Here’s a look at the perceived draft needs of the New Orleans Saints, with heavy input from Matt Miller and David Gardner of NewEraScouting.com.
Cornerback: The team’s best corner, veteran Mike McKenzie, tore an ACL near the end of last year, and he’s going to be 32 heading into this season. The Saints are hoping that last year’s third-round pick, Usama Young, will develop into a starter. At the very least, they’re hoping that he’ll compete for the starting job with free-agent acquisition Randall Gay. That would move last year’s worst free-agent signing, Jason David to the dime, if he can hold off newcomer Aaron Glenn. They reportedly are interested in Mike Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, one of whom likely will be the second corner taken. Later in the draft, they might like Terrell Thomas and Patrick Lee.
Defensive tackle: Both of the Saints’ starting defensive tackles at the beginning of last season, Brian Young and Hollis Thomas, will be 30 or older coming into this season. Even backups Kendrick Clancy and Antwan Lake will both be 29. The Saints are looking to improve against the pass and against the run. They were middle of the pack in both categories: nineteenth in sacks, fifteenth in opponent’s yards per carry. The bigger need, however, will be the pass rush, which would bolster the Saints’ secondary against the pass, and take pressure off defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant. The Saints might actually use the tenth pick in the draft at this position, if the right player is available. If Sedrick Ellis somehow manages to slip past the Bengals, who own the ninth overall pick, the Saints shouldn’t hesitate to take him. If they choose to wait until later in the draft, they could go for a player like Letroy Guion of Florida State.
Linebacker: The main concern of this corps is on the weak side. Scott Shanle is more valuable as a versatile backup than he is as a starter. The Saints signed former Panthers middle linebacker Dan Morgan with the hope that he would replace Shanle; however, he has only played in four games in the past two seasons and is getting up there in age. On the strong side, the Saints have defensive captain Scott Fujita. He has excelled in the position, but he lacks a serviceable backup. The Saints should look to add some youth to the position with a versatile young player who can play on either side and can be developed to take over the weakside if Dan Morgan can’t stay healthy.
Center: Entering free agency, the Saints had two centers ready to become free agents. Rather than signing starter Jeff Faine to a market deal (he received 6-year, $37.5 million contract from the Buccaneers), they decided to re-sign his backup, Jonathan Goodwin. A fifth-round pick of the Jets in 2002, Goodwin started two games at center last season. Many think that he will be able to seamlessly slide into Faine’s spot, but Faine has been a legitimate top-five center in the league over the past two seasons.Depth might be needed here; the Saints are reportedly interested in Kory Lichtensteiger (Bowling Green), who could be had on day two.
Tight end: Eric Johnson was not terrible last season, but he was still a bit of disappointment. Although he and veteran Mark Campbell (who missed all of last season) make up a decent duo, the Saints are looking for more of a playmaking tight end to complement their receivers. If they don’t trade for Jeremy Shockey of the Giants, Kentucky tight end/h-back Jacob Tamme could be a good fit here. Although he’s a bit small, he is very smart and is dynamic after the catch.
Running back: Deuce McAllister has appeared in sixteen games only once in seven seasons. No one doubts his production on the field; people just have trouble believing in his ability to stay on it. With McAllister gone for much of 2007, Reggie Bush was not able to run between the tackles, and career-backup Aaron Stecker is not the answer.Although undrafted free agent Pierre Thomas showed some ability at the position, the Saints still need to draft a downhill-style running back who can compliment Bush’s speed.
Quarterback: Veteran Mark Brunell was signed from the Redskins to backup starter Drew Brees, but Brunell is far removed from his best days. Sean Payton is a known quarterback coach, and he was largely responsible for the development of undrafted free agent Tony Romo. Don’t be surprised if the Saints take a quarterback on the second day, with an eye toward developing him for the future.

Didn’t the Saints also trade for Vilma?

One thing that was missed in this was that the Saints acquired LB Jonathan Vilma.
If Dan Morgan can stay healthy the Saint’s will have a darn good LB core.
Morgan on the weak side, Vilma in the middle, and Fujita on the outside. Barring any serious injuries I would imagine that this will be one tough team to run on.
I think secondary makes the most sense here for their 1st round selection. Jason David was awful last year and I think they immediately regretted that decision. Once again, another defensive player comes from a team who runs the “Tampa 2″ to a team that doesn’t and voila he doesn’t perform. The Tampa 2 is a unique defensive scheme that really can promote bloated stats. There are not many players that could go from a Tampa 2 scheme to another defensive scheme and have immediate success. John Lynch is one of the few I can think of off the top of my head.
I read somewhere not too long ago that there is a possibility that Deuce’s career might be over. That would be a sad day cause the guy is a fantastic runner and this would cause the Saints to immediately address this situation via FA and the draft…and early in the draft. I could see them going for someone like Forte from Tulane or maybe Ray Rice from Rutgers. Reggie Bush has seemingly proved that he isn’t an every down back and is more versatile when used sporadically all over the field rather than as the feature back.

‘Barring any injuries’ is a tough circumstance for this linebacking core to meet, unfortunately.
Vilma is coming of knee surgery, and while he was certainly a talented bargain, no one is sure just how healthy he’ll be.
Morgan has been a heck of a player when healthy, but now that we know more about the effects of multiple concussions, I’m concerned that he’s even playing at this point. He hasn’t finished a season recently, and just can’t seem to stay on the field.

The Ravens will Trade the Saints the 8th pick for the 10 and a 2nd round in 09 if Ellis is there The Ravens are either going to draft him or trade him. Thee is no chance he falls to much less past the Bungles, so if you want him you better call ozzie.

I certainly agree that these are all areas of need but I wouldn’t necessarily put them in that same order. The Saints biggest “obvious” need last year was that their defense couldn’t stop anyone. However the problem went a little bit deeper; the offense had a lot of big plays but couldn’t maintain drives at all. I saw countless drives where the Saints were in 2nd a 4 or 2nd and 3 and would run the ball twice and not get the first down. The defense was constantly on the field which had a lot more to do with their inability to stop anyone than the actual talent on the field. If Jonathan Vilma can return to form he will help to solve a lot of these woes. Same can be said for Dan Morgan, but I am not optimistic that a change of scenery will help him avoid injury.
I think that the #10 spot has tremendous trade value. If the Ravens don’t take Matt Ryan I could see the Falcons or the Dolphins trading back into the 1st to get him. Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Carolina, Minnesota and even Tampa Bay could be interested in getting Ryan. Last year’s #10 Amobi Akoye got a 6 year $15.4 million dollar deal which is a bargain compared with getting him in the top 5 and paying north of $30 million. I am dreaming that Ryan falls that far and Parcells offers up Jason Taylor and picks.
If Ellis falls to them I can see Denver or Houston making a push to trade up. Also a team could fall for a corner ala Revis and Jets last year and make a move. If the Saints can make a move down and grab an extra 2 or 3 I would like to see them do it.
Should the Saints stay I would hope that Ellis will fall to 10. If not I would rather we take Branden Albert than one of the corners. He can step in and play guard right away and eventually fill in for whichever tackle leaves or gets hurt first. I know this is where I differ from most fans but I think it’s more important to maintain strength, and the Saints strength is definitely their offense. By taking Albert the Saints will improve their running game which was woeful last year, and also give Brees more time. When Brees has time there is no one more lethal throwing down the field.
Also I don’t think RB is a real need position for the Saints. This is especially true if Deuce can recover from injury. Bush is not an every down back in the traditional sense, but the guy should be on the field most of the time. If the Saints can get back to using him as a scat back and pass catcher who occasionally runs the ball he will be a much more effective player. Brian St.Pierre was great last year and will only get better and could definitely be an effective player. Aaron Stecker is serviceable and will #3 or #4.
Other Spots to fill:
TE - Sorry Matt and Dave but Eric Johnson was AWFUL last year. Its one thing to drop a ball; it’s a whole other issue when it bounces off your hands and gets picked which happened at least 5 times last year. Is there a word for having less than 0 confidence? If there is that’s how I feel having this guy on the field.
If the Saints can get Shockey watch out. I am going on record right now that if he goes to NO he will have 1100 yards and 10 TD’s. He will be incredibly motivated and with Brees getting him involved the Shock will be back.
CB - Jason David is an above average cover 2 corner, but in a man up scheme like NO had to run David was viciously exposed. He does play the run very well so he has value, but he can not be relied on to cover top receivers.
DT/DE - The Saints have above average players across the line, but it never hurts to stock up on these guys.
C - Goodwin will be fine, but they do need to find a backup.
QB - Last year I was praying the Saints would steal Troy Smith with a late round pick. This year I hope we get Colt Brennan although I belive we can get him as a free agent as I don’t know if a team will draft him. Brees should still have at least another 4-5 years, but I think this guy has already played in a wide open offense and could benefit from having Sean Payton in his ear.
WR – If Meachem is the real deal (some scouts liked him more than Dwayne Bowe) than this isn’t a big need. But if a stud falls to them in the 3rd or 4th round I would like to see them grab him. Henderson is a speed demon but drops too many balls. Moore, Patten and Copper are just guys and didn’t do anything to distinguish themselves.

Vilma is considered the starter if healthy, which is why the no mention. Our feeling is that their need is primarily at outside linebacker.
Eric Johnson hasn’t been impressive, we all agree there. I continue to hear that he’ll be a back-up next year when the Jeremy Shockey deal goes down.
Meachem’s play will have a lot to do with the need at WR, but I wonder how much trust there is in the organization for him right now.

Matt you would probably know more about this, what actually happened with Meachem? I follow the Saints and I still have no idea what happened? It was after the draft right? Is he going to be ready this year? Its a complete mystery.

Meachem came into camp 15lbs overweight. He did drop the weight, but then he had trouble memorizing the playbook. I think some will remember Tyler Palko telling him the routes during the pre-season.
Meachem also reportedly hid his knee injury from the Saints. He eventually had surgery to repair a torn meniscus. His reason for missing the season was that he was rehabbing, but I do not believe he was ever placed on IR.

The Saints should trade up for Dorsey who would fit their scheme perfectly and free up Smith and/or Grant to get to the QB, which would in turn help out their smart, physical but not very athletic DBs. He would also help their quick, smallish LBs to get to the ball carrier. I don’t think Ellis makes it past the Bengals, and I could see 2 maybe 3 corners gone by #10 limiting their options at CB.

The Saints glaring needs are at CB. The offense is seemingly a top level defense. True in 2006, but last year they were not in sync, extremely inconsistent and just couldn’t run the ball. I agree that Jason David is a system CB…He’s not a good or even descent fit in N.O. McKenzie is old and coming off ACL surgery. Usama has yet to show anything. Glenn is old and Gay is to be an overpaid nickel CB. Certainly, if things work out and Will Smith gets signed, and Charles Grant can rebound, and we get pressure up the middle..It will help the CB’s in a system that plays man coverage all the time! Rogers-Cromartie is faster and taller than any worthy CB’s in the Draft! Do the Saints get him or go for Dorsey to help get a pass rush and bring some youth to a very old DT position? I think the Saints need to forget the Shockey talks and get serious about trading a 2nd round pick for Lito Sheppard…They know they are getting a Pro-Bowler to pair with McKenzie, maybe they move up and get LSU’s Dorsey. That kills 2 birds with one stone. Get better pressure and add a man CB who fits into N.O.’s defensive scheme (2 shutdown CB’s). Sure, Shockey’s an upgrade, but offensive weapons are less urgent than shoring up the defense. The running game should be the main concern with Duece coming off ACL and Microfracture surgery surgery. Pierre and Duece would be great if Duece can produce. Reggie is a 3rd down back and needs to be utilized in space in order to keep defenses honest. Meachem needs to become what he was drafted to be! The success hinges on the draft and a lot of luck! New Orleans has a few players that are high risk. They have some all-star talent’s that are known for getting injured (Duece, Morgan, Vilma, Bush, McKenzie, Harper, are all players who were on the sidelines last year for at least part of the season). Charles Grant has slowed a lot since signing a fat contract. Will Smith isn’t at the facility! I want to be optimistic, and it’s easy in the off season looking at the Saint’s talent on paper…But they’d need to get some consistency on offense, plug holes on defense, stay healthy and find a downhill runner to play should Duece not be ready. I’m crossing my fingers!

Ellis is a need and so is Porter. Porter isn’t a starter in 2008 though. Randall Gay better get a whole lot better this offseason, because Glenn is old and David is a scrub! I see a much imroved D-line which will help the Saint’s DB’s. LB is improved barring injury. Imagine Fujita on the strong side, Morgan on the backside and Vilma in the middle…That’s a strong group! Josh Bullocks needs to step up his play and Harper needs to stay healthy. Big Willie is signed, Grant is back and should be pushed by McCray (or deeper in the rotation). RB, TE and OL are concerns on the offense. Glad NOLA drafted a kicker (the first since Morten Anderson). Arrington should be a nice addition at possession reciever, but that’s a crowded position right now. DeMario Presley is another guy who can rotate in at DT right away..Big, Good Bull Rush,…Disruptive! OT from Nebraska..Safe Move..Could develop into a RT in a year or 2. Saints will have a great passing attack, and a much improved defense accross the board. Can they get a run game going with Pierre though. Reggie is great in space and at the slot, and Duece will not be at full strength (2 ACL’s and a microfracture surgery in 3 years). Aaron Stecker is a great leader team captain, but he’s a 3rd down back (like Reggie). Eric Johnson has been a letdown at TE and Shockey’s not going to be a Saint!
