the worst…
They should just use every pick they have on a O-line guy.

What happened was Herman “Franchise Killer” Edwards. Vermeil had the number 1 offense, Herm killed it. He also has a knack of getting his QBs hurt. Coincidence? I don’t think so anymore.

As good as the Chiefs offense was a few years ago, they still haven’t won a playoff game since Joe Montana was at the helm (1993). Now that’s the team I miss - Montana, Marcus Allen, Derrick Thomas.
Yes, the o-line is in shambles, but does anyone really believe that Croyle can be the franchise qb? If only the Chiefs followed their trend of 49ers quarterbacks, they’d have Jeff Garcia right now and would be in much better shape.

The team has more holes than just offensive line. They need to take best player available at #5, not reach for a second tier Olineman. I think the only reason they are looking at guys like Clady and Albert is to cover all their bases should they get an offer to trade town. According to Peter King, there’s a good possibility that NE may want to move to #5 just so they can pick ahead of the hated Jets. If they remain at #5, it’s gonna be who is left of Jake Long, Dorsey, Ryan.

The Chiefs, like every other team, need to build a list of guys they want and then take them when they have the opportunity to take them. How can you really be “reaching” in the first round if you take a guy who you think can be a starter for 8-10 years? When you consider a good 50% of guys taken in the first round end up as busts anyway, I don’t think you can be too concerned about “reaching” or not. If you think you can trade down and still get your guy? Do it. Can’t find a dance partner? Take your guy. It’s just that simple.

Didn’t Clady get a 13 on the Wonderlick!? Red Flag, KC fans, Red Flag. If they’re lucky, they’ll be able to trade down a few picks and snag either Chris Williams or Jeff Otah. I’ve seen some great highlights of Clady, but taking him at #5 would be REALLY stupid, IMO. Poor Brodie Croyle needs all the help he can get before he ends up like Trent Green, but reaching that far for Clady is a real boneheaded move…

I’d say that’s a decent strategy, except for the first round. Drafting need in the first round is why 50% of those guys end up being busts. You take best available in round one, and worry about need in later rounds. Chiefs needed Oline badly last year as well, but instead of reaching for a OT, they took the best player on the board that filled a hole in Bowe. I’d say that worked out pretty well for them.
