Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan, whose buzz as a potential NFL quarterback took a serious hit once his team was dismantled by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, will see his draft stock dip for an entirely separate reason.
Brennan needs surgery to repair a torn labral in his hip, according to Tony Pauline of SI.com.
The surgery is scheduled for April 7, and he’ll miss eight-to-12 weeks as he recovers and rehabs. In other words, he’ll miss most if not all of the offseason workouts of the team that drafts him.
In turn, he is expected to drop from a middle-round selection to a late-rounder. He possibly won’t be drafted at all
The injury occurred during the first Senior Bowl practice. He decided to finish the week, and he then played in the annual college All-Star game.
But the hip has continued to bother him. He also has gained 33 pounds since his weigh-in at the Senior Bowl.
Bottom line? Brennan’s potential pro career is in a huge hole right now, one from which he might never be able to dig out.

Best thing for him to do right now is to go talk to scouts and ask them for advice. If he can get drafted, he should be able to afford better PT, enabling him to heal quicker. He has a strong arm and he is moderately smart; has NFL potential, but what concerns me more than his injury is his character. What Brennan did at Boulder is of importance to realizing who he is. And to add a PFT-type addition, he died his hair blond last year.

I guess I’m not educated enough about the transition college QBs have to make to succeed in the NFL, but I have been flummoxed all spring about how poorly Brennan is rated as a draft prospect. I saw two years of inspiring quarterbacking and leadership from Brennan (because so many Hawaii game was on ESPN or ESPN2 at, say, 11pm on Saturday nights), ending with one really bad performance in the 2008 BCS game against Georgia. He’s a senior, he’s mature, he’s been in jail and been rehabilitated. He’s a “character guy”, in my opinion, and with a strong arm.

the labrum i can understand, but dang, colt, lay off the luau.
an extra serving of kalua pork shouldnt win out over a chance to play in the NFL.
let those of us who didnt throw for a record 58 touchdown passes eat the leftovers.

He’s still worth a low round pick in my opinion. I don’t think anyone feels he’s starting quality material now anyhow. No matter where’s he’s drafted, he’ll just carry a clipboard and develop his skills over the next few years. His pro potential is probably that of a back up.

As long as it isn’t from burgers and fries, the weight gain is a good thing. 185 is downright worrisome for a QB.

It’s not like he was going to play this season anyway. As MVP pointed out, he was going to be a clipboard guy anyway, so why not take the chance. He has a big time arm and in the right system, he should do well at the next level. The problem is this time next year. There’ll be a whole bunch of new prospects ready who will be healthy and ready to go, and Brennan’s got to hit the PT hard in order to compete in ‘09. Certainly he won’t be in round two as some have suggested, but I can’t fathom him not being selected before pick 255 is called.

ya… Marc Bulger held a clipboard as a low-round project QB for a couple years. That paid off.
Brennan has a similar type arm in my opinion. Skinny but able to make throws.

I never quite understood that either. The guy throws for 5 million touchdowns but because he lost to Georgia in a bowl game none of what he did matters. That and the fact that he went to Hawaii. Undefeated regular season don’t matter cause you lost to one of the hottest teams in the nations come bowl time. Not every QB in the NFL went to USC or LSU. Smaller program QB’s can get it done in the NFL. Adding 33 pounds is a lot but were talking about a kid who was a string bean in college. Adding 33 pounds still only puts him at under 220. This isn’t like other QB’s who weigh 270 and then add 30 pounds (hey, hey, hey).

I don’t understand who likes the guy. Is he that much better than Timmy Chang? Yes, that Timmy Chang. Colt may make it, but I wouldn’t have expected him to get drafted at all.

I have had this injury, and it is quite painful. My recovery time wasn’t as long as 8-12 weeks, more like 4-6. I would think a conditioned athlete, with nothing time to rehab should be able to pull off recovery sooner than 8-12 weeks. I guess it also depends on how bad the tear is.

I don’t think he was seen as anything more than a 5th rounder anyway, but obviously this will push him down to the back of the QB pile. The problem for him is one he cannot solve by surgery - his height. Much like Troy Smith last year, I can’t see a team willing to shell out early on for a kid who can’t see over his O-line.
On the other hand, his weight gain shouldn’t affect his stock too much, at least not negatively. A few scouts pointed out after the Senior Bowl that he was possibly hurt more by turning up seriously underweight for his position. An extra 20lb would have been about right.
Hey, now he’s back up to his playing weight. His friends have got a new nickname for him - fatty.

He did need some weight but 30 pounds of fat can’t be good.

Being that I live in Hawaii I got to see Colt play a lot. Coming into this past year I thought he would be right behind Brian Brohm. My how things change in a year. Brian could be the 4th QB selected when all is said and done. And here we are talking Colt might not be even drafted.
In my eyes I thought Colt was very overrated this past year. If your team runs the ball ten times a game of course your QB will have big numbers. The thing with Colt He has the talent, I have seen it in previous years and than looking back at this past year it just seem like he was mailing it in on many games. I felt his accuracy was off and it just seem he lack fire. Than there was the Georgia. There was no sense of urgency in the game coming from him. Like he expected one of those last min. come backs against a weak WAC team. Bottom line is he has to learn to play all 4 quarters of the game before he can be a QB in the NFL.

Shaun Lowrie-
Obvious you have never heard of “the leg extension” surgery. I may have four knees now, but I can dunk!

If Colt Brennan somehow finds his way into the league, he’ll be out of it in two seasons max. He’s a system QB if ever there was one.
