The New York Jets plan to keep quarterback Chad Pennington on the roster for 2008. The real question, however, is whether they plan to pay Pennington a base salary of $6 million to be the backup to Kellen Clemens, if Clemens wins the starting job.
Per the New York Daily News, G.M. Mike Tannenbaum has informed Pennington’s agent, Tom Condon, that Pennington will be a member of the team in 2008.
“Chad is under contract,” Tannenbaum said. “I’m happy he is here. Eric [Mangini] is happy he is here and the best player will play. Chad is going to be here this year.”
But if Pennington isn’t regarded as the best player at the quarterback position after training camp and the preseason, how can the Jets justify giving him $6 million to sit on the bench? They can’t, and they won’t.
Instead, Pennington would surely be asked at that point to take a steep reduction in his 2008 salary, possibly with much of the money converted to incentives based on whether and to what extent he ends up taking many/any snaps as the season unfolds.
There’s another fly in the proverbial ointment here. Per the Daily News, the Jets held a private workout on March 21 for Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, who also is represented by Condon.
Tannenbaum explained that the Jets were merely performing their “due diligence” on Ryan, but Tannenbaum didn’t rule out selecting Ryan with the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.
The mere fact that the Jets are kicking Ryan’s tires isn’t good news for Clemens, the second-round draft pick in year one of the Tannenbaum-Mangini regime. If the G.M. and coach are sufficiently secure in their jobs to cut the cord on Clemens, perhaps they’ll give the job to Chad in 2008 — and resume the search for his eventual successor.

Tom Condon may be about as exciting as melba toast, but he was able to (with a straight face, mind you) put a $6M price tag on Pennington’s services for one year. David Blaine and Criss Angel beware!

So true itsacurse, so true. But what Florio fails to see is the team pushing up Pennington’s stock just before Draft Day 2008. I see a draft day trade going down with Penny for a 3rd.

as a jets fan, danny bonadoochi aka mangini is imo a spy working for the pats with the intention of making the jets and their fans miserable. how can you only give a guy one year to see if he can be the guy with an offense as entertaining as a snail taking a dump. not to mention the fact trying to put a size 2 jean on an obese woman with his defense. he overpays for guys that by the time they do get the offense right and get the pieces in place, they’ll be retired, really old, or in kris jenkins case, bed ridden. it amazes me the ineptitude of some of these owners and makes me wonder how they got rich in the first place.

1) Why would they rule anything out? Isn’t that why it’s called smokescreening? Should Tannenbaum have told Gary Myers the top six picks on his board?
2) This will be the first time in a few years the Jets actually have the chance to draft the BPA rather than by need early on.
3) Brian Brohm (who with the way things stand right now won’t be available any time near when the Jets pick again) said the Jets were the most exhaustive workout he’d been through. Does that mean they are taking him at six by your logic then?
Believe it or not, they actually do their due dilgence on as many players as they can … hell they’ll have met with McDaddy at least three times prior to the draft. With one of the larger scouting staffs in the league, they can afford to. The holy trinity also worked out Matt Leinart two years ago, but if you remember they didn’t pick him either.
The Jets don’t really care about who gets pushed down the depth chart if it means they get better at a position. If they stick at six, they’ll pick the best player available this year, something this front office hasn’t had the luxury to do over the past two drafts.

If the Jets didn’t “kick the tires” on Ryan then they shouldn’t even be involved in sports… There’s a whole list of reasons why the Jets MUST look at Ryan.. NO?????
And if they think this guy is a franchise QB, you take him becasue having 2 good QBs is one of the best situations in the NFL….Besides the fact, what if they can’t trade down, view the other prospects as bad fits and need to make a move at 6…. Ona nd on…
And if this is “bad News” for Clemens then BOO HOO - All he should worry about is competing….
But, it’s in the best interst for the Jets to make people believe that the Jets are keeping Pennington AND there’s interest in Ryan..
Jets should have TRADING DOWN as an option in this draft - don’t ya think it’s in their best interest for those teams to think they need to trade to get him????

Realistically, if the Jets are going to take Matt Ryan, it’s Clemens who would likely be the outs, and Pennington would be the starter for one more year until Ryan was ready. If they don’t think Clemens is their guy for whatever reason, they wouldn’t just cut Pennington and let Clemens be a lame duck awful starter for one season.
I think the point will be moot come the draft anyway.

The Jets could be thinking of keeping Pennington and drafting Ryan or another quarterback as the heir apparent. If so, the Clemens Era will come to end just after it started.
