Fifteen teams received a total of 32 compensatory draft picks today when the NFL revealed the final tally at the league meetings in Palm Beach, Florida.
Compensatory draft picks are extra picks in the third through seventh rounds, and they go to teams that lost more or better free agents than they acquired, based on a complex formula. The maximum number of compensatory picks any team can receive is four, which the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals got this year.
The Bears, Colts, Eagles and Redskins got three compensatory picks apiece. The Bills, Panthers and Dolphins got two each, and the Falcons, Packers, Giants, Rams, Chargers and Titans each got one.
The most valuable compensatory picks are the third-rounders, which were awarded to the Redskins, Bengals, Falcons and Ravens. In past years those would have been the last four picks of the first day of the draft; this year the third round is on the second day.
Fourth-round compensatory picks went to the Eagles, Bills, Ravens, Titans and Packers. Only one team, the Chargers, got a fifth-round compensatory pick.
Sixth-round compensatory picks were awarded, in order, to the Giants, Eagles, Colts, Colts, Eagles, Dolphins, Colts, Ravens and Bengals. The rest of the compensatory picks are seventh-rounders.

The Bengals get 3 extra pick at the end of round 7. Is the NFL trying to ensure they draft turds?
If the arrest counter won’t be reset by the draft, once round 7 ends, you’ll probably have to reset it multiple times in an hour span.

WOW - given the 4 extra picks, the Bengals scouting staff . . . . . Oh wait, the Bengals don’t have a scouting staff. Nevermind.

Given the fact that Miami only got 6th and 7th round picks, am I correct in assuming that salary cap casualties (i.e. Zach Thomas, Marty Booker, etc.) are not considered as part of the equation?

DirtySouthDolphin I don’t think cuts count. These picks are for last seasons free agency not this year. May all your seasons be 1-15. GO BILLS!

The Patriots lost most of their friggin secondary and don’t get any picks? I know they dominated last year, but they did lose some great players without getting much to make up for the losses.

jbare003, It’s based on last year’s free agency, where the Patriots snapped up practically all the big names and didn’t lose anyone. Thus not receiving compensation for it.
