Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times has a report today that, if true, would be a bombshell: Brett Favre could be weighing a comeback with an NFL team other than the Packers.
Farmer quotes unnamed NFL sources as saying that Favre’s agent “has quietly inquired with teams about their interest.” And he notes that Favre, who tearfully announced his departure from the game of football last month, has not yet filed his retirement paperwork.
But Farmer also quotes Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, as saying he knows nothing about it. And Cook tells ESPN, “That is absolutely false. Absolutely false, and you can quote me on that.”
That leaves us with the choice of believing Farmer’s unnamed sources or Cook’s emphatic denials. And it reminds us that no matter how many times Favre says he is done playing football, we’re not done hearing speculation that he’ll return.

as a pack fan, i would rather see favre stay retired than play for another team. as much as i loved watching the guy play, i can’t see him in another uni. as an aside, there was recently something on the jsonline packers blog that mccarthy and favre spoke as recently as last week. something’s brewing in titletown, i can feel it. they didn’t sign quinn gray, they didn’t sign trent green, no on gus frerotte. they can’t be comfortable with a rookie as a back-up. no word on craig nall signing as a back-up or 3rd stringer yet either. as of now, the only qb on the roster is aaron rodgers. with his healthy/injury reputation, i would hate to see him start against the viqueens on monday night, get hurt on the first play, and then see the pack lure favre out of retirement the next week (thereby breaking the consecutive games streak). get favre back. trade rodgers for a 2nd round pick, and go get chad johnson. peace.

As a lifetime Packer fan and resident of Green Bay, I’d be quite happy for Brett no matter what he wants to do. There’s nothing he could do to tarnish his legacy here, it’s already established.
I don’t think anything was premeditated with Brett though, and I think if he wanted to come back it would be because he changed his mind. I don’t think the “contender” probability has as much to do with whether he would or not, as he would need to see a situation that would be attractive. Whether that be a contending team, or just liking a certain team for whatever reason.
That being said, going into the 2008 season, I don’t see another NFL team, that would really do Brett any good by joining. For that reason, is the ONLY reason I think Brett won’t return.
