Bryant Gumbel, who served as the play-by-play announcer for the first two years of NFL Network’s in-house coverage of regular-season games, is leaving the position.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me,” Gumbel said in a release. “But we’ve agreed that we’d all be better served going in different directions. There are a lot of talented people at NFL Network. I thank them, I wish them well, and I have no doubt that they will be very successful going forward.”
“We appreciate everything Bryant did in helping us launch our NFL Network game telecasts,” said NFL Network President and CEO Steve Bornstein. “Bryant helped create interest in our first foray into televising NFL regular-season games. He is one of the great broadcasters of our time and we are honored to have worked with him.”
One of the ways that Gumbel helped “create interest” was to tee off on NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw. In August 2006, Gumbel gave the following advice to then-incoming NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Gumbel’s HBO program, Real Sports.
“Before he cleans out his office,” Gumbel said, “have Paul Tagliabue show you where he keeps Gene Upshaw’s leash. By making the docile head of the players union his personal pet, your predecessor has kept the peace without giving players the kind of guarantees other pros take for granted. Try to make sure no one competent ever replaces Upshaw on your watch.”
Now that Gumbel has one less job, maybe he’s the guy to replace Upshaw.
And now that Gumbel is gone, maybe they’ll find someone to replace him with a slightly deeper voice.

He knew as much about the game as Diane Sawyer. Maybe NFLN can trade him for Robin Roberts.
Thank Belichick hes gone!

NFL Network should hire Gus Johnson. If this would happen, I would renew my subscription to the NFL Network.

I like Collinsworth. Always have. I hope he stays. I am very curious to see who replaces Gumbel. It’s probably someone on staff already. I honestly could see Faulk doing it if he chose to work hard to do it properly. He is very good at what he does, but they are looking for the play by play guy…I love NFLN.
Oh and SeanMartin, how could Gumbel singlehandedly drive you away from NFLN? I mean seriously the Network has solid coverage 24/7/365 with no trace of Gumbel except for 30 hours per year. And if it is a good game nobody would refuse to watch it just because Gumbel is calling it. He sucked, but if you watch anything but the lead games year around like on Sunday Ticket or local TV, you get as bad or worse on CBS covering Dolphins/Texans games. How could Gumbel drive you away from the other 267 days he is nowhere to be found on there?

Now that Gumbel is gone, maybe they’ll consider replacing him with an African American guy.

Bryant Gumbel is an extremely sharp guy. He understood what was being said about him. He’s one of the greatest television journalists of our time, and obviously NFL play-by-play was NOT for him, whatsoever. I hope he keeps haulin some ass on “Real Sports,” though.

now, if only fox will get rid of Joe Buck….or at least replace him for the NFL games. He needs to stick with baseball seeing as he’s just as boring.

Gumbel lost me with his comments about the winter olympics, something about “looking like a GOP convention” with no world class athletes. (No blacks = No sport) Personally, my favorite game of all time was the 1980 Olympic Hockey game against Russia.
If that isn’t racist, I don’t know what is. (I found it odd that Jimmy the Greek got fired, Rush Limbaugh got fired, but Gumbel didn’t)

I like Real Sports and Gumble there. Not as an in-game announcer though. I applaud this move. Carry on.

Careful now people…keep in mind that Joey Sunshine and Sean Salisbury are looking for a new gig…my only knock on Gumbel was, in my opinion, he was a racist.

Dear PFTalk:
I’ll miss Gumbel.
He was a top-flight announcer
with a sharp command of the facts who made accuracy
and honesty his trademark.

The game broadcasts will not be the same without Bryant Gumble. Now who is going to let us know that it’s “the two minute morning” before halftime and the end of the game. I guess there goes my dream of the ultimate awful announcing team with him doing play by play and Emmitt doing color commentary.
