There you go. Gotta love Peterson and Taylor. Nothin wrong with Jones-Drew and Taylor, though.

As far as I'm concerned it isn't neccessary for a RB to carry the ball 25 times a game for 16 games...I believe that the only players to have done so were Jammal Anderson of the Falcons, and Larry Johnson of the Chiefs..both of whom had injury problems the next season. LT himself - the god of wonders and the best back in the NFL according to all media outlets - didn't even average 20 carries per game last season. He had decent backup by the name of Michael Turner, which kept him healthly and effective. The days of a 400 carry rusher are more than likely over.

I believe the fact that Parker has carried the ball 15G-225-1202-4.7, 16G-337-1494-4.4, and 15G-321-1326-41 the past 3 years shows that he can handle the lead role. Drafting a RB in the first round this year would be a mistake. Parker however, could use a decent backup to spell him now and again, and I think that could easily be found in rounds 3-4. I don't belive that Pittsburg needs another Jerome Bettis (with his 3.9 YPC AVG) clubbing his way throught the middle.

Brian 21 have you not heard of Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor?

Willie doesnt get enough credit. He had 2 great seasons and breaks his leg late in the year, so now he is crap? That is bull! Willie needs to be the primary guy, we also signed Mewelde Moore as a third down back. If we draft a RB it should be in the 3rd,4th or 5th rounds. We need OL help NOW, starters and depth, we need to cut Mahan, he only works in a cut-blocking scheme. We need some youth on the DL. We need a safety, maybe Kenny Phillips 1st round, Sam Baker 2nd round, Dre Moore (DT)3rd round, Chevis Jackson(CB) 4th round, Ernie Wheelwright(WR) 5th round, Kenny Iwebema (DE)6th round and Jerome Felton (FB)in the 7th round.

I wouldnt be so sure that this would be a smart move. And to be honest, I am growing sick of this Parker 1 yard here, 1 yard there, 2 here, 50 there, and again 1 here and etc..... We need that back that would give us a constant 4-5 yard average. Will we find him in this draft? Yeah, I do belive so. but I think its going to be in the later rounds. The truth of the matter is that the Steelers have done their best drafting is rounds 3-7. Matt Forte from Tulane is a really nice sized back. Cory Boyd from South Carolina is also a nice sized back that we can get late rounds. I think having the 23rd pick, you can afford to trade up, or even stay at 23. At that point, you have to pick the best athlete avaialable, whether that be a RB. OL or guard. safety, ot whatever. Your first round pick has to be the best avaialable. If it is Stewart, then I'm fine with that, as long as he dont get #10.

Running back is so not a need right now compared to OL, DL, DB, WR. Whenever we have to sign Willie again I'm sure it will be a fairly hefty contract. While I agree we need a big back to compliment Parker, we don't need to do it in the first round! Why no mention of the fact that Chris Johnson visited as well?

The only way we draft Stewart is if Clady, Williams, Otah, Cherilus, Albert, and Groves are all off the board and we can't trade down.

I actually disagree with Florio on this one. How was Fast Willie Parker proven that he can't handle the load? The past two years he's done pretty well with a large number of carries. I agree with everyone else in that the Steelers should focus on their offensive line. 47 sacks was way too much.

Hahahaha, Willie Parker doesnt deserve to be put in the same sentence as Marion Barber. Barber is a bruising inside runner. He isnt a speed back by an stretch. Parker cant play 16 games running up the middle, he is exactly what he was assessed as, a speed back. I'd take Barber any day of the week over Parker. The Steelers should avoid Stewart, he is another Shaun Alexander. I spoke of Parker some what harshly, only when comparing him to Barber, but I would take him over Stewart anyday. The Steelers need to wait until RD 3 and grab Owen Schmidt from WVU

I'm skeptical of Jonathan Stewart. Something tells me he won't be that great of a runner at the NFL level. We'll have to see, and hopefully he proves me wrong.

Another important point is that the Pittsburgh Steelers are in great shape with the running backs they have. Willie Parker is stellar, and even if he can't necessarily take the full load, the dual-back system is what is becoming prominent anyway (best exemplified by Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor). (Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson (the 2nd best one) gonna be the best of '08? haha)

But the Steelers have bigger needs than the running back position with a round one pick.

I think they ought to draft an O-Line or D-Line personally because there running game was fine last year. However, whoever ends up with J-Stewart is going to have a great runningback. Of the top backs in this draft I think he's one of the more likely to succeed

Jeremiah W

I think you're missing my point. I would love to still have Faneca, but my point is that I think with a Center that calls the plays better the whole group that we have now will be better as a whole, despite missing Faneca. I think Chris K will be ok, and Hartwig an upgrade over Mahan. I also see many people calling for 2 or more Oline picks in this draft. I can see 1, but where does 2 fit? We'd have to cut somebody and I don't know who that is since they tendered both Chris K and Essex.

As far as the tackles, we have 3 average tackles in Smith, Starks, and Colon. Smith is a solid LT, could we use spectacular tackles, especially on the left solid? Without a doubt, but so could 15 other franchises.

With all that said, I really think that if Kentwaan Balmer is on the board and Albert is not, that Balmer will be the pick. He really fits the mold of 3-4 DE, at least physically. And it was painfully obvious how much we need another DE when Aaon Smith went down. Thats my sleeper pick for the Steelers, I could be way off.

Stewart is a stud and IMO would be a good pick for the steelers, he fits their style. If they take him in the first the draft is deep enough to pull an O-LINE prospect that could step in a play early like Chilo Rachal from USC.

The Steelers have a secret weapon ready to be unleashed in Gary Russell. He just needs the reps. I saw Russell paired with Maroney in school, and Russell's at least as good -- seriously. Plus he's compact not small, and built to take 20 carries a game. The Steelers need Albert, Groves or some other first round stud, but not RB.

I would be absolutely stunned to see the Steelers use a first rounder to draft any running back. They have serious needs at offensive and defensive line that need to be addressed. IMO, all this talk about drafting the "best available athlete" is a smoke screen.

Not only would the Steelers easily be able to get a big, bruising back to complement Parker in a later round, but they clearly have much more pressing needs to address in the first round. I just don't see how they could take Stewart.

That is crazy talk Pat. Faneca is a beast. He can run block Gregg or Nagta and has the agility to pull and pick up Suggs or Scott on the edge as well. I know you have a big guy behind him, we had his brother here in harm City, but there is no way that him plus a journeyman C is an upgrade at O line with no Al Faneca on it. What about the T position?

This draft is too deep with running backs for the Steelers to need to spend a first round pick on one when they already have Willie Parker. The NFL has gotten to the point where more and more teams are using two backs to stay healthy through the year, but I would be surprised if the Steelers used a first round pick to find a complementary back.

They can get McFadden and they will still get Nagta when they play the Ravens. Letting Fanneca walk is going to hurt. The Steelers have always done the smart thing and taken the best O lineman in the first round and picked up a back later. That makes even more sense in today's finacial climate.

Peterson and Bush were great until they got hurt, then you have half your offense and a huge chunk of money on the bench.
Jones Drew, Addai, and other real good young backs can be had at the bottom of the first or early second round, but there is not a single position in the NFL easier to find a good player off the street.

Priest Holmes went undrafted.

I wonder how big Ben feels about these plans. He publically calls for a big wide receiver earlier in the offseason and they possibly take a big running back instead. This sends the message that we're not even throwing the ball as much was have the last 2 years so don't worry about a big receiver!

Please don't. Please. Come on Steelers, don't do this to me. It hurt when you drafted a Buckeye, but at least it was only Santonio Holmes. Don't take JStew from me too.

A running back with a toe injury? These guys, especially the heavy ones, don't tend to recover well from those sorts of injuries. I agree we should draft a running back, but I'd wait until the 2nd round. I'd love to see the team draft on the O-line and cut Sean Mahan. Addressing those 47 sacks should be the priority.

I'm not sure if the steelers will go with Stewart or not, I don't think his personality would fit and I'm not sure whether or not I'd love the pick. But I think you're off a little with the assesment of Parker and their O-Line. Parker definitely could use some relief, but he's still an above average running back that gives you more than a speed. Is he LT? No, of course not. He might not even be Marion Barber honestly, but he's not just a scat back.

Their O-Line is similar. It is certaintly not spectular, but regardless they did have the NFL's leading rusher through 14 weeks. Also, it is easy to blame one guy and almost all of them could get some, but Mahan was awful and I think what a lot of people don't see with him is that besides being overpowered way too often, he was terrible at making adjustments and the blocking assignments. Thats why you would see guys coming in completely untouched or confusion on the O-line. Hartwig may be comparable physically, but if he can get the mental aspect down quick, their whole Offensive Line will be greatly improved in '08, even without Faneca.

all i've heard the analysts say is that he's 235, but he runs soft and runs like he's 200. i believe we already have a back thats 255 lbs that runs like hes 200 lbs in dookie davenport. plus these toe injuries can be nasty, it helped end mean joes career. i'll pass.
