A league source tells us that Browns G.M. Phil Savage not only feared that the Cowboys would sign quarterback Derek Anderson with an eye toward trading him to the Dolphins, but also worried that the ‘Boys would pull the sign-and-trade thing by acquiring Anderson and shipping him to the Ravens.
Though it wasn’t likely to happen, it’s further evidence that Savage needs a little less caffeine in his diet.
Meanwhile, obtaining the eighth overall pick probably would have been a stopover on the way to a higher spot, with the Cowboys using that pick plus something more to get into position to get McFadden.

So the plan was for Dallas to give up a 1st (#28) and 3rd to get Anderson, then give up Anderson and another 1st (#22) for #8…only as a “stopover on the way to a higher spot” for McFadden?
Savage needs to quit hanging out with that nut Kucinich, also of Ohio.

Did this supposed sign and trade happen before or after Savage visited the aliens for his medical check-up?

I don’t get it.
Why wouldn’t the Dolphins deal directly with the Browns? What leverage would the Cowboys have to successfully arbitrage? Would this indicate, Parcells and Jones working together? That’s the only way I could see the Dolphins paying more for a 3 way trade, than they could have done in a 2 way trade.

The Ravens drafted Derek Anderson in 2005, then released him prior to the start of the season (I don’t know if they were hoping for him to clear waivers to put on their practice squad or just gave up on him). So I doubt they would trade a high 1st round pick for someone they had and let go.

bgman,
he was on their practice squad. Phil, who formerly worked for the Ravens, scooped him up and put him on the Browns roster. Ozzie and Ravens have been pissed about that ever since. Obviously, the Ravens didnt know what they had in him.
I think declining to up an offer by a million or two to keep even the chance of your starting qb from going to your qb-troubled division rival would be crazy.

First I understand the approach. Browns dont have nothing but Anderson, where as Dallas Gives up a 28th (anderson) and 22nd and a (3rd rounder to Browns)for top pick. Thats alot, compared to just 22nd and 28th and they keep their 3rd rounder. That Balt deal, doesnt make sense. Why? Baltamore gives their pick to Dallas for DA, when they could just obtain him from Cleveland. I hate to say it but I could believe the Dolphin Rumors, or Balt going after him. Balt taking him, then he continues to play like week 2-10 would make alot people mad. Lets face it, the draft hasnt had any strong top picks let alone a true blue chip, that will dominate being drafted 8th. I am out of here, thank again Profootball, have to admit, you bring the scoops better than espn

Ravens released him hoping he would pass waivers. You know who they kept instead of Anderson?…..Kordell!

Phil’s not paranoid he made a good decision. Why should he let the Cowboys or any other team deal with Miami leveraging our Quarterback? Let Miami or someone else deal with us directly so we get the full benefit of the transaction. Every team is seeking advantage over the other and we are in NO position to give anything away.
The Browns REALLY want BOTH Quarterbacks this year anyway. They have to make a decision this year and they want to make sure they pick the right QB. Was Anderson a ½ wonder? Is Brady Quinn the elite Quarterback we all hope he is? The Browns have got to find out THIS YEAR. That 7-million dollars Anderson gets next year (if he is on the team) is very telling. The Anderson Quinn thing is a 1-year experiment.
IN PHIL WE TRUST!!!

This guy is fricking retarded. So the Cowboys are going to give this guy a guaranteed signing bonus, which will get accelerated into the cap as soon as he is traded to the Dolphins or Ravens, and screw themselves with the cap this year. All because the Browns had a better season than what Jerry Jones thought they would have and he is MAD!!! OOOHHHH… Give me a break. He needs to take a few Zoloft and go chill out somewhere.

IF other teams were even thinking about deals like those described, Phil did a great job signing Anderson to keep the Browns in the driver seat. I’d rather he do that, than see Anderson pulled out from under us with nothing left to do but whine about, ala Seattle losing Steve Hutchinson.
It might be paranoid if nobody at all was interested in Anderson, but I find it hard to believe that nobody was interested. He may still have questions about him, but he’s still a huge upgrade over anything that Miami or Baltimore have.

Cowboydan: Why would the Cowboys have to take a cap hit? I’m sure the contract could be structured so that any “signing” bonus wouldn’t be paid until he was traded to his final team, so that the new team would take the hit.
If the Cowboys would’ve/could’ve done it, it would have been a smart, if slightly underhanded, move. But I’m sure they’d be alot less concerned about the underhandedness considering the lower-than-anticipated draft pick.
