Here’s a look at the perceived draft needs of the Kansas City Chiefs, with heavy input from Matt Miller and David Gardner of NewEraScouting.com.
Left Tackle: The Chiefs claimed on waivers free agent Anthony Alabi, cut by the Dolphins, and perhaps he can supplant 2007 free-agent addition Damion McIntosh at left tackle. But is either guy really the right guy to protect the quarterback’s blind side? Solid left tackles never come available on the open market, because their teams will never let them get away.
Jake Long would be the ideal pick at No. 5 overall, but it’s unlikely that he’ll still be on the board. Ryan Clady of Boise State is a very athletic pass protector and has the talent to become a franchise left tackle, but he may be a reach at No. 5. Should the team wait until round two, they could find Barry Richardson (Clemson) or Jeff Otah (Pitt) waiting to be plucked from the board.
Quarterback: There are some who believe that Brodie Croyle is the future of this team, but he hasn’t done much in the present to justify it. The Chiefs could opt to go with Matt Ryan at No. 5.
Then again, some believe that G.M. Carl Peterson likes Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm, whose stock is sliding. Brohm could be on the board when the Chiefs use their second-round selection.
Wide receiver: Dwayne Bowe looks like a future Pro Bowler. Opposite him, the team could be relying on Devard Darling, a free agent pick up from Baltimore, who never has fulfilled his promise. Jeff Webb has shown ability, but he is not consistent and struggles to separate. Samie Parker, Eddie Drummond, and Bobby Sippio are journeymen at best; Parker and Drummond are free agents and likely won’t return.
The draft this year is deep at the position, and it would allow them to add more weapons to an offense that has a lot of young pieces in place. Looking at the third round, the Chiefs could find players such as Early Doucet (LSU) and Adrian Arrington (Michigan) on their board. Both are productive receivers who have shown up in big games against top competition.
Cornerback: Ty Law is long gone, leaving an opening at left cornerback. Patrick Surtain is on his last legs as a starter and there is little talent behind him. Second-stringer from 2007 Benny Sapp recently bolted for Minnesota. Cornerback could be the team’s first pick this year; regardless, it’s a need they’ll definitely address at some point in the draft.
Players being linked to K.C. are Antoine Cason (Arizona), a talented cover-two style corner, Patrick Lee (Auburn), Aqib Talib (Kansas), and Zack Bowman (Nebraska).
Center: Casey Weigmann left for Denver, leaving the Chiefs with no clear-cut replacement on hand. With free-agent Justin Hartwig choosing Pittsburgh, the Chiefs could look for a starter in the draft. Adam Spieker from nearby Missouri is a player the team was scouting heavily during the 2007 season. The Chiefs’ zone-blocking scheme also favors mobile centers like Doug Legursky and Mike Pollak.
Then again, there’s a chance that the Chiefs will go with Rudy Niswanger as the starter.
Defensive line: Jared Allen will be back, barring a trade of the franchise player. Allen will be joined by second-year players Turk McBride and Tank Tyler at tackle, and Tamba Hali on the other end. There’s a lot of talent in this group, but not much depth. McBride has also bounced between end and tackle. Ron Edwards and Alfonso Boone offer some, but are not stars.
Tight end: Kris Wilson has bolted, leaving no experience behind 32-year-old Pro Bowler Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez has been healthy throughout his career, but the team relies heavily on him in the red zone. Lining up a potential replacement will help the team immensely down the road.

Whoa, Barry Richardson as a 2nd rounder? There’s no way that’s happening. At best, he’s Mario Henderson value wise (a talented guy who gets overdrafted in the 3rd). He’s more likely to be Jon Scott and be there in the 5th/6th. And Otah is in the first round, which I belive PFT has reported on as well. Someone like Anthony Collins could be there in 2nd, along with Baker (although fit is iffy). Other 2nd round targets could be Gosder Cherilus (doubtful he falls that far, though) or the fast rising Duane Brown.
The only other areas I think they might look are
FB: They lost Grigsby and Wilson. They did sign Hoyte, but adding another guy, say, a Jerome Felton in the 5th, might be a smart move, or perhaps an Owen Schmitt in the 5th/6th.
G: The only solid piece is Waters. McIntosh could slide inside, along with some other pieces, but adding a guy like Donald Thomas or Robert Felton in the 4th/5th might be good ideas.

Eagles fan here…does anyone think the Chiefs would trade Allen and their 2nd rounder for CB Sheppard and the Eagles 1st rounder? This would enable KC to have a No. 1 corner and the ability to draft the 2nd or 3rd best Tackle available by moving up from the mid-30s to 19. The Eagles may even throw in one of their Comp. picks (4th or 5th) to sweeten the pot.

Kegel…..
Although I’m not a Chiefs fan the deal you are proposing is not a fair market deal. Allen is but 25 years old and has already averaged out to double digit sacks in his 1st four years in the league. While Sheppard may be of interest to the Chiefs, The Eagles don’t have a need for Allen after signing Clemons and drafting Abiamiri in the 2nd last year. And comp. picks can’t be traded.

Didnt know you couldnt trade comp picks. The only reason I would think this deal could happen is because Allen might be pissed for getting franchised(wanting a long term deal with more guaranteed). I know whoever gets Sheppard would have to negotiate a new deal with him, but essentially the trade would break down: 1.) Sheppard for KC’s 2nd (same as what the Raiders gave up for D. Hall) and 2.) Allen for a first (19th pick) and conditional (2nd-5th) in 2009. Both teams would be getting rid of guys that want new deals and the comment regarding the Eagles DE situation, why wouldn’t you make the trade for a 25 year old pro bowler with 10+ sacks per year, even with Clemons (situational) and Abiamiri (not proven yet) already there. Plus the Chiefs keep their top pick to draft whomever is left at 5 that they like.

Long-time Chiefs fan here…Kegel, if you know anything about the Chiefs under King Carl it’s that things don’t come cheap to others. There is no chance in hell that the King trades away a cornerstone DE for the next 10 years for an often-injured CB that has yet to reach his potential. But if he were considering doing that it would definitely come much more expensive to the Eagles then just a swap of 1st and 2nd rounders. Due to the Giants and their defensive end success, the league now sees that the key to a good defense starts up front and that puting pressure on the QB is the key to winning games. Allen was a 4th round pick 4 years ago and has proven for 4 straight years that he’s one of the best in the league. If the Chiefs draft right and develop their young players their defense is shaping up to be great for a long time.
Although King Carl is a tight-wad, Allen will sign his franchise tender with the Chiefs and eventually get his big pay day. They cannot afford to lose the support of their fans by trading away their best player after a 4 and 12 season.

I agree with njchief. Allen will get a new deal eventually. Negotiations with Carl Peterson always take a while and get ugly at times, but if he wants to keep a guy it usually gets done in the end. Just look at LJ’s contract situation last year. Allen is one of the few draft picks that makes Peterson look good and is a fan favorite. No way he leaves town.

As much as the popular pick seems to be going for a LT no matter the reach at pick 5, I’m not so sure the Chiefs will do that. The line, while there are a lot of young guys most people have never heard of, isn’t in as dire straits as folks think.
Yes - it was terrible last year. A few injuries to the young kids forced them to play has-beens like Welbourne and Turley.
If we were to line up and play today, I think the line would look something like:
McIntoish, Waters, Niswanger, Taylor/Stallings, Svitek
Now, I fully anticipate at least 2 linemen drafted plus a hard look at some undrafteds - but I think we’re so thin at so many positions that we’ll take best available on the first day.
I’m not sure there is top 5 cornerback talent out there or WR talent. So we have to go best value for any need we have. If that need is D-Tackle for depth and Dorsey is there, we have to jump on it.
My preference would be to trade down a few slots for extra picks. I don’t know what we get for comp picks this year but we’re not “one guy away” from anything - we need to have as many chances as possible to get this draft right. If that means we trade down to 14 or whatever and get to pick up a value tackle there - fine - better - a corner or WR.
I’d almost be willing to give a 2nd Round for Lito - but I’m saying that based off name alone. I don’t know if he plays cover 2 corner - if he doesn’t - we don’t need him.

If Jake Long is long gone by the 5th pick, the Chiefs will trade out of it. You heard it here first.

KXPX….a DT like Dorsey or Ellis would not be for depth…it wouldn’t take long for either player to take their place along the DL as a starter. And DT has to be a need with how porous their run D was last year.

If the Raiders dont take McFadden the Chiefs will be in prime position to trade down. The problem as mentioned earlier is that King Carl will probably stick to the trade chart and screw up any potential trade. I think a team like Chicago that is loaded on defense would trade a decent player and their own 1st and maybe a 3rd to get D-Mac.

RyanHarris: I can’t see the Bears being a team to trade up for D-Mac…who would they offer up as their is no one on their D that would be of help to the Raiders that they would be willing to trade (the only players would be on Offense and trade a QB and none of their QB’s would be of enough value). The move would be too rich for the Bear’s blood. New England possibly could leap frog the Jets or the Broncos could be a suitor (even Detroit). But the only 2 teams I see realistically trading up are the Pats and the Cowboys (none of the other teams have the neccessary firepower to move up without pulling a Ditka and then in turn ignoring other area’s of need). IMO if the Cowboy’s come calling Carl can’t turn down the offer (2 1sts this year and either a player or an additional pick in 09).

Evil: I said if the Raiders dont take McFadden then the Bears could trade up with the Chiefs, not with the Raiders.
I have to disagree with you, I think the Bears could make a move here. Also I think that saying there is no one on there D that could help may be too broad of a statement. Herm said he was looking for 5 starters in this draft; so if he could pick up a decent player I think he would be more likely to make this deal.
Dont forget that there is also a business element here as well. Look at the effect that Adrian Peterson had on the Vikings. Not only in the football sense, but also in terms of excitement and fan interest which in turn makes the owners a whole lot of money. Lets face it, the Bears dont exactly have their fans a buzzin right now. Their QB’s stink and their 1st round RB has been a bum and no one really seems to like him.
Now I am not saying that this is a gimme, but if D-Mac is sitting there at #5 the Chiefs will definitely be looking to make a deal.
Also there is no way the Pats move up to get McFadden. If he falls to them would they take him? I say maybe but more likely they would deal the pick. Broncos and Cowboys I definitely agree with; my point was that Carl has a tendency of being rather “value conscious” when it comes to trades.

I’m just hoping Jake Long is there at five. If he’s not, I’d be more than happy with a highly rated DT or even Matt Ryan at QB. Either way you shake it, if Long isn’t available, and McFadden gets drafted early - there will still be a LOT of talent for the Chiefs to pick among.
Also, Felix Jones (also from Arkansas) is going to be available later in the first round when some of these teams mentioned above (Bears, Cowboys and Pats) will be drafting. He’s almost of as much value in my opinion (and a fantastic return man) and would cost a lot less than trading up for McFadden. You can bet that Arkansas Alum Jerry Jones knows about Felix Jones.

The biggest reason the Cheifs have lost their competitive edge is the fact that they’ve allowed their O-Line to fall apart. A mediocre QB and a good RB can both look great behind a solid O-Line. In the AFC west, the Cheifs need to get their running game back on track and protect the QB enough so that the play-action passes are effective when the Defense focuses on the run.
Draft Needs: O-line, O-line, O-line.

Evil,
I didn’t mean to imply that Ellis or Dorsey would be for depth - but I mean it would add depth - having Edwards/Tyler/McBride as a rotational situation.
I think we’ve got some ok D-Tackles but no young Warren Sapps - I’d love to see Dorsey in red and gold - but I’d still like to trade down around mid round 1 and pick up an extra 2 and 3 or 2 and 4.
