this is the right move for the Fins. jake long is the prototype nfl offensive tackle and will help john beck to develop. they are not as desperate for a de than they are an ot. miami's offense was terrible last year and their defense was probably as bad as it was because of the amount of time they spent on the field and that they are an aging group. i think parcells would look to get his bookend lt and look to next year to improve the defense or address it with the 2nd rounder. michigan is an offensive line machine. they churn out nfl guys year after year. jake long will be no different.

I could see Parcells doing something like the following:

1) Offer Long a contract
2) Offer Ryan a lowballed contract and basically try to get him to take it by telling him he's likely to take a quinn like nosedive
3) Ryan takes the offer
4) Fins trade Ryan to Atlanta or another team, setting the payscale and aquiring picks in the process. Then we draft Long and offer him a different, even lower then Ryan offer.

The way i see it is Lt is the most important position on the field. He also seems like a very safe pick and a could be a Joe Thomas type of player.

Oakland75, why don't you go practice padding your shoulders and applying your makeup so you can play pretend at your games.

The Dolphins may negotiate with QB Ryan but will not do so seriously. They need someone to protect the QB and Jake Long is the guy. The quarterbacks currently on the roster Beck and McCown will have an opportunity to be good quarterbacks with a much improved offensive line due to the draft and free agency.

All this talk about who has been a bust at what position is really irrelevant. You look at every 1st overall pick in every draft that player was thought to be a good pick at the time of the selection. Even David Carr and Tim Couch was thought to be able to turn a franchise around. No matter what the position is there is always a gamble with the 1st overall pick. All a team can do is pick the player that they think will most likely help their team. I am no expert but I would think character would be a big part into making a player into the 1st overall pick because even if that player fails at 1st they are more likely to over come their flaws. Mario Williams did not succeed until late in his rookie year. I think both Longs have great character and will be stars at their positions.

Jake Long is by far the best pick for the #1 spot. LT's are less risky, even with the recent Robert Gallery example. LT's dominate for a long time, whereas DE's tend to only perform at an elite level for a few years (and not always in the beginning).

So, saying all of that and knowing the Dolphins, Jake Long will not be the #1 pick. Hello Matt Ryan!

Uhhh, Oakland 75,

Your "Proud Organization" just had the 1st pick a year ago and was one game better, oh and Al Davis is still alive and you guys paid 28 mil for an above average but not great DL, and got Javon Walker and lost Porter and Moss, oh and it's in Oakland, and your fans are only matched in classlessness by the Jets fans. At least Miami has hope.

Did I mention Al Davis is still there?

Who has Parcells?

STFU

In response to the Robert Gallery comments, Jake Long is a bigger version of Joe Thomas, and as draft history go O-line and D-line are the least "bust"-able picks (ESPN.com did a great story a while back judging first round draft picks from the past 20 years by position and their ranks as a bust or not). I am still not thoroughly convinced that Matt Ryan is a great QB. As drafts go, the QB class this year is seriously lacking, so we have to ask ourselves as draft fans whether we are comparing Ryan to "potential" success he might have or to the other QB's in this class. Just an opinion...

Uh RonInCharlotte, your proud orgainization was last in the Super Bowl back in 1985 & you were a missed kick from being 0-16.
That's something to be proud of.

What you should be proud of is Tinker Bell is still on Dancing with the Stars.

So does that mean that the Rams could then open negotiations with Glenn Dorsey and Chris Long? This could develop into a very interesting situation.

Robert Gallery and Mike Williams were thought to be the safe picks also. Still a gamble at OT but less than with QB, RB or any other offensive position.

I assumed Mario Williams to be the top pick over Bush because of all the top DEs I could think of, he looked to be the best prospect, and Courtney Brown was the only recent guy at the position who could be a bust, but even he showed he was pretty good when healthy and on a half decent defense. Plus most guys who can rush the QB in college vs good competiton can do it in the NFL as well.

It is harder to project and evaluate offensive players, becuase scheme and surrounding personel blur the picture.

I was waiting for something like this to come out...It would be nice to see them tell a player who would not be considered #1 that they would take them and pay them such and such amount of dollars...But do you think that players agent is going to risk something like that or what?

As a die-hard finfan, I'm extremely happy with either of the Longs. I agree with RoninCharlotte that the best thing about this news is what it could mean for the future of rookie pay scales.

Robert Gallery and Mike Williams come to mind as top 2 and 4 picks that didn't do much and are considered BUSTS!

Jake Long is probably the safest pick of the group of players who have been projected to be the first taken. Look what Cleveland did after drafting Joe Thomas. There's something to be said about a QB not having to worry if there is a turnstile installed at LT every time he drops back.

I think it's great. If Miami can convince a player they want to take less at number one in order to guarantee before the draft begins that

a.) they will not be a hold out

and

b.) they will not slide

and

c.) they get to be known as #1

and

d.) they can play for a proud organization with no state income tax in close proximity to South Beach

and

e.) not have to play for Oakland

then Miami will create a huge stir in the rookie payscale, depending on how the next teams react, probably create holdouts in the next ten slots, and it will probably be the first tangible step in the creation of a slotted system for Round One.

This is actually riveting..
