With the mediocre 40-yard dash generated by Oklahoma Malcolm Kelly and the ill-advised decision to blame the school for his performance, the receiver whom many thought had the best shot at being picked in round one is now likely to fall out of the first round.
And with Kelly’s stock dropping, some league insiders believe that there now could be no receiver picked in round one this year.
Other pass-catchers who are sliding include Limas Sweed of Texas and Early Doucet of LSU.
The last time round one expired without a receiver being drafted was in 1990. That year, Alexander Wright, Reggie “The Human Bobblehead” Rembert, and Mike Bellamy were all second-round selections.
Two years ago, Santonio Holmes was the only receiver selected in the first round, at No. 25.

I think there’s enough teams hurting for a receiver that someone will be taken in round one, whether they’re projected to go round 1 or not.
Bills, Ravens, Eagles, Bears, maybe the Titans? Someone will take a receiver, if they have to trade back into the bottom of round 1 to do so. Don’t count out the Chargers deeming a receiver BPA when they are on the clock.

Maybe Devin Thomas out of Mich State? but that’s probably it.

The Chargers will NOT take a wide receiver in the first. You can bank on it. They need depth at other positions like OT, CB, safety, NT and RB. WR is the least of their worries.

The Bills and Ravens are to high to spend that much money on only a decent receiver, especially since they need other needs. But maybe Limas Sweed to the Titans? He played with Vince Young with Texas and Tennessee needs a receiver.
Plus the the draft is pretty deep with decent receivers, so teams don’t need to risk using a high pick on one when guys like Lavelle Hawkins, Jordy Nelson, Dexter Jackson, Andre Caldwell, and Early Doucet will still be available in the second even third or fourth rounds, and really they’re just a step down from your top guys.
PS Ernie Wheelwright is going to be the Marques Colston of this years draft…you watch.

Personally, I think only DeShaun Jackson (CAL) will be taken in the first round and may be Limas Sweed but there’s a lot of underrated WR in later rounds that I’m sure teams are aware of.
Will Franklin
Marcus Monk
Lavelle Hawkins
Donnie Avery
Adarius Bowman

I’m thinking DeSean Jackson and Devin Thomas will end up being first round picks, especially with Buffalo showing so much interest in Thomas. There are also enough teams needing receivers (TB, TEN, WAS to name three) to get a second WR in, whether it’s Jackson or Sweed, or even Hardy of IU.

You can never count out the Lions on taking a WR in the first round.

I think Kelly will run on a personal visit and have a better showing. That will land him back in round 1… and probably the first WR taken.

i think limas sweed has the most potential at the receiver position in this draft, bu t malcom kelly realy screwed himself. you ran a bad time on a football field instead of a good time on green cement. man up and deal with it.

40 yard dashes are always overblown. Calm down, people. I believe Malcolm Kelly is still a first rounder. Teams with receiver needs near the mid-to-latter part of round 1 won’t pass this Oklahoma receiver up.

There are few WR’s worth a #1.
But this draft is deep at WR?
I don’t quite get that one.

I’d be shocked if Indy didn’t take a WR with their first pick. They cannot bank on Marvin returning to top form and were wise not to throw “dumb money” at the weak free agent WRs available. The only one I could’ve seen them pursuing was Jerry Porter and he got snatched up early by a familiar divisional foe.

How in the heck did this story get double digit responses without an Eagles fan totally freaking out. As a reasonable Eagles fan (oximoron?), I will just say that Devin Thomas at #19 would look pretty good to me.

What, no Eagles fans crowing about the need for a play-making WR?….. Not that Big Red needs any convincing, but hopefully this quiets some Birds fans. Philly’s got much bigger problems than WR (OL, S, DL)….. they can get a few later and find one that turns into Marques Colston by the preseason.
Just for fun, think about how screwed they are if Kevin Curtis goes down vs how screwed they are if John Runyan goes down.

I think there will be a couple WR’s taken late in the first round, but there will be a run on them in the middle of the second.

The teams picking 18-24 and 29 all could use WRs, not including others who are probably too early to justify a WR pick. I think the Eagles finally get it right(?) at WR (Thomas); Big Ben gets his big WR (Kelly); Dallas spends one of their #1s to replace Glenn and stretch the field to free up their playmakers (Jackson); and TEN finally gets Uncle Rico some help (Sweed).

Receivers are the biggest hit and miss proposition in any draft. Unless there’s a sure thing, you can get a decent one in a later round. How many GMs are really as stupid as Matt Millen?

Osgood, Chambers and Jackson isn’t a bad trio, but they hardly make the position San Diego’s LEAST worry. They’re in position to draft the best player, and should that happen to be a receiver I wouldn’t be surprised. Other depth needs be damned, getting Rivers some help can only improve that team.
40 Yard dashes are overblown? Tell that to Dwayne Jarrett. Surefire first round pick, rivaled to be the next best thing after Calvin Johnson. Instead he was the 8th one off the board. And he’s not even living up to THAT lowered expectation.
