Can you consider a demotion a punishment? I'd guess that it would be pretty easy to defend against any suit. Just claim you redo the rosters every year and obviously you can't put a person you haven't seen yet this year on the top of it. Besides, are you really not allowed to promote a player that shows up for voluntary workouts? I think proving it was a punishment and not just a personnel decision would be difficult.

Even as a Bears fan I think Urlacher's smoking something they scraped off of Ricky Williams. Come on, he thinks he's going to get more money when it's widely known that he has a rapidly degenerating arthritic back. Combine that with off-season neck surgery and we now have a player the Raiders will clamor to sign.

Anyone who hasn't seen this one coming has their head in the sand. It's been coming since the new CBA was renegotiated. The Bears have plenty of cap room and have been conspicuously silent during free agency. It's time to use that space to re-do an antiquated contract. It will also be a popular move in the locker room to reward the face of the franchise.

As a side note, Rosenhaus is supposedly on his way to Chicago to discuss the extension of Tommie Harris' contract. The Bears need to get these two guys locked up and start looking to the draft.

this is ridiculous. The NFL cannot keep paying players more money just because they "feel" underpaid. Urlacher in particular has nothing to gripe about. He plays in one of the biggest football markets in the world, and has benefited enourmuosly from it. He has raked in huge dollars, as a media figure, through endorsements and advertisements simply because he is a good linebacker in Chicago. If you don't think Urlacher has benefited from playing in chicago, simply compare him to Zach Thomas. Sure he got his share of coverage and endorsements, but nothing near Urlacher. No LB ever got the media coverage Urlacher did with a subpar team. He has only gone to the playoffs 3 times in his whole career (and was one and done twice). No-one else would have had that kind of press with that kind of team record. He agreed to the contract he is under and has 3 years left on it. Situations like this are exactly why the NFL (and many other sports) are going to be heading toward strikes in the near future. NFL players get away with murder with their contracts. If their underpaid, they hold out. If theyre on a bad team, they hold out. If they want to live closer to their hometown, they hold out. If they dont like the coach, they hold out. If a player who is less skilled gets more money then them, they hold out. The only reason a team should pay a player in Urlachers situation more, is if he is willing to take reduced pay with dropping performance. But of course, that would be unfair. Oh the poor NFLPA, theyre always getting dumped. By the way, I'm a huge bears fan, and I love Urlacher but this is ridiculous.

Haha. The Bears cry wolf to the NFL about Briggs tampering, and it scared off the Niners from signing him. Now they've created themselves a lovely situation. Pay their linebackers.

Urlacher is worth what Briggs is worth at the very least. But it isn't funny how Briggs was in the similar situation last year? Is Urlacher gonna pull the, "I'm never playing for the Bears again" card?

It sounds as though they are sharing the stick. What worked for one will work for the other, right? Urlacher simply isn't worth more. He has years left on his current "big boy" decision, the contract he agreed to, why is he complaining? He isn't getting any faster, he isn't getting any better, why should the Bears (or any other team) pay more for him? He should focus on getting to the "voluntary" workouts just so the team remains interested in keeping him through the end of his career. He should man up. The fact that he isn't does not surprize me, though, his ego is deflating.
