The Cincinnati Bengals released on Monday running back Quincy Wilson, one of the various members of the team who was arrested in the past.
But the media (most notably, the Associated Press) is unfairly implying that the move is the result of a sudden get-tough approach by the Bengals to players who have been in trouble with the law.
The truth is that he previously had been cut by the Bengals on September, and was re-signed on December 26, four days before the 2007 regular-season finale.
That said, it’s possible that Wilson might have run his mouth after his teammate at West Virginia, Chris Henry, was released last week following his fifth arrest since entering the league in 2005. Since the team is merely engaging at this time in voluntary offseason workouts, there would be no apparent football reason to cut Quincy loose.
Wilson was a seventh-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2004. He’s best known for this classic catch-and-run from 2003, when he ran through, over, and around a defense that included three future first-rounders — Vince Wilfork, Sean Taylor, and Brandon Meriweather.
The game also featured plenty of jawing (and more) between future first-rounders Pacman Jones and Kellen Winslow.
But Winslow had the last laugh; his incredible catch on fourth down fueled the late comeback by the Hurricanes.

That’s a good point. The AP article implication was obvious, and it might indeed be correct. If the story was breaking news, it’s fine to only have a story that has a few grafs inverted pyramid-style. I haven’t checked, but the Quincy Wilson story ought to be updated to be fair, with other possible reasons for his release (performance-based?). To leave the story as is for an extended period of time isn’t the right thing to do.

Kelly Jennings was also a 1st round pick from that Hurricanes defense.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with having Chris Perry possibly coming back healthy (first round pick 2004, great receiving RB which the Bengals need), Kenny Irons trying to come back from a knee injury (second round pick 2007), Kenny Watson who performed very well last year, DeDe Dorsey who in limited playing time had a great YPC, and of course the possibility that Rudi Johnson could come back from his roughed up hamstring and run another 1400 yards.
How many freakin running backs does a team need?
Associated Press dropped the ball on this one.

Meriweather definitely got his cherry popped on that play. He probably wouldn’t be anywhere if it wasn’t for that….wait, where is he now…? (supposedly NE).

Seeing how it seems that everyone is running there mouth in my beloved Cincy, it could be he was running his, but that is assuming so.
I see it as Cincy making room for another RB. Nothing more.
They have of course #9 then…..
46, 77, 97, 112, 145 before getting to the 6th round!
Forte could be available also Choice, Rice and Forsett.
This is nonstory to me.

Who cares? Quincy Wilson was a non-point in their offense. I actually think it is a testament to how bad Wilson really is. Rudi Johnson is inconsistent, Chris Perry can’t stay on the field, and Kenny Irons probably won’t be ready to go this year! Seems to me that the Bengals would be doing all they could to keep RB’s…who knows though. Mike Brown is running this organization into the ground.
I feel bad for Carson Palmer. He is actually a decent guy and a solid QB. If I were him I would ask to get traded so I could try to finish my career with a team that actually cares about fielding a winning team and not a bunch of scabs on defense and show-boats on offense.

Rudi Johnson inconsistent? 2003: 1103 total yards, 9 TDs (not bad for only starting 5 games and nudging Corey Dillon out). 2004: 1538 total yards, 12 TDs. 2005: 1548 total yards, 12 TDs. 2006: 1433 total yards, 12 TDs. The Bengals offense took a step back last year in part because Rudi got hurt (I guess injuries make you inconsistent?). Quincy Wilson is a practice squad player and he’ll go to some other practice squad so the Bengals can take a stab at this deep pool of RBs.

This is a performance/numbers issue for the Bengals, not some new conduct policy.

Does this mean my Quincy Wilson Bengals jersey is worthless? Crap! And I just found a home for my Khalid Abdullah jersey in my den!
By the way, the first poster in this string, Nos2o, “The Bengals are free falling and nothing can stop them”? Weak. How do you “free fall” from 1 playoff appearance in 18 years? Christ, I hope my Who-Dey fan parachute is in working order.
