As quarterback Daunte Culpepper waits for the phone to do something other than sit there and stare at him, his chances of returning to the Raiders apparently are shrinking.
The Raiders recently have signed quarterbacks Erik Meyer and Jeff Otis, giving them four arms on the roster as offseason camps approach.
Four is the magic number for most teams when it comes to training camps and the preseason. Then again, neither Meyer nor Otis have played in a regular-season game. So it’s possible that they’ll be competing against each other in the short term, and that one of them will get the boot before too long.
Though Culpepper still shows up on the team’s official online roster, the transactions page on the Raiders’ web site makes it clear that Culpepper, who played under a one-year deal in 2007, has not be re-signed.
No one has shown any interest in Culpepper. In fact, the only time his name has been mentioned came on the first weekend of free agency, when the Randy Moss camp, in an obvious effort to put pressure on the Patriots, leaked that Moss had reached out to Culpepper about possibly reuniting on the same team.

Delete his contact information from your address book, Oakland. One year with him was bad enough.

This is no real surprise as his past production was more the result of Moss than anything else. He’s a QB with a strong arm who actually moved around in the pocket quite well despite his size. He still weighs probably 260-265, and that’s just too much for that injured knee.

So Dante,
How’s it working for you representing yourself as your own agent?

I feel sorry for Daunte. It seems unfair to be embraced by the game you love, Only to be chewed up and spat out. But this is not just a game it is also a buisness. Culpepper over valued himself in Minnesota after wrecking his knees, Butting heads with the new coach, Then holding out for a bigger longterm contract. And the worst part about the whole part was firing his agent then representing himself. Sounds like something Britney Spears would do.
Part of what made Culpepper such a dominant force was two things.. His big arm and the fact he could run like a Back. If you left him an opening he could take it 15-20 yards down field. I dont think that he has gotten that back completely. So all he has left is a big arm. And you can get that cheaply in the draft and mold the player.
Deep down I really liked Culpepper. I almost wish he would make up with coach Childress and come back to Minnesota and finish up his career here, even if it is in a third string spot. But I assume afraid that could never happen based on possible hard feelings and the fact that that should be a roster spot for someone younger who is developing.

The last I heard Culpepper was his own agent. He could be a productive backup somewhere, with a good offensive line. It would seem that being your own agent does not always work.

Well, he would make a good backup to Brady. I’m not sold on Cassel. I’d like to see Chris Simms or Culppeper as the #2 QB.

Daunte is at the end of his career, and no team will go out and spend a lot of money signing him. The best bet he has of ever playing again is with oakland. He should sign a low deal if he wants to play, and retire if he justs wants some more money. He can’t perform well enough anymore. Jamarcus Russel the new franchise QB will be the starter, and this poses a problem for daunte. He simply will end up either retiring or being someones backup. The only way he sees play is if the starter for whatever team he decides to sign with gets hurt.

This is what kind of what happens when the player and the agent are one in the same.
