So we’re listening to Man-Girl & Meatball in the Morning and they’re trying to suggest that the NFL left the New England Patriots off the Week One slate of prime time games because of the lingering questions involving Spygate, I and/or II.
Both of them seem to be convinced that the move was the sole result of the issue that so many in the media seem to be hoping will become a huge story.
While they might be right (after all, there’s a first time for everything), we think that the omission has more to do with the fact that no team can appear in prime time more than six times in a single season. Why burn one of the appearances in Week One, when we’ll all flock to watch a Packers team without Brett Favre play a Vikings teams with Brooks Bollinger, and then we’ll chase it with three hours of Broncos-Raiders?
So there’s simply no reason to waste an appearance in prime time from teams like the Patriots or the Cowboys (the two biggest regular-season draws in 2007) during the first week of the season, when (as we all proved last year) we’d even watch the 49ers and the Cardinals, a game that generated only one real highlight.

Of course ESPNRadio’s goal isn’t actual analysis or researched opinions. Their policy is the crazier the banter the better… no thinking necessary.

I agree completely, it is opening weekend of the NFL. People will watch any game. After the pre season snoozers, people will tune in to watch Rams/Dolphins because it will be a game that counts in the standings. For those wondering why I picked Rams/Dolphins, they were the worst two teams in football last year.

When the Colts won the Super Bowl, there were talks about making the Colts/Pats game the opening night Thursday game. The league decided against it for the very same reason Mike suggests. It is going to be a huge ratings getter as regular game in the season and it was.
Seriously. Is a rematch of the Colts/bears Super Bowl really that appealing as a Sunday night match up? Maybe if it was announced before last season. I think the only reason the Colts are even in a primetime game opening weekend is because they are unveiling their new Lucas Oil stadium.
Look at the other games. The Giants/Redskins game is a good, but not great match up in terms of national interest. The Giants won the right for the Thursday night match up. The Monday match ups are strickly for fans of their respective teams and people who will watch football no matter who is on. A Favre-less Favre Green Bay vs. the Vikes and the Raiders/Broncos are not exactly what I call marquee match ups. At least not until they prove themselves this season.

Thank God someone recognized this as a possibility. This after both of the clowns went on at length over the “shocking” revelation about Walsh not having signed confidentiality clause (I was happy Mort called in to correct them). The Patriots will get their six prime-time football games, rest assured.

The NFL is avoiding over exposure. The Pats were on prime time almost every week last season.
I heard Mort call into the M&M show as well (I tune in cuz D&C on WEEI are doing the lame “headlines” segment). He clearly hates the Pats.

Florio is 100% on target. The NFL is going to load up on Cowboys and Patriots during ratings sweeps periods. It makes no sense on wasting those teams now.

Ha! Ditka just can’t control that rocket in his pocket. Guess it’s not a good idea to pop all that Levitra before the broadcast. Off camera he was no doubt humping Golic’s leg.

And why exactly do some of you think M&M should attack the games? Keep in mind that they are likely going to be calling one of those games. Of course they will comment on the absence of the NFL’s only ever 18-win team, but you can’t expect them to use reasoning like “the only reason to watch is because it’s opening night.” They would, in effect, be sabotaging their own ratings.
Broncos-Raiders is on the schedule because they needed a somewhat-attractive matchup of west-coast teams in the 10:00 slot. Short of something involving San Diego, the NFL really couldn’t have done better. Packers-Vikings is intriguing because it’s the first time in 16 years that Favre won’t be in the starting lineup, and Adrian Peterson is always incredibly fun to watch. These games aren’t that bad.

Broncos vs Raiders is a horrid matchup. Two abysmal teams that will be fighting for the AFC West cellar.
The two football “minds” running those organizations have had the NFL pass them by. Both have resorted to reaching in both FA and the draft to find some salve to their pathetic player evaluation skills.
I’ll pass on that game.

Meatball Head and Manly Girl don’t have a clue to how the NFL schedules their season games. The schedules are done in years advance leaving the divisional games open. The schedule was made awhile ago and that’s just how the straws were drawn. Plus the NFL believes in giving all teams a fair chance on being scene in prime time, whether the teams are good or bad. They all deserve the same treatments as scheduling game.
