I just read the article on Ted Thompson’s draft strategy. Maybe he should learn to look at need a little more often, both in free agency and the draft. Having been the GM for the final 3 years of Favre’s career, “Trade Down” Ted failed to gather the needed talent in order to make the most of the time he had left. Very sad. While I can go through each of his drafts and pick them apart for one reason or another, I’ll give you the worst example of bad judgement and how drafting the “Best Player Availble” in last year’s 1st round pick for the Packers, J. Harrell. Taking a player who was hurt 3 of 4 years in college and at the deepest position on the team was idiotic. Perhaps everyone who watched the Giant’s rip the Packer secondary will understand how another talented corner or safety might have made the difference in an OT loss to the Giants. Pathetic.
Oh and before someone thinks I am picking on just that pick, I would also like to pick on Ted T. for not making the free agent investments necessary in the past 3 years, despite having now $100m+ in free agency over the past 4 years. Ted recently said that they didn’t need the cap room, regarding Favre’s over $11m cap room that the Packer’s will receive once he files his retirement papers. Way to make the most of the all the tools at your disposal Ted. Hey Ted, you needed starting caliber guards since you let Wahle and Rivera go, nice job in getting guys who will not only never sniff a pro bowl, but who will be lucky to keep their QB healthy this year. While I am at it, you still need upgrades at safety, LB, TE, and both Guards. You also need another corner and Tackle who could step in when your over the 30 corners and tackles get hurt. Since you have been totally inactive in free agency (kick yourself in the butt for the Randy Moss fiasco), you get no slack. If you would have added Moss last year, when Favre offered to cough up the $3m, or grabbed a corner with that first pick, instead of wasting it, we just might have been hanging that 13th NFL Championship banner.

What is the gaping hole the Packers need to fill exactly? They are young everywhere except CB. They are stacked at WR. D-line is solid. Underrated LB corps. Breakout rookie at RB. They need a TE in what appears to be a deep TE draft year. The Pack is coming off a 13-3 season. All Rodgers needs to do is play within himself and the playoffs should be in reach. He doesn’t have to do it by himself. The Pack is in much better shape than a lot of teams now. It’s been a while since GB was drafting duds like Jamal Reynolds. Lighten up. Thompson is doing just fine.

A stiff-arm facemask penalty? Another part of the NFL’s clever plan to create a huge catastrophe? Seriously, I had to check the calendar to verify that April Fool’s Day had passed.
A stiff-arm usually contacts the leading part of the would-be tackler’s body which would almost always be the helmet area (neck, face, head) and shoulder pads. Thus most stiff-arms have always been illegal and now will be flagged for 15 yards?
What about intent? Flagrancy? I mean, I can see throwing a flag if a runner has one guy left to beat and blatantly grabs his face mask and hurls him to the ground. But what about the runner who sticks out his arm to ward off a LB, incidentally contacting the face mask, while looking the other way toward a safety who’s closing on him? I’ve seen that a lot more often than the first situation.
At the very least, this new enforcement needs some clarification or the first time an Adrian Peterson 60-yard TD scamper gets called back because he incidentally contacted a defender’s face mask while busting through traffic a lot of NFL television viewers will start developing a sudden interest in what Tiger Woods is up to on the other channel.

Why don’t they just change the game to flag football?

I never understood how if a defensive player even grazez a facemask he gets a five yard penalty… but an offensive player can punch the facemask with his open palm and its all good.
The rules committee got one right… write it down!

I’d also like to point out that it is use of the hands that makes it illegal. Jim Brown’s forearm knockout punch would be perfectly legal - and a much more exciting play to watch!

This stiffarm penalty enforcement is just plain stupid! Look a defensive player that throws hands to the face of a ball carrier is dangerous because the ball carrier has either one or both of his arms around the ball. He is by far more vulnerable because if he were to try and defend himself he’s forced to put the balls safety in danger. But a friggin’ defender has both arms free to get after the ball carrier and is more than happy to lay the wood to the carrier should the opportunity present itself. Any defender that gets his head cracked back because he can’t stop it deserves it. This football people. As Clay Davis would say “Sheeeeeeeit”.
