As expected, the Miami Dolphins are talking to the agents for multiple players regarding the No. 1 overall selection in the draft.
On Wednesday, it was reported by the Miami Herald that the Fins are talking with Tom Condon of CAA regarding Michigan tackle Jake Long. Now, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the team is talking to another CAA agent (presumably Ben Dogra) regarding Ohio State linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston.
Other players who might be approached by the Dolphins include Virginia defensive end Chris Long, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, and Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan.
As we’ve previously explained, the team’s apparent objective is to play one player against the other, in the hopes of doing the best possible deal. And every player who has a chance at being the No. 1 overall pick must when assessing the offer attempt to predict where he’ll go if he’s not the top pick — and whether he’ll be paid as much or more at a lower slot than what the Dolphins are offering.
For players represented by the same agent (like Jake Long and Ryan) or the same firm (like Jake Long, Ryan, and Gholston), there’s a potential conflict of interest, which the NFLPA’s agent regulations have yet to address. For every agent who fears being hammered in the industry for doing a “bad deal” at No. 1, there’s an even bigger conflict of interest, which the NFLPA’s regs likewise don’t address. Because while it might be in the player’s best interests to take what he can get and be the first overall pick, it’s clearly not in the interests of the agent to be associated with a deal that doesn’t reflect a significant increase in the total package and guaranteed money paid last year to Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

This is getting to become stoooopid. A Rookie pay scale would also solve this problem. The NHL has used one for the longest time. These guys are supposed to be the future stars of the NFL and will hopefully carry the game for a long time. Why would you want to start your relationship / job on bad terms? There has to be movement on this from the Union and the Owners soon.

Leave it to the Tuna to turn the tables on the Agents for a change.
I can’t believe more teams holding the top pick don’t do the same thing.
The Mario Williams/ Reggie Bush/ Vince Young situation may have played out the same way, but I think the Texans just went with the safest pick and did not go RB becuse of the market implications.
This year the #7 guy on any teams draft board may go #1 and be the best player. Dorsey/ Ellis are very comparable, Either Long is a good safe pick. McFadden could be the #1 pick if chooses to sign a reasonable RB contract.
That would actually be the most interesting player for the Phins to get signed. He knows there is no way he is the #1 pick, but he could be if he will take Reggie Bush money.

Sure Miami. Let Chris Long slide on up in the draft so he can continue his dad’s legacy for yours truly.

The fins have stated several times that they will not talk to or enter in discussions with him.

Unless there is a clear cut #1 player coming out (which is getting rarer and rarer), why anybody would even want the #1 pick any more is beyond me. The amount of money that needs to be spent on the guy is so astronomical that it handicaps teams for years.

There is definitely somehting wrong with a system that allows a rookie to come into the league and get $35 million guaranteed without playing a down. Besides the top QB’s like Manning and Roethlisberger, how many of the big NFL stars get that kind of money. Its just ridiculous and it needs to change

Miami would be fine getting any of the top 5 players on their board. This is the best way to sign the player they want for the cheapest price.

I can’t wait to see how this plays out, or if it even does. Seems like a player may be interested in jumping on Miami’s offer, but I can’t imagine an agent going for it for fear of how would reflect on him.
I agree a rookie pay scale is the solution.

Mike, I really think you’re overstating the potential impact of a “bad deal” on the agent’s potential clients. Do you really think a player wouldn’t take the “conflict of interest” between Ryan and Long into account while assessing that agent’s track record? I dunno…if I was an athlete, I’d look at a lot of things regarding my agent, but this wouldn’t be one of them. It’s just a business reality.

It’s very conspicuous that all the articles mention the Dolphins speaking to Tom Condon specifically about Jake Long but leave out the fact that Tom Condon also represents Matt Ryan. Parcells is up to something. I suspect he is negotiating with both, and now Gholston too but has not allowed the info to leak that Matt Ryan is on his radar

It’s believed that Bush dropped to #2 because of stubborn negotiating tactics, and Russell was a huge PR nightmare for the Raiders. Every GM would have approached the #1 pick like this in 2008 (except for Matt Millen).

I’m sure the agents involved would talk amongst themselves, and they wouldn’t go for anything less than top dollar. It would likely take one of the top picks firing their agent to take less than what the agent thinks is appropriate.

what makes you think I won’t talk to McFadden’s agent and then sign and trade to Jerry for his two #1s this year and a #1 next?

This means the person they really want, is the third person they’ll negotiate with. Texans weren’t bluffing which will pay off here since all 3 of whoever they talk to, will want to be the first pick.
