The Chicago Bears have $16 million in 2008 salary cap space. And they’re likely to devote a nice chunk of it to defensive tackle Tommie Harris, who is signed through 2008, and linebacker Brian Urlacher, who is under contract through 2011.
So when will the deals be done? “Obviously, the sooner the better, so I don’t have to keep answering these questions for the next three months,” team president Ted Phillips recently said.
An extension for Harris is understandable, since he’s nearing the completion of his rookie deal. For Urlacher, however, he’s still got four years left under contract.
And it’s not clear that the Bears plan to do much to re-do the long-term deal Urlacher signed in 2003. “I never said we were talking about an extension,” Phillips said. “I never said that. I said we were talking to his representatives about how to look at his contract and try to educate them on the value of his deal. He signed a long deal, so . . . .”
So . . . what? Live with it? Honor your commitment?
As to the notion that the Urlacher deal reflected good money when it was signed, Phillips said, “It was. It still is.”
Yeah, this Urlacher thing could get ugly. He’s already boycotting voluntary workouts.
As to Harris, the real question is how much he’s worth? If Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly gets $18.1 million guaranteed, Harris arguably is worth $28 million, maybe more.
“I would love to be a Bear,” Harris said. “I’m patiently waiting. I’m very optimistic. I’ll leave the negotiations to the front office and my agent. I feel like they’re going to do a great job, so right now I’m just staying focused on the off-season workouts and get my body in the best shape possible.”

Urlacher is over rated. He would have been better off if he played R-OLB. His leverage is bad, both when engaing O linemen and now in sniffing around for an extension with 4 years left on his deal.
Ray Lewis is still a lot better than he is and he is having to play out his entire contract before getting a new one.
Urlacher had all the leverage he needed to get a better deal. Blame your agent and learn to play DE or OLB and you will have a better argument.

It’s not as if Tommy Harris is a healthy or durable player he’s been hurt a lot and Urlacher is suffering a bad back so how much do you pay these guys? Both are excellent players when healthy but what kind of $$$$$$$$$$$?

Urlacher is just out of line on this. He is making what he’s worth at his age and health. He has had the great fortune of playing LB in a gigantic football market. He has raked in massive endorsement money becuase he’s a Chicago Bear LB, he has been given a good contract already, and he has four years left. There is really nothing left to discuss about it. I’d rather the bears make a chad johnson out of him then re-do that deal. He’s under contract until 2011. He can’t play for anyone else unless they let him, he can in no way afford to sit out any length of time, and clearly he has medical issues that will follow him through the remainder of his career. The bears should try to trade him now while he still has value. If no trade is possible, I say make him play through his contract or goes home to watch the NFL on TV. He has absolutley zero leverage in this. Give it up.

Tommy Kelly and Tommie Harris came into the league the same year. Through their first 3 seasons (before Kelly moved to DE last year), Kelly actually had better overall statistics than Harris. The only reason more people don’t know about Tommy Kelly is because he doesn’t play on a top defense like Harris. But that says more about his teammates than him.

I love the guy, but at this point in his career, is Urlacher even worth the $$$?

As a lifelong Bears fan, i am happy to see the braintrusts being proactive with players necessary to the future success of the team. its regrettable that someone like Tommy Kelly and the brilliant financial strategists of the Oakland Raiders have set a steep bar for Bears management and the Rosenhaus brothers to hurdle but it is clearly something that must be done. Harris is worth every penny and much more than someone as unproven as Kelly. Then again Bears change jinglers more times than not would rather count pennies than toss a few Lincoln heads to their own players. Urlachers situation is different though. granted he is under contract till 2011 but i feel in this situation he is merely looking for 2-3 years max added with 10-12 more million guaranteed to what he already is under contract for, which equates to his current yearly salary as is. The Bears owe that much to the face of the franchise and arguably the league. however, as the NFL owners and players alike consistently demonstrate, nobody owes anybody, anything. Heres to hoping Jerry Angelo placates the situation and continues to ink the players of the present and future so they dont wonder the hue of the grass elsewhere as with Bernard Berrian and Brendon Ayenbadjo.

Cmon, to say Urlacher is underrated? You need a nice smack across your neck. The guy has been a stud for years. Theres a reason that Briggs stayed put. Every LB that has left seeking a big pay day, has been a bust on they’re other team with only Colvin being borderline. He makes the players around him better. With that said, He was the highest paid at the time for his position when hesigned the contract, thats a little his bad, but he has been the face of the franchise and there has to be some middle ground.
As far as Harris goes. Thats a no-brainer, and theres no way Angelo is going to let him go, he’ll be signed very soon.

So let me get this straight, Brian Urlacher is old and was playing hurt on top of that….and yet he gets 123 tackles (10th for LB), 5 sacks (T 14th), defenses 17 passes (T 1st), 5 of which were INT (T 2nd) and one of those he returns 85 yards for a TD (T 2nd). That may make him the most versatile defender in the game, regardless of position.
One must also remember the scheme he plays most of the time is a Tampa-2, so his opportunities to get the QB are very limited compared to 3-4 LB’s. Not only that, remember the Tampa-2’s designed to funnel plays to Lance Briggs at Weakside LB, yet Urlacher’s outperformed him every year with the exception of 04, when he only played 9 games because of injury.
I think he’s supposed to get roughly $3.65 mil this year. Good money no doubt, but chump change in the NFL. If memory serves he has the 14th highest LB contract. If there are 13 better LB’s, I’ll eat my #54 jersey.
