With an offense that can score a decent number of points but a defense that can’t consistently stop the other team from scoring more, the New Orleans Saints continue to attempt to upgrade their weaker side of the ball.
The team has announced the acquisition of veteran cornerback Aaron Glenn.
Glenn was a first-round pick of the Jets, way back in 1994. After eight seasons in New York, he spent three with the Houston Texans and two with the Dallas Cowboys. The 35-year-old Humble, Texas native played for the Jaguars in 2007, appearing in five games and starting four.
He has 41 career interceptions, and he has returned six of them for touchdowns.
With the Saints, Glenn likely will compete with Jason David for the nickel position behind Mike McKenzie and Randall Gay. David, who arrived from the Colts a year ago as a restricted free agent, was repeatedly targeted (usually successfully) by opposing defenses in his first season as a Saint.

Sean Peyton will know Glenn from their time together in Dallas, but he’s a longshot to have much effect on that defense.

I think this move allows the Saints to take the best player available at number 10. Although everyone thinks (myself included) that a corner is the Saints most pressing; they also could have a tremendous DT or OT fall to them.
In that situation the Saints could take an Ellis, Dorsey, Clady etc if they made it there and hope that Glenn has 1 year left of atleast average football.

Any competition at CB is good. He could beat out David for a nickel position.

For the future repliers of this entry. Do you think that The New Orleans Saints will be good this year, as in a playoff contender? Will Reggie Bush break out of his shell?
For me, I think the Saints will be above average . Bush will be disappointing in terms of being a reliable running back, but he’ll still have his freakish skills and catch a lot of passes. How are the Houston Texans feeling now about the flak they took for passing on Bush and Vince Young? Probably pretty vindicated (for now). The team does deserve credit for foreseeing that Mario Williams was definitely a pro prospect, and boy have he shown it. (Thanks, Emmitt.)
Back from my ramble (I don’t ramble!) The defense for the Saints should be improved based on what I’ve been reading … but seeing is believing, and I haven’t seen a good Saints D in a while.

so now jason david is the highest paid 4th corner on a depth chart in the league making about 3-4 million to play left bench…cool.

yet again the saints continue to doom themselves on defense by becoming older, and more injury prone.

For the price this a good pick up for them. I mean, if you REALLY wanted a good veteran presence and wasn’t concerned with the price, I’d call up Law. But, Glenn is still a capable defensive back who can line up in the nickel packages pretty much anywhere. In their division there isn’t a lot a big play recievers that Glenn will have to take one-on-one. Besides White and Smith Glenn can easily slide into zone coverage as a safety or corner.
As for the topic change listed above:
I do think that they’re contenders. Meachem has a nasty chip in his shoulder and is out for blood. As long as they address both sides of the line and add a cornerback later in the draft I think they’ll be good to go. A healthy Bush/Stecker combo will be pretty deadly. I also think Bush will get 1,100 yards some how on the ground. Some how, some way, he’ll get it. But don’t ask me why…maybe Kim Kardashians huge butt?

Aaron Glenn may be old, but he’s still quick and he is a good veteran presence. He was the first guy to pick off Jeff Garcia last year. Does he have one more good one in him?

Glenn will turn 36 this July. He played in 5 games last year. He has 2 INTs in his last 21 games. Aaron is on the outside looking in, as I see it.

I have a hard time calling this an upgrade, even over Toast. Five years ago, this would have been a terrific move, but Glenn has lost much over the years. As for how good the Saints are going to be, a lot (too much, in my opinion) depends on the health of Morgan and Vilma at LB, and Randall Gay doing well outside of the Patriots system. Get a LB and CB on Day One of the draft, and then we’ll see. Offensively, they’ll be fine, but that’s not why they missed the playoffs last year.
