Philadelphia Eagles tight end L.J. Smith was the first player this year to be slapped with the franchise tag.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Smith has signed the one-year tender. He’s now guaranteed to receive a base salary of $4.522 million in 2008.
Once a player signs the franchise tender, he is under contract with the team and is required to participate in training camp and all other mandatory team activities. Also, the player is no longer eligible to receive offers from other teams.

I’m sure L.J. fumbled the pen a few times before the official signature.

Let’s all celebrate Eagles fans. We’re guaranteed one more year of dropped passes and all-around under-achievement. Oh well, I guess we shouldn’t expect too much from him. He was only drafted 8 picks ahead of Jason Witten.

LJ Smith has recently been awarded “least clutch player in league history” after an astounding 66 game streak since his last play that actually meant something.

Excellent. Now that he’s healthy, I’m certain he’ll lead the league in FAC (fumbles after the catch). It took a year of injury problems for him to relinquish that crown. Well, on a possitive note, it should add to Kevin Curtis’ TD totals.

He’s possibly the least-likeable Eagle in recent history. Dhani Jones and Mark Simoneau are probably right up there too.

He was plagued all of last year by a pulled groin.
But that’s the risk you run when you hitchhike in Jacksonville.
