That made all the difference. The Giants, of all teams, had the ball for nearly the first 10 minutes of the game. That set the tone, and New York's defense took it from there. You have to give the Giants full credit for rising to the occasion. Then again, they lost the regular-season finale to the Pats by just three points, so their performance in the Super Bowl shouldn't have come as a complete surprise. In hindsight I think it's obvious that the ankle was a much bigger problem than Brady or the team led the public to believe and came at the worst possible time against the league's top pass rush. When Brady was injured in the 2001 AFC championship he was listed as probable before the Superbowl but appeared to be at 100% during the game. This time around it appears they did the opposite and I can't say I blame them. Maybe they were hoping that if the Giants believed Brady to be fully healed they wouldn't come at him with reckless abandon every single down.
