A year ago, quarterback Jeff Garcia was able to parlay a great down-the-stretch performance with the Philadelphia Eagles into only a two-year deal in Tampa.
And now Garcia is crowing about the fact that the Bucs haven’t replaced the second year of the contract with a new deal.
Asked on Tuesday if he was disappointed by the absence of a new contract, Garcia said, “You could say that. Talks haven’t necessarily gone all that good.
“So in a way, it’s disappointing. At this point in my career, I’m no longer 24 or 25 saying, ‘I’m going to prove to you I deserve this.’ I feel like I’ve proved throughout my career. And I feel like at this time, it’s time to just work with me, and you know what I bring to the team. You know what I’ve done for the team, and you know how much more I can do. And now I have a year under my system.”
There might be even more to this one. According to the St. Petersburg Times, the team’s decision to rest Garcia for the last two weeks of the season prevented him from participating in 70 percent of the offensive snaps, preventing him from earning a “seven-figure bonus.”
Garcia will earn a base salary of only (only?) $2 million in 2008. He is 38 years old.

He deserves it. Without him, that team was going nowhere last year. You go from last place to winning the division, and then they wanna be cheap with him? He’s only got a year or two left in him, so why not just give him a good contract for the year?

I’m sure he isn’t going to address his age. Does he reeeeeallly expect them to give him a contract that will take him past 40 or it just about the cash?

Just why do these guys sign contracts at all? No matter what THEY agree to they are never happy with it and they view it was being the team’s fault and responsibility to make them happy. Get real!

Then he should have signed a 1 year contract to begin with, or at the very least negotiated escalators in the contract that would have kicked in if he had performed at the level he did last year.

Yea he’s underpaid by starting QB standards, but him not being 24 or 25 is EXACTLY WHY he’s gonna be hard pressed to get a long-term deal.

Garcia’s attitude is both as typical as it is ridicules for athletes these days. Two million dollars for one year. Let that sink in. Many fans can’t even afford to attend a game to watch these athletes earn that kind of money.

I think that a reasonable option for both sides to feel like things are fair here would be to have the Bucs kick some of that HUGE cap surplus into this year of Garcia’s deal. Additionally, with a lot of people guessing that the Bucs are going to pick a QB in this year’s draft (a lot of people think in rd 1, Brohm) then the Bucs would be well served by kicking one more year onto his deal as well, at a decent salary. They will still have cap room next year, and having someone thats competent in there to play while the expensive Rook learns the system for a year is invaluable.

god forbid he has to struggle to make due on only 2 million a year.nobody forced you to sign the contract so live with it. and how much of a signing bonus did you get to sign this terrible deal? that’s the one thing that always gets me when they start whining and people defend them with the well contracts aren’t guaranteed argument. right the contract is not but the bonus so no matter what happens or how bad they play you get a bundle upfront so the player is not getting screwed. so shut up and play already!

I don’t see the issue here as being whether Garcia should get a new extended deal at age 38- of course he should not. But it was obvious and blatant bad faith if they sat him the last two games to avoid the performance bonus. That is classless, sort of like firing Dungy. We start to get the impression that the Glazer family routinely operates that way.

The man is 38. It’s also a rough position for the Bucs, 2 mil is adequate. What do you expect to happen to you Garcia, no one wants to tag an old man. LET THE DREAM DIE!

Now I understand how the Yucs can carry all those QB’s on their roster. They don’t pay ‘em any money. Griese and Simms are probably getting about the same as Garcia.
Who will win their QB derby and who’s gonna go?

I can’t stand Jeff Garcia. Is there more of an aged and pompous cry-baby in the league? It seems every time the media has some type of coverage on him, the guys constantly complaining and whining about something. I’d say to just shut up or go back to the CFL, but I don’t want to get a call from your old man lobbying for what a “great kid” his 38 year old son is.

Garcia signed a 2 year, 10 million dollar deal. 3 million in signing bonus for each year of the deal. 5 million a year is a fair deal for 38 year old punching bag. To give more money to someone who plays so reckless would be foolish. Extend the deal but for the same pay rate.

WOW, what a boneheaded statement:
“At this point in my career, I’m no longer 24 or 25 saying, ‘I’m going to prove to you I deserve this.’ I feel like I’ve proved throughout my career. And I feel like at this time, it’s time to just work with me, and you know what I bring to the team.”
Is he under the impression that McKay is still the GM and signing boneheaded contracts, or is Carmella sucking (his cash) dry already??
I doubt the Buccaneers care what he did for the 49ers, Lions, Browns or Eagles……. He played well last year, but made some STUPID decisions in the playoffs.
There are bigger priorities for this team than signing a QB to a contract that will (over)pay him, well into his 40s.

This is just Garcia posturing. He will get a new deal, he does deserve it. Allen was prepared for this reaction. By Garcia signing a two year deal it essentially gave Tampa the option to negotiate exclusively with him if he panned out, which he did. This is the same type of contract Griese signed when he first came to Tampa. It’s these type of shrewd moves that’s allowed Tampa to be active the past two off-seasons. As far as sitting him the final few games to prevent bonuses, give me a break. He routinely took devastating hits that resulted in roughing the passer penalties and first downs. There’s nothing classless about the situation it’s a business. Both players and front offices use the media to better their situation with the public.

I agree with llon.
I think the Bucs, in good faith, should give him a newer contract with better pay. Especially with all the cap room they have. But even if they don’t, I don’t see Garcia holding out or anything.
