The Vikings have made clear that finding a veteran backup to quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is an off-season priority, and now they can check it off their list.
John Clayton of ESPN.com reports that 36-year-old veteran Gus Frerotte has agreed to a deal that will put him back in Minnesota, where he was the veteran backup to Daunte Culpepper in 2003 and 2004.
“The thing is if you watch tape of Gus in St. Louis, you can still see that he can still fling the football and make all the spot throws,” Vikings coach Brad Childress told Clayton. “I talked to Scott Linehan about why he was cut by the Rams, and he told me that [offensive coordinator] Al Saunders wanted Trent Green as a backup because he knew his system, but Scott thought Gus can still play. You can see that he can by watching the film.”
(Whether it makes much sense for Childress and Linehan — two coaches who could find themselves competing with each other for a playoff spot — to share personnel evaluations is another issue for another time.)
Clayton reports that the deal won’t be finalized for a few days, as both sides go over the language of the contract. But it does appear to put to an end any talk that the Vikings might trade for Texans backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels.
Frerotte started three games for the Rams last year, completing 56.3 percent of his passes, with seven touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a passer rating of 58.3.

They have not signed him yet. I think the ‘Sage trade’ may still happen.

Gus…big whoop. That will make me go out and buy a season ticket.

Childress also said “it’s a weird situation where our backup is clearly better than our starter.”

I probably wouldn’t go that far…
Anyway, there is nothing wrong with sharing an evaluation on ‘why’ the player was cut. I suspect there are plenty of times when one head coach speaks to another regarding a players status or future status, so why shouldn’t they ask about a previous personel decision? It’s just the same as doing due diligence on a kid in the draft. In this case, it doesn’t sound like this was any kind of deciding factor in the process. By looking at the tape he has clearly made the choice himself.
Incidentally, I wonder what this says about the NFC North as a whole. As a Bears fan, I can’t really think of one player of the QB’s in the division who I’d be overjoyed about starting. Rodgers probably gets the benefit of the doubt and tops the list for the simple reason that he hasn’t been sacked enough yet to be a ‘true’ NFC North Quarterback.

If they sign Gus they better hope Zigi gets thicker cushioning for the walls that Gus is going to try and put his head through

The Packers were looking at Ferotte as well just to have a veteran back up to Aaron Rodgers. Wasn’t this the guy who rammed his head into the wall in DC?
Hey, I can’t fault them for wanting some experience behind Jackson.

Gus Frerotte? Really? I find it hard to believe that there isn’t anyone else out there — somewhere! — worth signing over a 36 year old Gus Frerotte. Well, as a Packers fan, I applaud the move.
But…guh.

Why??? Rosenfels would have made more sense and provided actual competition for Jackson.

If Childress and Linehan are competing for anything, it’s probably to be some other team’s QB coach next season.
And I don’t think honesty among coaches to help each other out is as all that strange. After all, all coaches will be fired and need some friends in the coaching business to help them get their next job.

Now that the Vikings have a solid No. 2 and No. 3 QB, all they need now is a starter.

Not only do they still need a starter, but they also need a coach.

Rosenfels would make them a contender. Frerotte is at an age where he might suddenly cease to be even competent (see Johnson, Brad). The Vikings are hamstrung by their stubborn commitment to Jackson.

Let’s be brutally honest. Tavaris is a work in progress. Berrian will be touted as a savior in Minny, but he only got the big deal and the headlines because there was a very shallow talent pool at WR in free agency. His spindly little legs would concern me if he were on my team. Signing Gus is a decent move, I suppose. Sage would have been nice, but with Gus, you don’t hafta sacrifice anything. At the end of the day, how hard is it really, to hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor?

Gus is a decent one or two year option as a back-up. He should not receive a start. Sage would be a better option for short term starting, but still isn’t a good NFL starter.
My opinion- the Vikes should target JD Booty in the 3rd round. He’ll likely be there (or they might need to trade up about 10 spots), he’s accurate, he’s seen good competition, he could start if needed, and would be a very good back-up/spot starter for at least 5 or 6 years. He could probably learn a little something from Gus and if all else failed would be a QB who could manage the team into the playoffs. Booty should be added.

“Ditkas Cigar, a Cheerleader, says:

Am I the only one that thinks the Vikes do not want any competition for Jackson?
As a Falcon fan, I have seen this kind of coddling before.
Get redy for the receivers, coach, offensive line, waterboy, etc, etc to be blamed.
This is a lot like the Vick situation. Without the dogfighting.
