We sure hope we didn’t get Patrick Hruby in any trouble.
Hruby is an excellent writer and a friend of PFT (we actually have a few, surprisingly). Hruby penned a profile of the site for the Washington Times in 2004, while we still looked like a fifth-rate Internet craphole. (We’ve since graduated to fourth-rate.)
In a new feature for ESPN.com’s Page 2, Hruby has been tracking absurd quotes in power-ranking style. Volume 2 of the Absurd Quote Power Rankings moved from No. 9 to No. 5 the following gem from ESPN’s own Emmitt Smith: “What happened tonight, the strength of the Patriots team got debacled.”
So we posted a blurb on it, and went about our business.
But then something happened. The list got changed. Emmitt’s quote fell from No. 5 all the way to, as Hruby says with a jab at Mike Tyson, “Bolivian.” This link goes to the revised version of the Absurd Quote Power Rankings, where Emmitt is off the list. (Actually, Emmitt’s quote is still mentioned, but only as being dropped from the roster.)
And although the image on the cached version of the page with Emmitt perched at No. 5 disappears a split second after the page from the Google search loads, we found an older version of the Absurd Quote Power Rankings, Volume 2, right here.
Just in case that disappears as well, we lifted the image (and in so doing surely violated one or more copyrights).
Other revisions were made as well between 10:04 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. on Friday, but the reasons for those other changes aren’t apparent. None of the others whose words exited the list work for ESPN. Emmitt does, and the disappearance of the portion of the item poking fun at Emmitt’s struggles with the English language makes us (and presumably others) believe that ESPN doesn’t like its own online writers pointing a finger and laughing at the pimples on the butts of the network’s on-air talent.

Debacled. Genius. I want his writers name. I can’t wait for his empowered HOF induction speech where he tries to top Irvin’s speech. It will be a train wreck, cheesy, not heart felt but calculated, and will probably be used as how not to do an acceptance speech. I am a True boys fan but once Emmits helmet is off, He just looks uncomfortable fitting in. Put him on the field again, and he is A Stud. The only way he can top Irvins speech is if he goes Shirtless and sings the Mikshake song for the time allotted.

Of course they had to remove Emmitt’s little pearl. It’s just like when a company has a contest and employees of the company are not allowed to participate. It just wouldn’t be fair. Besides, who can compete with Emmitt? He has some God given talent with the English language that the rest of us will never have.

I specifically addressed this in the response to the other blog entry. Brian wants credit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Haha. Sooo suspicious how Emmitt went missing. C’mon ESPN! Have a little bit of fun with it all.

Maybe ESPN figures we all know they’re the worldwide joke of sportscasting without pointing it out themselves.

To foober…
This is a football forum. Take your political opinions outside.
Additionally, the next time you feel the urge to type your opinion on the leader of our country, try to recall why you have the freedom to make such comments. It may have something to do with the individuals who’ve defended those rights.
Obviously, not everyone in this country agrees with your war crimes view, President Bush and Vice President Cheney may be considered heros to some of us. The step to the plate and make decisions against public opinion to protect all of us, punks as yourself included.

NCEF:
“Take your political opinions outside.”
I like how you followed that with 2 paragraphs of your own political opinions.
Is “debacled” even the most ridiculous quote in Emmitt’s broadcasting career. Certainly the “blowed” up series is at least as worthy a mention on this inane list.

Are the rankings based on the quote or the one who said it? Because perhaps that’s just one quote to sum up the complete works of Emmitt. They can’t justify having him occupy 5 of the top ten slots, can they?

NCEaglesFan, you tell foober to not present his political opinions, but you can? And this is a forum. One can write whatever he or she wants if it’s approved by whomever censors this stuff. From my experience, 95 percent of what I write makes it on these boards. (Here I was going to type one of my comments that didn’t make it for fun, but then I just realized that that might render this whole posting null and void haha.)
And to call Bush and Cheny heroes is laughable. Tell that to the 4,000+ dead soldiers and the shattered region and our economy and people who need health care and people who were sucked into the sub-prime mortage crisis … but you think that, Eagles.

To carry your reasoning to its logical conclusion. Why not dispense with democracy, ballots and elections and install demagogues such as yourselves to rule by the vagaries of surveys and polls which can be manipulated according to the wording of the questions posed to bring about the desired results through confusion and obfuscation?

It looks like this conversation has been debacled. Time for this string to get blowed out.
