Forgotten in the four weeks and forty-eight hours since the Philadelphia Eagles signed cornerback Asante Samuel on the opening day of free agency is the fact that the Eagles are looking to trade cornerback Lito Sheppard.
The deal hasn’t gone down, and the reason for it isn’t clear. Though there likely has been haggling about the value of Sheppard, with the Eagles presumably wanting more than what any interested teams would want to sacrifice, the recent trade of cornerback DeAngelo Hall from the Falcons to the Raiders should help to frame the market.
Hall generated a second-round pick in 2008 and a fifth-round pick in 2009. Sheppard generally is comparable to Hall, with Hall maybe being a half-notch above him.
One way or another, the deal is likely to get done. As noted in the Charlotte Observer, by way of the Philadelphia Inquirer, talks could heat up during the league meetings in Palm Beach.
But there’s no rush, in our view. The Eagles can wait until draft day. If the corner that a team covets is gone before it picks at the bottom of round one, then maybe that team would send that pick to the Eagles for Sheppard. Or maybe after the dust settles on the first day of the draft a team will ship a first-rounder in 2009 to Philly for Sheppard.
Either way, a deal is likely to happen. If the Eagles were committed to Sheppard as the franchise’s shut-down corner, they wouldn’t have given so much money to Samuel, who actually is a few months older than Sheppard.

I still think the Eagles could trade Lito to Baltimore and flip 1st round picks with them. The Ravens are still looking for another corner, John Harbaugh knows and likes Lito from his coaching days in Philly as both ST and DB coach, and a move down to 19 wouldn’t dramatically alter the Ravens draft plans.
The Eagles could also flip picks with New England, who obviously is also looking for a corner, and it is generally assumed that NE is looking to move out of the 7 spot. A slight move down would give the Pats a more affordable Pro Bowl corner than Samuel was, and they wouldn’t have to pay the 19 spot as much guaranteed money.
At the 7 or 8 spot the Eagles could go after Ryan Clady of Boise St., giving them the left tackle of the future they fear they don’t have right now in Winston Justice.

I agree with the potential Baltimore move… They have a need and we could fill it. I like Lito, I think he is a great corner. The Eagles think he is a great corner too, but the recent string of injuries he has had has lowered his value… And it proves that a decent guy who stays healthy (Sheldon Brown), will win a roster spot everytime.

I find it hard to believe the Patriots or Ravens would have Lito rated so highly that they would drop 11 or 12 spots in the first round for his services. Yes, when he is on the field he is a very good cover corner, but he misses significant playing time almost every season. I just don’t see how he is worth a team moving out of top 10, especially with some arguably better prospects available at that point in the draft.
If the Patriots trade the 7th choice, they are more likely to be looking for additional draft picks than collecting another team’s junk. I could see the Ravens being interested, just not for the 8th overall pick in the draft.

Nobody is going to give up anymore than a third rounder for Shepherd. Shepherd is NOT a good CB and if he was why in the world would the Eagles go out and spend huge dollars on Samuel? They value Sheldon Brown who is a better CB than Shepherd, and Shepherd can’t stay healthy. Plus this draft is loaded with good CB’s in an otherwise very weak draft. Any team wanting a good CB just has to rely on their scouting department which teams spent millions on to draft a good young and cheap CB.
Any team even suggesting swapping first round picks for Shepherd needs to have their GM fired on the spot for being a complete IDIOT!

If I’m the Eagles, I wouldn’t deal Sheppard unless it were to fill an absolute position of need for 2008. You can never have enough depth at the CB position, and keeping Lito allows Sheldon Brown to move into the slot in nickel packages, a position he is better suited for. By all appearances, the Eagles are playing to win it all this season before parting ways with McNabb, Dawkins, Runyan, and Thomas. What do the Eagles still need to make their Super Bowl run this year? Wide Receiver. If they can’t use Lito to land a top-flight wideout, than I wouldn’t trade him.
Of course, I haven’t heard one way or the other whether or not Lito is a threat to hold-out….

OK.. well I have to disagree… “Sheppard” is a good corner. How can you say that he isn’t one when he is a 2X pro bowl selection and when he is healthy he can shutdown some of the best WRs in the game. He is at least worth a high 2nd/low 1st rd pick as far as trade value.
Take for example Philly’s win over Dallas in the latter part of last year. He limited TO to absolutely nothing, and has also done so with other WRs.
His problem is he has bad luck on the injury side. When healthy Lito is better than Sheldon Brown.
Sheldon is just stalwart every year. And every year Sheldon is near pro-bowl caliber.

this would be perfect situation for a swap for the bills and the eagles by swapping first rounds the eagles get thee premier receiver in the draft what they have been coveting all of free agency and the bills get a number 1 corner back which they are in desperate need of and still get there receiver

Is there a two-time Pro Bowl corner in this draft?
No. If you think there is, you are dreaming. Until you can tell me different, don’t tell me about the depth at corner in the draft.
Any GM will take a two-time Pro Bowl corner over a draft pick any day of the week. You’re talking a proven commodity versus an unknown quantity.
Use your head.

Keep Lito and win it all this year.
Look at this backfield
samuel, dawkins, brown, sheppard
Now try to throw on that!
Eagles dumped michael lewis because he could not cover. Now considine can not tackle. Sheldon brown solves both those issues as your new safety.

Ah….. The flowers are budding…. The days are getting longer… and everyone things there is a difference between the #1 pick in the draft and the #30 pick! This cracks me up every year. The draft is a crap shoot! If the first CB taken in this years draft makes 2 PBs in his first 5 years in the league, the GM that took him would get points towards his “genius” reputation. If the Eagles trade Lito for a pick they are fools. Why would you give up a young, at worst solid CB (I would rate him a strong B+ CB when healthy), for a potentially worthless draft pick? If the Eagles work something out for Roy Williams, or Anquan Boldin that is worth it. If they move up in the first round it is a TERRIBLE deal for the Eagles. As a Birds fan, I would LOVE to see them keep Lito and move Sheldon Brown for FS and Dawk to SS. This would (i) give them incredible depth in the secondary; (ii) allow them to remain in their base D vs 3 WR sets; (iii) lengthen Dawks career, as he does not have the wheels to cover the ground the Eagles need him to as FS in Johnsons scheme. The only potential downside is if Sheldon can’t make the transition to FS. In that case, you move Dakw back to FS (or draft a starter this year- FINGERS CROSSED), and you have 3 rock solid CBs. If they “move up” in the first round for Lito, Fat Andy should choke on a Chicken Cutlet, and move his fatness back to Provo! F DALLAS!

Lito is a proven commodity. The Jaguars signed Drayton Florence who will be lining up at CB and will be moving CB Brian Williams to Safety to replace the hole left by Sammy Knight (who became the full time guy when Gerald Sensabaugh was put on IR). I don’t see why the Iggles couldn’t do the same thing with their secondary. Even if it’s just for one year. They’d maintain solid depth at the CB spot and would be more versatile in the secondary overall. Unless a blockbuster offer comes their way, I think it makes sense to keep him.

Well it makes perfect sense to me everything StraightTRUTH talked about. Either way I would be good with. I foresee this defense being close to “A”, the only unknown is the LB situation.
There is some promise there, especially with the up and coming of their younger guys. They did OK last year, I was shocked to see Trot go… but it proved to be a beneficial move. Omar Gaither played pretty good, he was solid… not spectacular… but we will see this year.
I am hoping they could move Sheldon around and keep Lito. That leaves some great depth at CB. Joselio Hanson played pretty well last year. Although I miss Roderick Hood.
