Bryant Gumbel, who served as the play-by-play announcer for the first two years of NFL Network’s in-house coverage of regular-season games, is leaving the position.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me,” Gumbel said in a release. “But we’ve agreed that we’d all be better served going in different directions. There are a lot of talented people at NFL Network. I thank them, I wish them well, and I have no doubt that they will be very successful going forward.”
“We appreciate everything Bryant did in helping us launch our NFL Network game telecasts,” said NFL Network President and CEO Steve Bornstein. “Bryant helped create interest in our first foray into televising NFL regular-season games. He is one of the great broadcasters of our time and we are honored to have worked with him.”
One of the ways that Gumbel helped “create interest” was to tee off on NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw. In August 2006, Gumbel gave the following advice to then-incoming NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Gumbel’s HBO program, Real Sports.
“Before he cleans out his office,” Gumbel said, “have Paul Tagliabue show you where he keeps Gene Upshaw’s leash. By making the docile head of the players union his personal pet, your predecessor has kept the peace without giving players the kind of guarantees other pros take for granted. Try to make sure no one competent ever replaces Upshaw on your watch.”
Now that Gumbel has one less job, maybe he’s the guy to replace Upshaw.
And now that Gumbel is gone, maybe they’ll find someone to replace him with a slightly deeper voice.

Well, I’m surprised at Gumbel’s comments. Prior to reading this, I didn’t think that he had ever said anything worth hearing…

He will not be missed. What a worthless waste he was.
He almost single-handedly ruined the telecasts on NFLN for me.

He was right about Upshaw. He is Big Paulies puppet. The interest of the game should have been his secondary concern. The interest of the players is all he gets paid to represent.
Gumble was the worst football announcer on TV by a landslide though.

Oh thank god! He was the worst announcer in football. He put you to sleep and had no idea what was happening. I guess he finally lost the pictures he had of someone.

As much crap as Ive said about Gumbel, those comments about Upshaw showed true balls and I gotta a little more (not much more) respect for the guy now.

The question is why?
No, not why did he leave, but I never figured out what he was doing there in the first place. His ex-Today co-host Jane Pauley would have been better to listen to.

I thought this when I initially heard of the NFLN: “What a great concept, football all the time. I would love to watch information on other teams that I normally couldn’t see. I wish I had the NFLN.”
Then I was introduced to Gumbel. He single handedly pushed me away from the NFLN. Who wants this guy (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7792606446647744479&q=bryant+gumbel&total=69&start=0&num=100&so=0&type=search&plindex=1) talking about their team?

Thank Belichick. I hated him as an announcer and at least 5-10 times a game he’d screw something up that made me want to march down to the NFLN office and punch something!

The problem with his comment about Upshaw is that he is misguided. If the CBA in place was so bad, how come the owners want to cancel it and renegotiate? The players salaries have increased, their rights have increased, the popularity of league as a whole has increased. The players shold be extended his contract and thanking him for doing a great job. Gumble is an attention hound. He only said it to get attention for himself.

Bryant Gumbel announces a football game like he is reading you a bedtime story.
He’s generally pretty good on his “Real Sports” show. They produce some really interesting stories, but he just flat out sucked at calling a game. Forget the politics of the NFL. He needed to go because he simply wasn’t good at his job.

OMFG THANK GOD!!!!!!
Now I won’t have to hear him say “Team X will turn it over on downs” everytime they punt.
Seriously, Gumbel might’ve been good for covering figure skating at the Olympics or table tennis or badminton but leave football to someone who suits commentating a man’s game.

2 excrutiating seasons of listening to this guy made me want to pull all of my damn hair out!! Thank you Jesus, Alah, and Ghandi!!!gumble certainly made nfln telecasts VERY hard to listen to. Maybe the rest of the networks will follow this example and get rid of these other idiots who think it’s their place to add their own “twist” to calling an NFL game. Am I saying that the play by play and analyst guys need to be boring, hell no, but serious consideration should be put into who will have these duties.

I’m glad to hear that Gumbel is finally out at NFLN, but I hold no personal animus against him. On the other hand however, I don’t get the network because I have Time Warner cable as my provider. With each passing day I find myself inching towards DirecTV.
I find Gumbel’s remarks to Goodell interesting. I was not aware of them until I read this post.
