Speaking in the kinds of harsh terms that athletes rarely use toward teammates, Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler lashed out at wide receiver Brandon Marshall at a press conference today.
“Yeah, he’s not my favorite person right now,” Cutler said of Marshall. “I mean, I support him, but it’s always something with him right now.”
Marshall, who entered the league with Cutler in the 2006 draft, has developed into Cutler’s No. 1 receiver. But he will miss much of the off-season after suffering a serious arm injury while wrestling with relatives. Marshall at first claimed that he slipped on a McDonald’s wrapper and later admitted he was lying about the circumstances surrounding the injury.
Cutler said he was disappointed that he won’t be able to work on his timing with Marshall during the spring.
“We’re going to be fine. I’m not that overly concerned about it, but it just would be nice coming into our third year, coming off a big year he had last year, for him to get more work done and get more time in and just a little more trust out there,” Cutler said. “But it’s going to take some time now, maybe training camp, maybe even longer.”
Cutler also brought up Marshall’s October drunk driving arrest.
“I’ve talked to him many times. I think a lot of people have. . . . He knows he’s running out of chances,” Cutler said. “This wasn’t like his DUI and other stuff he’s had. It was an accident, but still, things like that can’t happen. He knows it.
“But like I told him, I said, ‘Brandon, they’re going to quit giving you chances and you’re going to have to go somewhere else. And that’s going to be a shame.”‘
And although Marshall has said he understands he has to change his ways, Cutler doesn’t sound like he buys it.
“His DUI was a wakeup call,” Cutler retorted. ”He’s had many wakeup calls. I mean, he’s been in [coach Mike] Shanahan’s office many times. I’ve been up there with him. He said the same thing: ‘This is a wakeup call. This is the last thing that’s going to happen. Blah blah blah.’ I mean, until he goes out and proves it, we’ll see what happens.”
It’s unusual to hear one player call out another in the media the way Cutler did today, and it’s a sign that Marshall may not be a very popular guy in his own locker room.

That’s a QB being a leader. If Chad Johnson had a guy like this to call him out, maybe he’d shut his darn mouth.

Is it possible that Marshall actually tripped over one of Brian Griese’s dogs?

It sounds as though Cutler is talking with the conviction of a man wanting to play as a team. Here he sees a talented young individual that could help the team immensly, but is stuck in the “I” in team. If Marshall has any sense (does he?) he will drop the ways of Porter, Moss, Owens, Jones, and Johnson (pick one) and get on the same page as the rest of his team mates and work together with them to accomplish what they set out to do. One would hope that Marshall sees the sincerety in what Cutler has aired and not pull a J-Walk(er.)

I’m glad to hear what Jay Cutler said. It’s good to see a leader emerging when all we seem to hear about are the self-centered players.

Drew said exactly what I was thinking. Cutler is now the unquestioned leader of his team. Carson Palmer needs to grow a pair, and lead his team as well. And this is coming from a Bengals fan. Palmer tries to stay out of these conversations, and he’s regarded to be as spineless as his coach, Marvin Lewis, when it comes to Ocho flapping his yapper.

Maybe instead of assuming the negative; “It’s unusual to hear one player call out another in the media the way Cutler did today, and it’s a sign that Marshall may not be a very popular guy in his own locker room.”
We could instead assume something positive. And that is a young QB stepping into a leadership role and, unlike many leaders today, demanding accountability of ones actions from those around him. Kind of refreshing in this day and age of dodge and deflect.

Wow… You don’t hear that too often in this league. The last time I heard a QB speak his mind and send a message through the press was Bret Favre telling Javon Walker to honor his contract. We saw how that turned out! Cutler isn’t the type of guy to speak out like that; however, he’s probably aware of the talent being wasted in Marshall, and desperation is probably setting in to save this guy’s career in Denver. Kudos to Cutler for realizing that the message isn’t being registered w/Marshall in Denver. Sometimes it takes a leader to exhaust all mechanisms to try and get a great talent to see the light. Coach Kevlar has to be pleased w/his QB today! I know I am. (Dolphin Fan)

I knew when I pulled up these comments the talk would be leadership. In my opinion, it’s totally inappropriate taking this to the media.
The fans in Denver want their Elway, but this is just a guy crying to the media(about a guy who makes him look better on the field).

If Cutler was a leader he’d be saying this to Marshall and the rest of the team, not to a reporter. To me Cutler looks likey a whiney coward, not a leader.

Not that it hasnt been mentioned already here but how great is it to hear someone call out another teammate and put him in check? this is long overdue and like most ofthe folks have already mentioned in this section, Cutler just gained some big points with the true fans of the game with his actions…

I agree with Treez and tomas. This kind of dirty laundry should be aired in private, not to the media. What good comes from calling a guy out publicly like this? It just makes him resentful.
