As a lifetime Packer fan and resident of Green Bay, I'd be quite happy for Brett no matter what he wants to do. There's nothing he could do to tarnish his legacy here, it's already established.

I don't think anything was premeditated with Brett though, and I think if he wanted to come back it would be because he changed his mind. I don't think the "contender" probability has as much to do with whether he would or not, as he would need to see a situation that would be attractive. Whether that be a contending team, or just liking a certain team for whatever reason.

That being said, going into the 2008 season, I don't see another NFL team, that would really do Brett any good by joining. For that reason, is the ONLY reason I think Brett won't return.

as a pack fan, i would rather see favre stay retired than play for another team. as much as i loved watching the guy play, i can't see him in another uni. as an aside, there was recently something on the jsonline packers blog that mccarthy and favre spoke as recently as last week. something's brewing in titletown, i can feel it. they didn't sign quinn gray, they didn't sign trent green, no on gus frerotte. they can't be comfortable with a rookie as a back-up. no word on craig nall signing as a back-up or 3rd stringer yet either. as of now, the only qb on the roster is aaron rodgers. with his healthy/injury reputation, i would hate to see him start against the viqueens on monday night, get hurt on the first play, and then see the pack lure favre out of retirement the next week (thereby breaking the consecutive games streak). get favre back. trade rodgers for a 2nd round pick, and go get chad johnson. peace.

Hey... He loves to play! HE LOVES TO PLAY!... it might be a slow newsday but it is intriguing.
--he was mad as hell that TT didn't get moss..demanded a trade although he denied it...
--he had a GREAT year.. an MVP year if it weren't for Brady and MOSS!
--coming back to GB would have meant SB or failure..big expectations
--he can still play and loves it..
Let's just play along for a minute. By a trade the pack could get a 2nd rounder? Maybe even a first? MVP caliber, leadership, and instant wins. What did SF get for Montana? anything? At least the Pack gets a pick which TT loves. Don't tell me Miami or Tampa wouldn't like a veteran QB. Parcells loves old QB's. Favre for Jason Taylor? Or Parcell's dumps the first pick so he saves $30mil for his team? Gruden? Former Packer coach and already has 5 or 6 QB's what is one more. Warm weather, closer to home, less expectations with more fun.
I am a huge Favre fan in WI.. and I would love to see him play again,
anywhere. you will find in WI.. people who love favre might not like TT (ted thompsen) very much.

I'm as rabid a football fan as anyone else, but I can't for the life of me care what a 38 year old QB, who has only recently achieved a good season record, does with his retirement/non-retirement. Save last year, what has he done recently to merit attention? It could just be me, but outside of John Madden, who cares what Farve does? Outside of Green Bay, very few people worry about Farve's decision processes. And, if he comes back and blows another season, even the people of Green Bay will join the ranks of the "those who don't care"! Brett, stay retired after your last good run. Otherwise, obscurity awaits.

No way, not going to happen. He would completely tarnish his reputation with fans up here in Packer country. Favre has always been concerned with how people view him and something like this if true, would ruin his legacy.

There is no way this is true. It makes no sense. I could kind of see it if the Packers were in total disarray. But they're not. In fact, they have an extremely talented team.

Must be a slow news day.

It sounds to me as thought Favre feels slighted, somehow, by the Packers. I can't see him playing for another team, but I can envision a scenario in which he returns to Green Bay. Simply put, the man was born to play football.

I agree, he a demigod in Green Bay with a talented team.It would be a shame for Green Bay fans to watch #4 play for another team.I cannot imagine the day that Tom Brady is not a Patriot. It this happens, my sympathies to the Packer faithful.

I don't think he'll come back. If he did, it would be to win a Super Bowl. He came within one game of getting back there this year and that Packers team will largely come back intact in '08. To me, he was in the best position to accomplish that goal by remaining with the Packers. To give up that possibility, regardless of how he felt treated by the Packers, makes me think it won't happen and that this is a bogus story that was pitched during an otherwise slow news cycle in the NFL.

You honestly would believe that Brett Favre would go through all the hassle of the news conference, talk about how he and his wife made the decision that it was time to go, and actually say the words "i'm done" only to turn around and pull something like this?

1) It would ruin the image he left with the fans and proving he still had the talent to play the game

2) Brett is not the attention craving person the media would try to depict him as and the only reason he'd come back is to crave the attention

3) I highly doubt Brett cares about what one lowly writer at ESPN has to say; especially one that wasn't highly involved in the whole coverage of Favre until he wrote that article

4) He has nothing left to prove. He's got the records. He's got a SuperBowl win. He's got 3 (?) MVPS. What more does he need to prove?

5) and my final thought, he's never gone so far as to actually say he's done. Every other time has been "I just don't know." You don't go through all the hoopla and the hassle of what he's done to turn around and say, "oh, i changed my mind." THAT would be against what we've already seen so I don't believe he's coming back.

this reminds me of when barry sanders retired. remember the rumors? "barry is coming back, just not for the lions." "barry wants to play for a winner." we heard those rumors for years and we are still waiting for barry to come back. favre is as done as barry was. this, like barry's case, is a case of people simply not wanting to see one of the greatest of all time hang 'em up.

It baffles the mind WHY Favre would want to play for another team given that he is a demi-god in Green Bay, his team is stacked with talent and YOUNG, and were one bad pass away from a Superbowl appearance. Does Favre quietly have some sort of ill-will towards the Packers organization?

I think if there is any truth to this at all that Brett will go from the most revered in many minds to the most reviled, at least in Packer country.

Falcons should pick him up so he can retire where he began. Seeing as though Atlanta was last place in that division for last season, and so the pattern goes, they're due to be NFC South Champions for this season.

How is this news? The story is unconfirmed. Hey LA TIMES, I haven't filed my retirement papers yet. Maybe I am looking to play somewhere else.

If this actually happens, Ted Thompson will think what happened to Dan Devine's dog was a walk in the park. I fear for TT if this actually happens.

Gotta go with the unnamed sources on this one. My theory is that once Brett took a good look at Sal Paolantonio's article on his career he realized he had some unfinished business to take care of.

Nobody pwns #4!!
