Oh yeah, while he may not be the long term answer, Kyle Orton has not regressed as the above article would indicate. He has shown steady improvement, particularly with his touch and accuracy, but that's still where he needs to continue to develope.

But a strange thing happens when "Napoleon Dynamite" is the starter. No matter how unlikely it may seem the Bears just, um, well, win! And do so far more than they lose. Even last year. And regardless of the why's and wherefore's, I know one thing for sure. I'll take an ugly win over a pretty lose any day of the week.

And twice on Sunday.

krisj51 is dead on, but what everyone seems to either be forgetting or ignoring is Offensive Guard. Our Guards sucked so bad last year, backup Tackle John St Clair moved inside during the last quarter of the season...and was a significant improvement! So does this mean he's found a "new home", or was he just a stopgap?

Both the running game and passing game will see significant improvements if our O-line sees significant improvements. Don't expect a RB to be taken until well into Day 2, as Angelo has always given his picks many chances to turn it around. And with 1st & 3rd round picks having been devoted to current RB's Benson & Wolfe respectively, it's more likely he'll wait to evaluate them once they've run behind an improved O-line.

Now he actually has to go out and improve the O-line. Tackle AND Guard.

Any chance you see the Bears trading up in the draft for Brandon Albert ???

Could Limas Sweed be the guy?

What about the holes at DT, with Harris not being signed long term and Dvoracek/Harris having injury problems, it would make sense for our second 3rd round pick to go towards a DT who can contribute and provide long term depth.

I have the Bears selecting the following players...

1. Chris Williams, looks fat and plays too high for my liking, but unless they are able to trade down, he has the highest value of tackles on the board. He could step in at Left Guard for a year while he learns the ropes as well... I personally would like to package the 14 and Ricky Manning Jr. for Atlanta's #34, 37 and 102. This will allow the Bears to pick up a QB at the top of round 2 (Henne / Flacco / Brohm) a wide receiver (Hardy, Doucet, Caldwell) and an offensive lineman (Chilo Rachal, Carl Nicks...or Cherillous / Baker at the top of round 2).

2. Chad Henne, he has played in cold weather and been effective and shown that he can throw the deep ball and play through pain.

3a.Donnie Avery, he is a Berrian clone who should work in as a nice #2 or #3 WR...Lavelle Hawkins, Earl Bennett and Jordy Nelson would also be fine by me.

3b. Dre Moore DT Maryland, Moore is a thickly built foul tempered defensive tackle who will fit in perfectly with the cover 2 d-line. Harris isn't signed long term yet, so this is insurance...and this also works as a quality rotation guy to help rid us of Anthony Adams.

4. Geoff Schwartz T Oregon, He is a BIG right tackle prospect who has the strength and ability to contribute early in his career at RT...Getting Williams and Schwartz as bookends of the future would be a success out of this draft class

5. Tom Zbikowski...The team has lost special teams players for the past 3 seasons and Adrian Peterson will likely be gone before '09. Zbi provides a special teams mentality as well as depth at the strong safety position where he will be asked to fill in for the run more often than play the deep safety...In a weak safety class, he fits the bill as well as anyone else who may be available at this point.

6. Steve Johnson WR Kentucky...Johnson has good size and was productive for Kentucky...As much as the bears have studied Andre Woodson at QB, I'm sure they've noticed how well he played.

7a. Darrell Strong TE Auburn...Blocking TE who will fit the 3rd TE position

7b. Mike Cox FB Georgia Tech...McKie didn't get it done last year and Cox is a smash mouth FB who requires a minimal investment at this point in the draft...also a capable special teamer

7c. Selwyn Lymon WR Purdue, bad character guy who was kicked off the team, but has rare size and speed. The light switch may never go on for this guy, but it would be nice if it happened in Chicago. James Banks of Carson Newman fits the same profile, Banks is a 24 year old prospect who was a starting QB at Tennessee as a true freshman and a leading wide receiver as a sophomore...than had problems with the hippie lettuce and bounced around the lower levels of the NCAA

7d. Chad Simpson RB Morgan State... The guy transferred twice while in the NCAA to find more playing time and is a big bodied slashing RB who ran 4.4 at the combine and has shown nice hands... Would like to pick up a RB in the draft earlier, but realistically the Bears have too many needs to fill in hopes of finding a second day back who has the size, speed, blocking skills to compete as a feature back. I would much rather take a chance on a guy who knows he is a long shot and will work his tail off in camp to beat out Benson...It is also unlikely to see another RB taken after Wolfe was taken in round 3 last year...Unless, they plan on carrying 4 rb's on the roster or cutting last year's 3rd round pick, Benson...turd, or special teams contributor and fine #2 back in Peterson.

It's unfair to call Mark Bradley a journeyman. He got injured and was beaten out by Bernard Berrian. He has great pass-catching skills and route-running skills. Hopefully he comes out of his shell.

As for our first round pick.

In my opinion, taking a RB in the first round is something you do if either:
1. The player is an elite, game-changing talent (like Adrian Peterson, perhaps McFadden)
2. You have everything you need except a RB, including an effective offensive line.

The reason is the league has taught us that you can put mid to late round picks (or even undrafteds) behind a solid line and offense and have success. However, putting a good RB behind a line full of late-round picks is not going to work.

The Bears have to be a RB's worst nightmare--no offensive line AND no passing game. I don't see how the Bears could pass on taking a OT with their pick, even if it means passing on best-player available. This isn't ideal. but it's necesary given Angelo's failure to address the O-line for the last several drafts and in this year's free agency period.

Personally, I think the Bears should be on the horn with Buffalo in the event Clady is there at 11. Buffalo could get whatever receiver they want at 14, and the Bears could sneak in front of Carolina and Denver who would potentially take the Boise State talent. It would probably only cost them their "extra" 3rd rounder or a 4th, but it would net the Bears a tackle who could potentially excel, rather than someone with question marks, like Otah (too slow), Williams (too weak), or Albert (too short/weak).

Mendehall is a great player who would be a dissapointing pick. It's not that I think he won't excell at the next level, its more that I don't think he'll excell in chicago. Our O-Line is so bad and so old that it will be nearly impossible for them to compete on the offensive side of the ball. Last season it was like watching flood gates open every time we snapped the ball. RB's hit in the backfield all the time, no time to throw, combined with a lack of talent at the skill positions provides no hope for this offense. I honestly think that if they don't O-line in the first and second rounds (and probably 3rd as well) it will be a huge error that will be very evident throughout this year and the forseable future.

I feel bad for Bears fan. They might as well just go "best available" offensive player for every pick since they have so many holes. Mendenhall first?

Awful high on Kerry Brown. Seems more of a 5th/6th rounder instead of the 3rd/4th rounder that is implied.

Safety is an area where we will probably add someone. Certainly, there are bodies there, but there is no certainty, and for this defense, quality safety play is key. That said, more of a day 2 look.
