USC coach Pete Carroll was reportedly unhappy with one of the drills that NFL coaches and scouts observed his former players run through at USC’s pro day workouts this week.
According to Adam Rose of the Los Angeles Times, the players engaged in “a hand-to-hand combat drill,” and Carroll wasn’t happy to see it. Carroll reportedly said, “That won’t happen again here.”
USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis said of the drill, “That was a sleeper. I didn’t know that one was coming. You see it on film but you’re never quite ready for that until it happens. That drill’s a doozy, man.”
It’s unclear why Carroll was unhappy with the drill, but ultimately, pro days exist for NFL teams, not the colleges that host them, and it would be surprising if Carroll actually did something to prevent scouts and coaches from running the drills they want at future USC pro days.

I can understand why Carroll would be upset.
The better USC players appear at pro day, the better there draft stock.
Thats a huge bargaining chip when recruiting. Especially in a year that he doesn’t has a borderline top ten pick. 2004 he had a one top 20, ‘05 he had one top ten, ‘06 he had two top tens, then in ‘07 he had nobody pick 45.
Look at what Mario Williams good numbers did for him? The guy soared up to the top! Why else would the coaches at USC spend time prepping players for Pro Day?

I believe the coach in that photo is KC Chiefs Defensive line coach Tim Krumrie. He’s famous for leading this drill at pro days as a test of stamina and will. Google search “Krumrie Drill” and you’ll see. It seems like scouts put a great deal of stock in how defensive linemen perform in this drill.

This has totally got to be the Chief’s Tim Krumrie running this drill. I’ve looked for a confirmation but haven’t found one anywhere yet. He’s notorious for playin’ “Choke a Bitch” with prospects to see who is a warrior. That’s how last year they discovered Alan Branch was “soft”.

Maybe if his players knew this drill they wouldn’t have lost to Stanford last season?

That looks like Tim Krumrie, the D-line coach of the Chiefs and Mondovi, WI native (non sequitor alert!). He’s the Bengal who some of you may remember had his ankle absolutely explode on him during Super Bowl XXIII. It was Theismannesque.
He’s a bit tightly wound, so I can conceivably see that drill going overboard about a thousand different ways. If that’s, in fact, him.

What a candyass. The Krumrie drill is well known for seperating the men from the crybabies at D-line. Tell Carroll that if his future first-round D-linemen can’t hand;e an old man who last saw serious action when he got his leg snapped in the 88 Super Bowl, they don’t deserve to be drafted.
This isn’t the first DT to get his ass handed to him by Krumrie.

Last seasons Hard Knocks show on HBO… I found this clip which is only about .00000005% of the actual cussing and vulgarity (I laughed every time Krumrie came on, he is a trip). Here is one of the little clips

Glenn Dorsey better pray the Chiefs dont draft him because if Krumrie says he is going to blow his knee out… hate to see a flash back and then a fist fight!

Whatever keeps them from doing hand to hand combat with their wives.

Perhaps former Trojan OJ Simpson was leading this drill?

Boo f–king hoo, come on Pete, you should know what it takes to make it in the big boy league as a player, toughness. If you want to get back into the big boy league best not piss off the people who already work there.
Anyone else notice that since Chow has been gone that USC QB play has been pretty terrible?

Coach Pete preps his player to the last step, he’s a great player coach. This is one drill he does train his guys for, so they look less talented.
This drops some value and he loses credit as a stepping stone to the NFL.

I have’nt seen the drill, but refered to as “Hand to Hand Combat”, one might think that coach Pete, is trying to keep it “USC”, not “UFC”.

That’s why Carroll is suited for College and not the NFL!

the Krumrie test is garbage. It was that test that led the Bills to reach for Tim Anderson in the 3rd a few years ago. Anderson was absolute trash and now a backup in Atlanta. I think the test is more about Krumrie’s own ego than it is about anything else.

Pete doesn’t want back in the league, he’s king of LA and isnt’ going anywhere.
Also, USC QBs have been terrible without Chow? Where are you getting that from ?

Tape. When Chow was there you had Palmer and Leinart putting up huge numbers and won Heismans and national titles; since Chow left the SC QBs have been. . .

Cave,
FYI… without Chow Leinart was a Heisman finalist and led his team to the National Championship game. Also without Chow Booty was on the Heisman watch list his Senior season until he broke his finger, and led his team to 2 Rose Bowl victories. Considering QBs did win 2 Heisman’s while Chow was at SC, I can understand saying the QB performance has dropped (kind of hard for it not to - you cant win the Heisman every year). BUT IT IS ABSURD TO SAY THAT SC’s QB PLAY HAS BEEN TERRIBLE - YOU AND I MUST HAVE A DIFFERENT DEFINITION OF TERRIBLE (Miami and FSU are examples of TERRIBLE QB play not SC)
