This my friends is called a viscous cycle. The reason we need to guarantee Coles 11 mil, is purely 100% Chad Pennington's fault. The reason Coles needs a new contract or a guarantee etc... is because he is one concussion away from hanging up up. The reason he is in the situation is because of Chad Pennington's extremely WEAK throws to him. By the time the ball gets there L.C. is a blatant, defenseless target ready to be plowed by a safety. Add this to all the short routes he has to run because of Chad's weak arm guaranteeing at least a decent hit every time he catches the ball.

Pennington is a WR's WORST NIGHTMARE. We need to cut or trade him ASAP before more people get hurt.

alr719 how can you possibly think that Coles is the one who caved? How many players of his stature have EVER had the final 2 years of their contract guaranteed? Signing bonuses are the only part of an NFL contract that is ever guaranteed. Blatantly obvious once again that Mangini and Tannenbaum are in way over their heads on this move.

It's not clear to me that the Jets wish to have Pennington as their starting quarterback this coming season. In fact, all indications suggest that Kellen Clemens will get the call as the starting quarterback. As such, Pennington doesn't deserve a starter's salary -- with the Jets, anyway.

Pennington probably could serve as the starting quarterback elsewhere, and the Jets should think about trading him to Kansas City or Minnesota for commensurate value. Then again, for reasons I can't quite comprehend, the Jets seems to be structuring their team for an all-or-nothing run this season, even though they don't appear to be positioned strongly enough to enjoy success.

In all likelihood, Tannenbaum and Mangini think they're in a win-or-else bind with Woody Johnson (a name like that could only exist in reality; in fiction, it would be considered too contrived).

It's been known for awhile that Coles' last 2 years were to be guaranteed. The Jets FO offered this to him before he started crying, it's sounds like Coles caved in, as he should. He's not getting any younger and he's one concussion away from ending his career.

Florio et al. need to do some research. Coles wanted an extention. The Jets said they would guarantee the last two years. Coles, initially balked at that. COLES is the one that caved more. They didn't give him anymore money, HE settled for the team's offer. Look the Jets are always a favorite whipping boy for the media, and they have made plenty of mistakes but the team won this one.

Mike Florio. I just don't agree with this.

There is a difference between Laveranues Coles, a starter, and Chad Pennington, a presumed backup for next year. Coles is excellent; he has been a great receiver for a long time. Without him, the New York Jets would be in a heck of a lot more doo-doo than they already are/were. They made a decision to keep him. This does not have to be the case for all other players. Go on a case-by-case basis, and the Jets did the right thing with the receiver I have liked to draft in fantasy football for years.

Now, this is something else that has been bugging me. First, to make this all work, Pennington HAS to stay healthy. I've seen Kellen Clemens play a lot, and the same with Pennington. Clemens is overrated. I don't like him. If I had both on my team, there would be absolutely, positively no question who my starter would be. I wouldn't think twice about it. He is smart and extremely accurate with passing. His touch is astounding, and he has been a winner, and with a team around him, can lead the Jets far.

That starter is Chad Pennington.

It's unclear to me how much of this is about the Jets caving and how much is about the Jets finally living up to what they may have already told players. According to various reports, Pete Kendall became disgruntled and disruptive only after the Jets had indicated they would pay him the million and then did not do so in the off season. Similarly, they may have given Coles some type of verbal promise to "take care of him" in the offseason.

Pennington has persistently been a team player and yet has continued to get his chain jerked. Still he will probably get a better deal as a back up with the Jets than anywhere else. Though the Vikings and the QB starved Atlanta might be good places for his agent to poke around.
