Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, generally adopting an uncharacteristic tone of defiance in remarks from the league meetings in Palm Beach, has a message for receiver Chad Johnson a/k/a Ocho Stinko.
Play for us, or play for no one.
“We’ve been dealing with this inside for over a year and we’ll be prepared to move on,” Lewis said. “He has a contract through 2011. If he plays NFL football it will be in Cincinnati, or he has to do what he says and that’s retire. That would be a shame.”
Wow. But, wait. There’s more.
“A lot of people who really had an affection for him fan wise and people around the league see him in a different light and that’s unfortunate. Some of the things he’s gone on record and said one way or the other he’s going to have to deal with them one way or the other. . . . He’s said he’s probably going to sit out. I think you’ve got to own up and do it. . . . The Cincinnati Bengals hold the cards through the 2011 season.”
Actually, the Bengals hold the cards even longer, if Johnson holds out beyond the tenth week of the 2008 season. At that point, his contract would automatically be extended to 2012.
If/when Johnson comes back, he might not recognize the team. Because Lewis plans to make the team more physical, and to throw the ball less.
“We’ve got to go back and play physical football and be a different team,” Lewis said. “The coaches are well aware I’m not happy with it. . . . Everybody thinks it’s cute to throw the ball around the lot, but you don’t win games throwing the ball around the lot.”
Hey, we like what Lewis has to say. But we’re not sure that the passing game should be completely overlooked. Running the ball and stopping the run better than anyone else didn’t even yield a playoff berth for the Vikings.
Still, it’s time for an attitude change in Cincinnati. Lewis is the one who helped create the current atmosphere by putting up with Johnson’s crap. Standing up to Johnson might create a T.O.-style soap opera, but it also will help Lewis regain the trust and respect of the locker room.

Yeah but if someone offers ridiculous draft picks for him, then Lewis may change his tune. If JJ gave them those two first rounders for him I bet this story would change quick.
Good job though Marvin

“but you don’t win games throwing the ball around the lot.”
Yeah, teams that threw the ball around a lot last season (like the Patriots) generally struggled to add up wins.

Choosing to pass less vs. not being able to pass at all are two very different things. Methinks Palmer and Housh will make better use of their pigskin tossing opportunities than Tavaris Jackson and Bobby Wade did last year.

as a father figure its great for marvin to stand up to Chad… as a football coach its just stupid (and too little, too late).
“We’ve got to go back and play physical football and be a different team”
if you want to be a physical team the best thing to do is trade your prima donna receiver and try to get some physical linemen and/or defensive players in return. Chad is now inevitably going to respond here further distancing the relationship, making it harder and harder to get any value from him on the trade market.

I read that on the Bengals Site about 15 minutes before PFT got it.
I am SO glad that he is taking this route as the Head Coach.
I also went to chad’s site (LOL!) and dropped him a few words…
which he probably will never see since he is looking through Rosenhaus Colored glasses!

Hey Marvin, couple years too late, wouldn’t you say? The Bengals have been plagued with charactor-issues for years, and now he tries to stand up against it?
I’d say that Lewis understands that if the Bengals fail this year, he’ll be out of a job. Maybe he’s trying to talk up the CJ stuff now to insulate himself and give a pre-emptive reason for possible struggles in hopes of retaining his job.
Just seems so late in the game to pull this tough guy act.

No matter what the offer is its almost impossible to trade Chad because of the cap hit. Yea passing worked for the patriots but that is one of very few teams that can pass all the time. I’m glad Marvin stood up and called Chad out. He just needs his attention and he will be there for mandatory camps. People in Cincinnati don’t like him anymore because of this. I look forward to his home crowd booing him during the games.

You’re crazy if you think Marvin Lewis is on the hot seat this season. He’s probably got another 5 years left, or until Mike Brown passes away from old age.

What about the retirement issue? Couldn’t he just retire like Junior Seau did and then turn around and sign with another team? Maybe there is something in his contract that prevents that, but I remember Seau retiring from the Dolphins and then not even a day later he signed with the Patriots. Couldn’t that happen here again?
I personally have no problem with Chad Johnson…I’m just tired of having to listen to the stupidity of the people involved. Either trade him and get some better players to do what they think they want to do or release him so both parties can move on. I understand not wanting to let go of a playmaker because he’s a playmaker, but if he’s sitting on the bench and not playing for them…how many plays is he really going to make?

dt3 has a good point. If you want to become more physical and not throw as much, then I don’t see a point in having a disgruntled wide receiver when you already have TJ Houshmanzada, it’s a plague in the locker room.

I am surprised at the number of comments on here about “just trade him”. I can think of 8 million reasons why the Bengals won’t trade Chad Johnson. Unless Stinko picks up his own signing bonus, there really is not incentive to move the guy. At least if the fool retires the Bengals’ can go after his signing bonus and free up some cap space.

Why should he care if he’s burning bridges? Havn’t the resurgences of TO and Moss proven that no matter how turd-tastic a receiver acts, his ability to catch touchdowns will trump everything? CJ can be a crybaby and miss a season and as all will be forgiven and forgotten by the NFL media and most fans after his first 100 yard game.

It’s about time Lewis stood up to Ocho Stinko; the inmates have been running the asylum for far too long however that the damage might already have been done.
Where are all the Ocho Stinko apologists now? Isn’t he supposed to be ‘entertaining’ and ‘good for the game’? Yeah right - Chad is far worse than TO - at least TO never got into physical altercations with his coach.

Maybe Stinko and Lewis will provide some entertainment this season on the sidelines…you know people would love to see them throw down right there in front of the bench! I can see it now…Palmer throws a sucker punch like a wrestling manager and all hell breaks loose…then we get a blow by blow account of it from fatboy Tony the Goose…now that would be cool…
