New England Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson has undergone ankle surgery within the past few weeks, according to the Boston Herald.

The procedure revealed scar tissue and damage to cartilage.

The injury occurred during the team’s October 2007 victory over the Cowboys.  There reportedly is concern as to whether he will be available for the start of training camp.

Though Watson initially refused to talk to the Herald about the situation, he eventually opened up.  A bit.

“It was definitely an issue, but everyone has issues, stuff they fight through,” he said.  “It was a nagging thing.  Right now, it feels good.

“I’ve had some time to rest since the season ended.  It was bothering me during the season from that initial injury.  But that’s what the offseason is about.  Rest and rehab.”

Last month, the Patriots dumped veteran Kyle Brady.  The other tight ends on the roster are David Thomas and Stephen Spach.
