If they do sign McFarland, the Steelers will corner the market on human byproduct nicknames (with Booger and Dookie).

Come on Florio! I saw the headline and immediately searched for the YouTube embed of Booger from Revenge of the Nerds, most likely a scene where he wins a burping contest.

You let me down, man.

The Steelers better start signing some offensive lineman. "Big Baby" is gonna make you forget about "Booger"

Mahan didnt work out at center, but still may at G. Washed up Rossum? He was never a corner, just a return man, and special teams guy. didnt have a great year as a PR but was a good KR and ST tackler. What more were you expecting?

McFarland is so overrated. Sapp, Rice, and the other lineman made him seem much better than he was since he was the only one people didnt have to double team. He never lived up to his hype and gets injured every fourth game. The bucs regretted letting sapp go instead of booger.

he didnt help Indy win a Superbowl, he helped them get lose a second round draft pick. You really have to give the bucs credit for somehow getting a second round draft pick out of him.

I totally agree Rossum was a good addition. Unlike the Colclough/Reid/Santonio combination, he could actually cleanly field a kick. I thought he was a huge upgrade over that mess, even if he was never really a threat to break one.

I will be a bit sad to see the 3-4 go, but that really seems to be the way its gonna be. I trust Tomlin on this one, he's done pretty well so far.

Well, you go with what (and in this case, who) you know. Tomlin put together one of the best defenses (especially rushing defense) ever not just in Minnesota but statistically in league history. Plus helped reinforce a Tampa defense that has been great for years.

This isn't the first time that a coach goes with someone that he has coached or worked with in the past. Tony did it with Booger. Currently Detroit head honcho Rod Marinelli is hiring former players and coaches. Other examples are Sean Payton, Marvin Lewis, Bill Parcells, Romeo Crennel, Herm Edwards, and Mike Holmgren just to name some off the top of my head.

Florio's right, this is just a precursor to a change to the vaunted Tampa Two defense. Can you blame him? Think of it this way, since 2000 either a 3-4 or Tampa Two defense has one 7 of the last 8 superbowls. You got the best of both worlds especially with a coach that specializes in the Cover 2 defense that can actively stop the run.

McFarland is a good leader and great personality to have on the team...accept him, he helped bring us a SB in Indy...

To the above poster:

Allen Rossum was definitely a good addition. So far I'd say the Steelers are 2 for 3 on former Tomlin-ers. We'll see on Moore and Booger.

Of course, the Jets didn't have a defensive genius at DC when Mangini was hired, and they certainly didn't have anyone along the lines of a Hampton/Farrior/Polamalu-type playmaker (don't bother saying John Abraham--I don't care how talented you are, if you're injured 25% of the time, you're not a playmaker). So I guess crappy teams aren't allowed to rebuild?

Am I the only steeler fan worried about Tomlin brining in all his old buddies? We all know how that worked out with giving Sean Mahan, a backup G/C in Tampa, to a 5 yr, $17 million dollar contract be a starting center for us. He traded a draft pick for a completely washed up Allen Rossum who he fondly remembered from his days with the NFC. However, Mewelde Moore might be a good signing because along with a good returner, were getting a good 3rd down back, a role which Dookie Davenport did not perform well.

But Mcfarland? our D ends are normally in the 6'5" range and about the 285-300 pound range, and our d tackles are about 6' or 6'1" and real stout (i.e. Casey Hampton=6'1" 325 lbs) I don't know if our plans our to plug him into a d tackle rotation when we go to a 4 man pass rushing front if he'll be in the D end rotation. Unless he gains some mass and strength, he won't be a D tackle in the 3-4. It's unlikely a guy who's 30 is going to be asked to changed his body type. I'm not sure if I'm sold on this pick or not, I guess we'll just wait and see how he's used this season...
