The long-rumored trade that would send suspended Titans cornerback Pacman Jones to the Dallas Cowboys does not appear to be as close as previously thought, and may be in jeopardy of falling through.

“The deal can still be made but there is a lot of work to do,” an unnamed Titans source told Ed Werder of ESPN.com.

Per Werder, the Cowboys have rejected the Titans’ request of a fourth-round pick this year and another pick in 2009. There also appears to be a difference of opinion between the Cowboys and Titans on some aspects of Jones’ contract.

“It’s pretty muddled,” Werder quotes a Dallas source saying. “Any time you have disputes over both the picks and the money, you have a real problem.”

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips didn’t want to talk about Jones at today’s league meeting.

“We’ll cross that when we come to it,” Phillips said. “It’s been discussed … but right now there’s nothing to talk about.”

Asked about his situation, Jones said, “There are a few teams interested in me like the Detroit Lions, New England and Miami Dolphins. But everyone knows I want to wear the star on my helmet, and play for Jerry Jones.”

Even if the Titans do find a trading partner, Jones can’t play unless NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstates him, which might not happen for a long time — or ever.
